Lesson 6: Rebekah\u2014She Ventured Into the Unknown<\/h2>\n\n

In what ways did Rebekah show courage?<\/h3>\n\n

Comment 1:<\/strong>Rebekah showed courage from the moment she met Eliezer. Although he and the other men were complete strangers, she did not react coldly. She was hospitable, gave him water, and willingly offered to care for the ten camels too. Her courage was accompanied by generosity and good judgment.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 2:<\/strong>Her greatest display of courage came when she learned that Jehovah was inviting her to make a complete change in her life. She would have to leave her home, her family, and everything familiar, travel hundreds of kilometers, and marry a man she had never seen. Even so, she answered: \u201cI am willing to go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Comment 3:<\/strong>Rebekah did not need to know every detail before making a decision. She did not know exactly what Isaac would be like, what her new life would be like, or even whether she would ever see her family again. What she did understand was that Jehovah was directing matters, and that was enough for her.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 4:<\/strong>She also needed courage during the long journey to Canaan. They spent several weeks crossing unfamiliar territory and finally the dry region of the Negeb. Each day took her farther from her former home, but Rebekah kept going without turning back.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 5:<\/strong>When she finally met Isaac, Rebekah humbly accepted her new assignment as his wife. She had shown courage not only in starting the journey but also in taking on a completely new life. The result was beautiful: Isaac came to love her deeply and found comfort after Sarah\u2019s death.<\/p>\n\n

1. How did Eliezer\u2019s situation change when Abraham had children, and how do we know that this servant did not become bitter?<\/h3>\n\n

Comment 1:<\/strong>Before Abraham had children, Eliezer was the one who would probably have inherited his possessions. But when Isaac was born, he was no longer the possible heir. Even so, he continued serving Abraham faithfully and accepted a mission that would directly benefit Isaac and his future family.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 2:<\/strong>Eliezer could have felt pushed aside. For years he had been the main candidate to inherit Abraham\u2019s household, but everything changed when Isaac was born. Yet there is no sign of resentment; on the contrary, he worked wholeheartedly to support Jehovah\u2019s purpose.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 3:<\/strong>His prayer at the well shows his fine attitude. He did not ask for the mission to fail or think about his own interests. He begged Jehovah to show loyal love to Abraham and help him find the right woman for Isaac. He genuinely wanted the mission to succeed.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 4:<\/strong>We also see his humility because, when he found Rebekah, he did not take the credit. He immediately acknowledged Jehovah\u2019s direction and thanked him. That shows that he was not trying to regain prominence but wanted to carry out faithfully the responsibility entrusted to him.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 5:<\/strong>Eliezer teaches us that a change in circumstances does not have to make us bitter. We may lose a privilege, a responsibility may change, or someone else may receive something we had hoped for. We can still wholeheartedly support Jehovah\u2019s interests, just as this faithful servant did.<\/p>\n\n

2. Abraham wanted Isaac\u2019s bride to move to Canaan rather than Isaac moving to the city where Rebekah lived. Why?<\/h3>\n\n

Comment 1:<\/strong>Jehovah had promised to give the land of Canaan to Abraham\u2019s offspring. So it would not have made sense for Isaac, the heir of the promise, to leave that land and settle permanently in Mesopotamia. His life needed to remain connected with the place Jehovah had chosen.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 2:<\/strong>Abraham understood that Isaac\u2019s marriage was not merely a family matter. It was connected with Jehovah\u2019s purpose. So he looked for a wife who worshipped the true God, but he insisted that she be the one willing to move to Canaan.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 3:<\/strong>Sending Isaac to live among Abraham\u2019s relatives could also have exposed him constantly to an environment where idolatry was widespread. Abraham wanted to protect his son\u2019s spirituality and keep him in the land Jehovah had promised to his descendants.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 4:<\/strong>This shows Abraham\u2019s faith. He did not think, \u201cPerhaps it would be more comfortable for Isaac to live near our relatives.\u201d Comfort came second. What mattered most was cooperating with Jehovah\u2019s direction and trusting him to care for the outcome.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 5:<\/strong>This also helps us understand why Rebekah\u2019s decision required so much courage. It was not simply a matter of getting married; she had to leave her land and willingly enter a family that was playing a special part in Jehovah\u2019s purpose.<\/p>\n\n

3. What was the purpose of the gifts given to Rebekah and her family?<\/h3>\n\n

Comment 1:<\/strong>The gifts were part of an honorable marriage arrangement according to the customs of that time. Eliezer gave Rebekah articles of gold and silver and clothing, and he also gave valuable things to her family. They were not simply gifts meant to impress them.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 2:<\/strong>When Rebekah gave water to Eliezer and the camels, she first received a gold nose ring and two gold bracelets. Later, after the family accepted the marriage proposal, other valuable items were given. This confirmed the seriousness and formal nature of the agreement.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 3:<\/strong>Those gifts also showed that Abraham was in a position to care well for Isaac\u2019s future wife. Rebekah\u2019s family could see that they were not sending her away with a stranger who had no means, but to a household that Jehovah had richly blessed.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 4:<\/strong>The gift did not mean that Rebekah was being bought. She retained the right to make her own decision. When the time came to leave, her family asked her directly: \u201cAre you willing to go with this man?\u201d and she freely answered yes.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 5:<\/strong>This detail helps us appreciate the respect shown throughout the process. The families were taken into account, the commitment was formalized and, above all, Rebekah\u2019s decision was respected. Everything was handled in a dignified and honorable way.<\/p>\n\n

4. What was Rebekah\u2019s journey from Haran to Isaac\u2019s home in the Negeb like?<\/h3>\n\n

Comment 1:<\/strong>It was a very long journey. Eliezer\u2019s route from the area of Beer-sheba to northern Mesopotamia was more than 800 kilometers, and Rebekah then had to travel a similar distance in the opposite direction. At camel speed, the trip could take several weeks.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 2:<\/strong>Rebekah had to get used to traveling for weeks on a camel. It was neither a comfortable nor a quick journey. Day after day, she saw her home getting farther away as she moved toward a land where she had never lived.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 3:<\/strong>As they neared their destination, the caravan crossed the Negeb. It was a dry, rugged region, with rocky terrain, ravines, and desert areas. Although it could provide good pasture for flocks, to Rebekah it must have looked very different from the land where she grew up.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 4:<\/strong>During those weeks, she surely had plenty of time to think. She was going to meet a husband she had never seen and become part of a new family. She could have allowed her fears to grow, but she kept moving forward because she trusted that Jehovah had directed her decision.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 5:<\/strong>When she finally saw Isaac meditating in the field, that enormous journey into the unknown was almost over. Rebekah respectfully covered herself with a veil and prepared to begin a new stage of her life. Her courage finally brought a beautiful reward.<\/p>\n\n

What do we learn from the example of Abraham, Rebekah, and Isaac about choosing whom to marry?<\/h3>\n\n

Comment 1:<\/strong>The first thing we learn is that spirituality must come first. Abraham did not want Isaac to marry a Canaanite woman who worshipped false gods. To him, finding a woman who loved Jehovah was more important than any financial, social, or physical advantage.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 2:<\/strong>Rebekah also shows that we should think about how marriage will affect our relationship with Jehovah. She agreed to join a spiritually strong family with an assignment connected to God\u2019s purpose. She did not base her decision only on romantic feelings.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 3:<\/strong>Isaac waited. He was 40 years old when he married and did not rush into choosing someone simply because he wanted a family. His example reminds us that it is far better to wait for a spiritually suitable person than to lower our standards out of fear of being alone.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 4:<\/strong>We also learn the importance of asking for Jehovah\u2019s direction. Eliezer prayed before making an important decision and carefully observed Rebekah\u2019s qualities. Today we do not expect miraculous signs, but we can pray and apply Bible principles as we get to know someone.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 5:<\/strong>Appearance can attract us, but it cannot be the main foundation. Rebekah was very attractive, but the account especially highlights that she was hardworking, hospitable, generous, modest, and God-fearing. Those are qualities that can sustain a marriage for a lifetime.<\/p>\n\n

Rebekah was hardworking, generous, and respectful. How can Christian women today imitate her?<\/h3>\n\n

Comment 1:<\/strong>They can imitate her willingness to work. Although Rebekah\u2019s family had means and servants, she did not expect others to do everything for her. She personally went to draw water and did not hesitate to do the exhausting work of caring for the camels.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 2:<\/strong>Her generosity went beyond the minimum. Eliezer asked only for a little water, but Rebekah noticed an additional need and decided to care for the ten camels too. A Christian woman can show the same initiative by noticing the needs of older brothers and sisters, the sick, or families that need help.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 3:<\/strong>Rebekah was also hospitable. She did not know those travelers, but she sincerely cared about their well-being and offered them lodging and food for the animals. Today we can imitate that spirit by helping others feel welcome and cared for.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 4:<\/strong>She was respectful without ceasing to be a decisive woman. When she saw Isaac, she covered herself with a veil as a sign of respect for her future husband. But earlier she had shown that she could make important personal decisions and express them clearly.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 5:<\/strong>The combination of these qualities is especially beautiful. Rebekah had initiative and strength, but also humility and respect. A Christian woman does not need to choose between being capable and being respectful; she can cultivate both qualities and use her abilities to benefit her family and the congregation.<\/p>\n\n

In what ways can you imitate Rebekah\u2019s example of courage?<\/h3>\n\n

Comment 1:<\/strong>I can imitate her when an unexpected change comes up. Perhaps a new assignment, a move, or a family change makes me feel insecure. Instead of thinking only about every possible problem, I can ask myself how I can cooperate with Jehovah\u2019s direction.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 2:<\/strong>I can also say yes when I see an opportunity to do more in Jehovah\u2019s service. Rebekah could have stayed where she was comfortable, but she was willing to leave what was familiar. Courage often begins by accepting something that initially intimidates us.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 3:<\/strong>I can imitate her hospitality. Today we need to be cautious with strangers, but that does not mean becoming cold or suspicious. We can still look for safe opportunities to show kindness, interest, and generosity to others.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 4:<\/strong>Rebekah did not let uncertainty paralyze her. I do not need to know every detail about the future before making a decision that is clearly based on Bible principles. If I know what Jehovah wants, I can move forward trusting that he will help me with the details later.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 5:<\/strong>I can also cultivate courage by doing ordinary tasks well. Rebekah was not carrying out a spectacular assignment when she met Eliezer; she was simply doing a daily task responsibly. Her fine character in small things prepared her for a huge decision.<\/p>\n\n

What does this account teach me about Jehovah?<\/h3>\n\n

Comment 1:<\/strong>It teaches me that Jehovah can direct matters in ways we do not anticipate. Rebekah thought she was simply going to the well as on any other day, but that ordinary task became the start of an enormous change connected with God\u2019s purpose.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 2:<\/strong>Jehovah also listens to sincere prayers. Eliezer asked for help to identify the right woman, and before he had even finished his prayer, Rebekah appeared and showed exactly the qualities he had mentioned. This greatly strengthened his trust in divine direction.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 3:<\/strong>Jehovah values inner qualities more than appearance. Rebekah was very attractive, but what identified her as a good wife for Isaac was her hospitality, generosity, willingness to work, and above all, her love for God.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 4:<\/strong>The account shows that Jehovah respects our freedom of choice. Although everything indicated that he was directing matters, Rebekah was not forced to leave. She was personally asked and had to decide: \u201cI am willing to go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Comment 5:<\/strong>We also learn that Jehovah can richly reward a courageous decision. Rebekah left her home without knowing exactly what she would find, but she gained a husband who loved her deeply and had the privilege of playing an important role in the fulfillment of divine promises.<\/p>\n\n

How does this account relate to Jehovah\u2019s purpose and the main theme of the Bible?<\/h3>\n\n

Comment 1:<\/strong>Jehovah had promised that all nations would receive blessings through Abraham\u2019s offspring. Isaac was a key link in that line of descent, so finding him a wife who worshipped Jehovah was directly connected with the fulfillment of that promise.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 2:<\/strong>Rebekah became an ancestress of the Messiah. Her decision to leave Haran and marry Isaac had consequences far greater than she probably could have imagined at the time. Through her son Jacob, the family line that would eventually lead to Jesus Christ continued.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 3:<\/strong>The account again shows that Jehovah safeguards the development of his purpose. Abraham did not want Isaac to leave Canaan or marry an idolatrous woman. Jehovah made it possible for a suitable woman to appear who was willingly prepared to move.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 4:<\/strong>Later, Jehovah revealed to Rebekah that two nations would come from her two sons and that \u201cthe older will serve the younger.\u201d So she continued to have a direct part in events connected with the line of the promised offspring.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 5:<\/strong>It is beautiful to think that an apparently personal decision\u2014accepting a marriage proposal and setting out on a journey\u2014became connected with the central theme of the whole Bible: the sanctification of Jehovah\u2019s name and the fulfillment of his purpose by means of the Kingdom and the promised offspring.<\/p>\n\n

What would I like to ask Rebekah when she is resurrected?<\/h3>\n\n

Comment 1:<\/strong>I would like to ask her exactly how she felt when her family asked her: \u201cAre you willing to go with this man?\u201d We read a very brief answer: \u201cI am willing to go,\u201d but behind those words there must have been many emotions, thoughts, and enormous trust in Jehovah.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 2:<\/strong>I would also ask her what those weeks riding a camel were like. Perhaps she could tell us about difficult moments, places she saw for the first time, or the conversations she had with Eliezer about Isaac, Abraham, Sarah, and the promises Jehovah had made to that family.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 3:<\/strong>I would like to know how much work it really took to water the ten camels. When Rebekah offered, she did not know how much each one would drink. It would be interesting to hear how she remembers an apparently simple act that ended up revealing so much about her personality.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 4:<\/strong>I would also ask what she thought the first time she saw Isaac alone in the field meditating. After weeks of wondering what her future husband would be like, that moment must have been especially moving. Later she would see that Isaac came to love her deeply.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 5:<\/strong>Finally, I would like to ask how she will feel when she learns everything that happened as a result of that courageous decision.
