What wonderful opportunity did Jehovah give the nation of Israel? So I spread my garment over you and covered your nakedness and made an oath and entered into a covenant with you,’ declares the Sovereign Lord Jehovah, ‘and you became mine.

Answer 1: Jehovah gave them the opportunity to become his special property out of all the peoples. After freeing them from Egypt, he offered them not only freedom but also a privileged relationship with him by means of a covenant. Although the whole earth belongs to him, he was willing to distinguish Israel in a special way. To enjoy that privilege, the Israelites had to obey his voice and keep his covenant.

Answer 2: A wonderful part of that opportunity was that Israel could become a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. The promise was not limited to receiving protection or well-being as a people. If they were obedient, many members of that nation could hope that Jehovah would use them as priests. Thus, the covenant opened up the possibility of participating in a service of tremendous value.

Answer 3: The opportunity Jehovah offered them could also benefit the rest of mankind. If the Israelites were obedient, many members of the nation could be used as a kingdom of priests to bless other people. So it was not simply a matter of occupying a distinguished position among the nations. Jehovah was offering them the privilege of participating in something that would bring blessings beyond their own people.

Answer 4: Jehovah placed an extraordinary opportunity before Israel, but he made clear the condition for taking advantage of it: They had to strictly obey his voice and keep his covenant. Being freed from Egypt did not mean that they would automatically receive all the promised privileges. They could become his special property and a holy nation if they responded with obedience. Thus, the promise linked a privileged relationship with Jehovah to the responsibility of remaining faithful to him.

Answer 5: Ezekiel 16:8 highlights the seriousness with which Jehovah offered that opportunity: He made an oath and entered into a covenant with Israel. It was not a vague possibility but a promise that he himself backed. After rescuing them from slavery in Egypt, he committed himself to having a special relationship with them. Within that covenant, he offered them the opportunity to become a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.

What spiritual gems have you found in this week’s Bible reading?

Spiritual Gems for EZEKIEL 15

Ezekiel 15:1 — The word of Jehovah again came to me, saying:

Comment 1: Ezekiel 15:1 makes it clear that the message came from Jehovah, not from the prophet’s opinion. This reminds me that when speaking about spiritual matters, the authority must be God’s Word. In the ministry, I want to help people see what the Bible teaches rather than simply tell them what I think.

Ezekiel 15:2 — “Son of man, how does the wood of the vine compare with that of any other tree or branch from the trees of the forest?

Comment 2: At Ezekiel 15:2, Jehovah invites a comparison between the wood of the vine and that of other trees. The illustration, which he later applies to Jerusalem, challenges any unfounded feeling of superiority. This helps me remember that belonging to God’s people is no reason to feel better than other people. What matters is not the image I have of myself but how I respond to what Jehovah expects of me.

Ezekiel 15:2 — “Son of man, how does the wood of the vine compare with that of any other tree or branch from the trees of the forest?

Comment 3: I am also struck by how Jehovah teaches at Ezekiel 15:2. Instead of beginning with a complicated explanation, he asks a question about something familiar—the wood of a vine. That question prepares the listener to understand the lesson. I can imitate this method when teaching the Bible: Ask a simple question, listen to the answer, and help the person reason without rushing to give all the conclusions.

Ezekiel 15:3 — Can a pole from it be used to do work? Or do people make a peg from it to hang utensils on?

Comment 4: Ezekiel 15:3 focuses attention on the usefulness of the wood, not on its appearance. Jehovah asks whether it can be used for any work, even something as simple as a peg. This leads me to examine my service: Does my faith result in useful actions? In the congregation, I do not want to be so concerned about standing out that I fail to collaborate and care for specific needs, even when what I do is simple and not very visible.

Ezekiel 15:4 — Look! It is thrown into the fire for fuel, and the fire consumes both ends and scorches the middle. Is it now fit for any work?

Comment 5: At Ezekiel 15:4, fire does not improve the wood of the vine; it consumes and scorches it. This is a serious picture of the judgment announced against Jerusalem. It reminds me that Jehovah’s warnings should not be viewed as exaggerations. When the Bible points out the danger of a course of conduct, it is wise to stop and think about its real consequences rather than focus only on what that conduct seems to offer immediately.

Ezekiel 15:5 — Even when it was whole, it could not be used for anything. How much less useful it will be when the fire has consumed and scorched it!”

Comment 6: Ezekiel 15:5 causes us to reason on the condition of the wood before and after the fire. If it was not useful for that work before, the damage would not make it more useful. This encourages me not to postpone changes I need to make. The mere passage of time does not correct a bad habit. If I detect a spiritual weakness, it is better to address it now, while I can take action, than to wait until the consequences force me to react.

Ezekiel 15:6 — “Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord Jehovah says: ‘Just like the wood of the vine among the trees of the forest, which I have given as fuel for the fire, so I will deal with the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Comment 7: Ezekiel 15:6 shows that Jehovah would apply his judgment to Jerusalem’s own inhabitants. His special relationship with that city did not cause him to overlook unfaithfulness. This teaches me not to confuse spiritual privileges with a guarantee of approval. Serving Jehovah for many years or having responsibilities does not replace obedience. What I need to care for is my daily conduct and my personal relationship with him.

Ezekiel 15:6 — “Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord Jehovah says: ‘Just like the wood of the vine among the trees of the forest, which I have given as fuel for the fire, so I will deal with the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Comment 8: At Ezekiel 15:6, Jehovah expressly explains whom the wood of the vine represents: the inhabitants of Jerusalem. He does not make Ezekiel guess at the application. This teaches me to read Bible illustrations within their context. Before assigning meaning to every detail, I should pay attention to the explanation given by the passage itself. In this way, I can draw a useful lesson without adding ideas that the text does not teach.

Ezekiel 15:7 — I have set my face against them. And you will have to know that I am Jehovah when I set my face against them.’”

Comment 9: Ezekiel 15:7 warns that escaping from a fire did not mean being safe from Jehovah’s judgment. This makes me think of a dangerous line of reasoning: believing that conduct is not so bad because it has not yet had visible consequences. The absence of immediate consequences does not equal divine approval. I want to evaluate my decisions by what Jehovah says, not by whether I have managed to avoid problems up to this point.

Ezekiel 15:7 — I have set my face against them. And you will have to know that I am Jehovah when I set my face against them.’”

Comment 10: Another detail of Ezekiel 15:7 is that those inhabitants would have to recognize who Jehovah is when he acted against them. It was not enough to know his name; they had to take his authority seriously. This invites me to ask myself what knowing Jehovah means to me. I want it to be more than having Bible information; I want what I learn about him to influence my decisions and my willingness to accept his standards.

Ezekiel 15:8 — “‘And I will make the land desolate because they have acted unfaithfully,’ declares the Sovereign Lord Jehovah.”

Comment 11: Ezekiel 15:8 explains the reason for the judgment: The inhabitants had acted unfaithfully. Jehovah was not punishing them arbitrarily or without explaining why. This precision helps me view him as a just God who distinguishes between faithfulness and unfaithfulness. When I read a Bible account of judgment, I want to pay attention to the reasons he gives rather than form an impression based only on the severity of the consequences.

Ezekiel 15:8 — “‘And I will make the land desolate because they have acted unfaithfully,’ declares the Sovereign Lord Jehovah.”

Comment 12: At Ezekiel 15:8, the consequences of unfaithfulness reach the land, which would become desolate. The picture shows that wrongdoing does not always produce effects limited to the person who practices it. This encourages me to consider how my decisions affect my family and the congregation. Before justifying something as a strictly personal matter, I want to think about whether it could cause pain to others or damage their trust in me.

Spiritual Gems for EZEKIEL 16

Ezekiel 16:6 — “‘“When I was passing by, I saw you kicking about in your own blood, and as you lay there in your blood, I said: ‘Keep living!’ Yes, I said to you lying there in your blood: ‘Keep living!’

Comment 1: Ezekiel 16:6 presents Jehovah showing concern for Jerusalem, represented as an abandoned and helpless girl. In contrast with the indifference of others, he acts so that she may live. This picture highlights his compassion. It encourages me to notice those who feel alone or vulnerable and not assume that someone else will care for them.

Ezekiel 16:14 — “‘Your fame began to spread among the nations because of your beauty, for it was perfect because my own splendor I placed upon you,’ declares the Sovereign Lord Jehovah.”

Comment 2: Ezekiel 16:14 explains that Jerusalem’s beauty and fame were due to the splendor Jehovah had placed upon her. Her privileged situation was not an achievement independent of him. This helps me maintain a humble view of any ability or responsibility I may have. If I receive recognition for something I do in the congregation, I want to remember the teaching and help I have received and give Jehovah the credit he deserves.

Ezekiel 16:15 — “‘But you began to trust in your beauty, and you became a prostitute because of your fame. You lavished your acts of prostitution on everyone passing by, and your beauty became his.

Comment 3: At Ezekiel 16:15, a dangerous change is identified: Jerusalem began to trust in her own beauty. What she had received from Jehovah became a reason for self-confidence. This reminds me that even good qualities can feed pride if I fail to watch my attitude. Having experience or an aptitude for a task does not mean that I no longer need guidance. I want to remain teachable, especially when things go well for me.

Ezekiel 16:17 — You also took your beautiful jewelry made from the gold and silver that I had given to you and you made for yourself male images and prostituted yourself with them.

Comment 4: Ezekiel 16:17 shows very serious ingratitude: Jerusalem used the gold and silver Jehovah had given her to make images. The problem was not possessing valuable things but using them for something that offended him. This leads me to review how I use my resources. My money, abilities, and strength can be used in many ways. I want to make sure that their use is compatible with my worship of Jehovah, not contrary to it.

Ezekiel 16:20 — “‘You took your sons and your daughters whom you had borne to me, and you sacrificed these to idols to be devoured—have your acts of prostitution not gone far enough?

Comment 5: At Ezekiel 16:20, Jehovah denounces the sacrificing of sons and daughters to idols. His words show how serious that harm to children was to him. Without equating that practice with modern situations, I find a clear principle: Worship never justifies mistreating little ones. Caring for them involves protecting their well-being and treating them tenderly, also when teaching or correcting them.

Ezekiel 16:22 — While engaging in all your detestable practices and acts of prostitution, you did not remember the days of your youth when you were naked and exposed, kicking about in your own blood.

Comment 6: Ezekiel 16:22 links Jerusalem’s detestable conduct with her having forgotten her initial situation. She no longer remembered how much she had needed Jehovah’s help. This teaches me the value of remembering with gratitude. I can stop to think about how learning the truth has affected my life and about the spiritual help I have received. Keeping those memories alive helps me not treat my relationship with Jehovah as something I can always take for granted.

Ezekiel 16:30 — How sick your heart was,’ declares the Sovereign Lord Jehovah, ‘when you did all these things, behaving like a brazen prostitute!

Comment 7: Ezekiel 16:30 does not merely list wrong actions; Jehovah points out that Jerusalem’s heart was sick. This reminds me that caring for my spirituality requires more than correcting what others can see. I also need to examine my desires and motives. If I notice that I am looking for excuses to do something wrong, I should deal with that inclination. I want to speak honestly with Jehovah and allow his Word to help me correct the problem from within.

Ezekiel 16:43 — “‘Because you did not remember the days of your youth and you have angered me by doing all these things, I will now bring the consequences of your ways on your own head,’ declares the Sovereign Lord Jehovah, ‘and you will no longer carry on your obscene conduct and all your detestable practices.

Comment 8: At Ezekiel 16:43, Jehovah makes clear that Jerusalem would have to face the consequences of her own conduct. She could not separate her decisions from the results they would produce. This teaches me to accept responsibility when I make a mistake. Rather than focusing on circumstances or on what others did, I can acknowledge my part and correct it. Humbly accepting the consequences is very different from looking for explanations to avoid admitting that I need to change.

Ezekiel 16:49 — Look! This was the error of Sodom your sister: She and her daughters were proud and had an abundance of food and carefree tranquility; yet they did not support the afflicted and the poor.

Comment 9: Ezekiel 16:49 highlights that Sodom had abundance and lived carefree, but did not help the suffering one or the poor. Jehovah saw both their pride and their lack of compassion. This makes me think that it is not enough to avoid causing harm; I must also be interested in those who need help. If I enjoy a certain measure of tranquility, I want to use it to pay more attention to others, not allow comfort to make me indifferent to their difficulties.

Ezekiel 16:59 — “For this is what the Sovereign Lord Jehovah says: ‘I will now do with you just as you have done, for you despised the oath by breaking my covenant.

Comment 10: Ezekiel 16:59 shows that breaking the covenant amounted to despising the oath. To Jehovah, a commitment is not a formality that loses its value when it becomes difficult to fulfill. This encourages me to take the promises I make seriously, especially those related to my worship. Before making a commitment, I should think carefully; afterward, I should strive to be faithful to my word. Loyalty is shown not only by expressing good intentions but by supporting them with actions.

Ezekiel 16:60 — But I myself will remember the covenant that I made with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish with you a permanent covenant.

Comment 11: After denouncing Jerusalem’s unfaithfulness, at Ezekiel 16:60 Jehovah says that he will remember his covenant. The contrast is very beautiful: The mistakes of his people do not make him forgetful or unreliable. This strengthens my trust in his faithfulness. When reading the warnings in this chapter, I do not want to lose sight of this quality. Jehovah takes seriously both his standards and the commitments he himself has established.

Ezekiel 16:63 — Then you will remember and be too ashamed to open your mouth because of your humiliation, when I make an atonement for you despite all that you have done,’ declares the Sovereign Lord Jehovah.”

Comment 12: Ezekiel 16:63 links the atonement Jehovah would make with deep humiliation over past conduct. His mercy would not make the errors insignificant. This teaches me how to value forgiveness: not as permission to minimize sin, but as a reason to be humble and grateful. When I recognize how much I need Jehovah’s mercy, I have less reason to justify myself and a greater desire to sincerely change what displeases him.

Answers and comments for Spiritual Gems for the week of January 18-24, 2027, based on EZEKIEL 15,
