Why did Jehovah tell Ezekiel not to mourn the death of his wife? (it “Ezekiel,” par. 8)

Answer 1: Jehovah asked him to do this because Ezekiel’s conduct would serve as a sign for the Israelites who were captive in Babylon. The death of his wife and the absence of the usual expressions of mourning announced a loss that would also deeply affect the Israelites. Jehovah would allow his sanctuary to be profaned and Jerusalem to be destroyed. Therefore, that command was part of a prophetic message; it was not a general instruction about how to face the death of a loved one.

Answer 2: The command had to do with the visible expressions of mourning that would have been part of that sign. Ezekiel could sigh silently, but he was to keep his head covering on and give no outward indication that he was mourning. This did not mean that he had stopped loving his wife or that he felt no pain. His way of reacting was to communicate to the people what Jehovah had determined would happen.

Answer 3: One important reason was to show that the sanctuary would not be safe simply because the Israelites were proud of it. Apparently, Ezekiel enjoyed a happy marriage and loved his wife deeply. Her loss helped convey the seriousness of what awaited them: They would lose the sanctuary to which they were so attached. The sign disproved their hopes that Jerusalem would escape destruction.

Answer 4: Jehovah wanted the captives to understand that this conduct had to do with them. It was not merely a personal experience of the prophet. When the foretold destruction came, they would have to act as he did, without the usual expressions of mourning, and they would grieve over their errors. Thus, the prohibition against mourning was an essential part of the sign: It foreshadowed both the loss they would suffer and their reaction to the consequences of their unfaithfulness.

Answer 5: The explanation does not depend on knowing the exact reason for his wife’s death. The reference material does not establish that reason as a fact. What it clearly explains is the purpose of the command: Ezekiel was to become a sign that Jehovah would profane his sanctuary and that Jerusalem would be destroyed. Therefore, when answering, it is appropriate to focus on that prophetic function and not attribute to his wife any guilt that has not been confirmed.

What spiritual gems from this week’s Bible reading have you found?

Spiritual Gems for EZEKIEL 23

Ezekiel 23:4 — Their names were Oholah, the older one, and her sister Oholibah. They became mine and gave birth to sons and daughters. As for their names, Oholah is Samaria, and Oholibah is Jerusalem.

Comment 1: Ezekiel 23:4 identifies the two women as Samaria and Jerusalem. This detail helps us understand that the account condemns those peoples’ unfaithfulness to Jehovah. It reminds me of the importance of reading Bible illustrations in their context. Before drawing an application, I need to understand whom the characters represent and what Jehovah wants to teach.

Ezekiel 23:7 — She continued to prostitute herself with all the choicest sons of Assyria, and she defiled herself with the disgusting idols of those she lusted after.

Comment 2: Ezekiel 23:7 shows that Samaria’s approach to the Assyrians was accompanied by defilement with their idols. It was not a relationship without consequences for her worship. This makes me think about the influences I accept out of admiration or a desire to fit in. Before adopting a custom, it is wise to ask myself whether it is compatible with my worship of Jehovah. Something that others find attractive does not necessarily help me remain spiritually clean.

Ezekiel 23:9 — So I gave her into the hand of her passionate lovers, the sons of Assyria, after whom she had lusted.

Comment 3: At Ezekiel 23:9, Samaria ended up in the hands of the very Assyrians she had wanted to approach. What had seemed so attractive became a threat. The lesson for me is that I must not confuse a promise of security with true security. If I have to turn away from Jehovah to gain support, acceptance, or some advantage, the price is too high. I want to evaluate my decisions by their spiritual consequences, not just by their immediate benefits.

Ezekiel 23:11 — “When her sister Oholibah saw it, her lust became even more depraved, and her prostitution was worse than that of her sister.

Comment 4: Ezekiel 23:11 says that Jerusalem saw what had happened to Samaria, yet she acted even worse. Witnessing the consequences of bad conduct is not enough if a person does not accept the warning. This encourages me to read Bible accounts humbly, without thinking that I would never make similar mistakes. I can ask myself what attitude I need to correct now. Learning from what happened to others can spare me much pain and protect my friendship with Jehovah.

Ezekiel 23:12 — She lusted after her neighbors the sons of Assyria, the governors and deputy rulers who were clothed in splendor and mounted on horses—all desirable young men.

Comment 5: Ezekiel 23:12 highlights the splendor, position, and attractive appearance of the Assyrians. Jerusalem allowed herself to be impressed by those features. It makes me think about how easy it would be to place too much value on appearance, prestige, or power. When choosing my role models, I want to look for something deeper: whether they respect Jehovah and live according to his principles. A dazzling image does not prove that someone is a good influence.

Ezekiel 23:16 — She began to lust after them as soon as she saw them, and she sent messengers to them in Chaldea.

Comment 6: Ezekiel 23:16 shows a dangerous sequence: Jerusalem saw those images, developed an intense desire, and then acted by sending messengers. This reminds me that what I look at can feed desires that later influence my decisions. I do not want to wait until I am about to make a mistake before reacting. When choosing my entertainment or what I view on a screen, I can ask myself what desires it is awakening in me and whether those desires please Jehovah.

Ezekiel 23:19 — And she kept increasing her acts of prostitution, calling to mind the days of her youth when she prostituted herself in the land of Egypt.

Comment 7: At Ezekiel 23:19, memories of what Jerusalem had done in Egypt contributed to her continuing to worsen. This teaches me not to idealize a period when I acted contrary to Jehovah’s principles. Remembering only the pleasure and forgetting the consequences can weaken my resolve. If I have abandoned a bad practice, I want to appreciate what I have gained by changing rather than feed nostalgia for something that damaged my spirituality.

Ezekiel 23:35 — “Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord Jehovah says: ‘Because you have forgotten me and have completely disregarded me, you will bear the consequences of your obscene conduct and your acts of prostitution.’”

Comment 8: Ezekiel 23:35 points to an underlying problem: Jerusalem had forgotten Jehovah and treated him with contempt. Her bad actions reflected that she no longer took him into account. This helps me examine not only what I do but also the place Jehovah occupies in my decisions. I may know his standards and still set them aside when they make me uncomfortable. I want to keep his opinion in mind each day, especially when no one else sees what I decide.

Ezekiel 23:36 — Jehovah then said to me: “Son of man, will you pronounce judgment on Oholah and Oholibah and confront them with their disgusting practices?

Comment 9: At Ezekiel 23:36, Jehovah asks the prophet to expose clearly the detestable practices of Samaria and Jerusalem. He was not to minimize the seriousness of what was happening. This teaches me that speaking kindly does not mean presenting bad conduct as acceptable. When explaining a Bible principle, I want to do so tactfully but also clearly. The goal is not to impose my opinion but to help others understand how Jehovah views the matter.

Ezekiel 23:37 — They have committed adultery, and there is blood on their hands. Not only have they committed adultery with their disgusting idols, but they have also made their sons whom they bore to me pass through the fire as food for their idols.

Comment 10: Ezekiel 23:37 denounces that those Israelites went so far as to sacrifice their own children to idols. Jehovah did not overlook that cruelty or consider it acceptable because it had a religious motive. This verse reminds me that a practice does not become good simply because someone presents it as worship. We need to check whether it has Jehovah’s approval. It also helps me appreciate the responsibility to protect children rather than expose them to harm.

Ezekiel 23:39 — After they slaughtered their sons as sacrifices to their disgusting idols, they came into my sanctuary to profane it on that very day. That is what they did inside my own house.

Comment 11: Ezekiel 23:39 shows a very serious contradiction: After sacrificing their children, the Israelites entered Jehovah’s sanctuary. Their presence there did not erase what they had done. This reminds me that participating in spiritual activities does not replace the need to lead a clean life. I want my conduct outside the meetings to be consistent with the worship I offer at them. Jehovah deserves sincerity, not an appearance of devotion hiding a double life.

Ezekiel 23:48 — I will put an end to the obscene conduct in the land, and all the women will learn a lesson and not copy your obscene conduct.

Comment 12: Ezekiel 23:48 explains that the judgment would also serve to teach others so that they would not imitate that conduct. This helps me see why it is worthwhile to study even the Bible accounts that are hardest to read. They are not there to arouse curiosity about unpleasant details but contain useful warnings. As I read them, I can ask myself what danger I need to avoid and what change I need to make. In this way, I allow the experience of others to teach me before I suffer the consequences of a mistake.

Spiritual Gems for EZEKIEL 24

Ezekiel 24:2 — “Son of man, record this date, this very day. The king of Babylon has begun his attack against Jerusalem on this very day.

Comment 1: Ezekiel 24:2 shows that Jehovah knew the exact day on which the attack against Jerusalem began and asked that it be recorded. He was not unaware of what was happening. This detail strengthens my confidence in the accuracy of his word. Although we have limited information, Jehovah knows the facts and can give his servants a completely reliable message.

Ezekiel 24:3 — And relate a proverb concerning the rebellious house, and say concerning them: “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord Jehovah says: “Put the cooking pot on; put it on the fire and pour water into it.

Comment 2: At Ezekiel 24:3, Jehovah commands that a proverb be presented using something as familiar as a pot over a fire. An everyday object would help convey a very serious message. This gives me a useful idea for the ministry: A simple comparison can make it easier for a person to understand a Bible point. There is no need to look for complicated examples. What matters is that the illustration clarifies the teaching and that afterward we explain well how it relates to the text.

Ezekiel 24:6 — “Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord Jehovah says: ‘Woe to the city of bloodshed, the rusty cooking pot, whose rust has not been removed! Empty it piece by piece; do not cast lots for them.

Comment 3: Ezekiel 24:6 compares Jerusalem to a rusty pot that had not been cleaned. The image emphasizes that the problem was not merely her outward appearance: The contamination remained. As a personal application, it makes me think about the difference between appearing spiritual and really working on my faults. If I detect a harmful attitude, I do not want merely to conceal it. I need to acknowledge it and make concrete changes so that my worship will be clean before Jehovah.

Ezekiel 24:8 — To stir up rage for executing vengeance, I have put her blood on the shining, bare rock So that it may not be covered over.’

Comment 4: At Ezekiel 24:8, Jehovah exposes the bloodshed committed by Jerusalem in order to execute his judgment. The violence would not remain hidden or be treated as unimportant. This teaches me that Jehovah takes the harm done to others very seriously. When I learn of an injustice, I want to remember that his view does not depend on the reputation or power of the one who committed it. He sees reality, and that helps me trust in his justice.

Ezekiel 24:12 — It is frustrating and exhausting, For the heavy rust will not come off. Throw it into the fire with its rust!’

Comment 5: Ezekiel 24:12 describes a pot with so much rust that efforts to clean it were frustrating. The illustration makes me think about how dangerous it is to let a bad habit take root. Postponing a change does not make it easier to make later; it can make it more difficult. So if I notice that I am justifying wrong conduct, I want to react quickly. It is better to heed a warning in time than to wait until the problem dominates my way of life.

Ezekiel 24:13 — “‘Your uncleanness was due to your obscene conduct. I tried to cleanse you, but you would not become clean from your uncleanness. You will not become clean until my rage against you subsides.

Comment 6: Ezekiel 24:13 reveals that Jehovah had tried to purify his people, but they had not become clean. Before carrying out the judgment, he had made efforts to correct them. This detail helps me value the counsel I receive. I do not want to view it merely as criticism that I must endure but as an opportunity to change. The important question is not only whether I listened to the counsel but whether I truly allowed it to influence my conduct.

Ezekiel 24:14 — I myself, Jehovah, have spoken. They will judge you according to your ways and your dealings,’ declares the Sovereign Lord Jehovah.”

Comment 7: Ezekiel 24:14 shows that Jehovah’s judgment was based on the people’s conduct and actions. It was not a capricious reaction. The Israelites would have to face what they had done. This reminds me that good intentions or nice words do not replace obedience. When examining my relationship with Jehovah, I want to look at my actual decisions: how I treat others, what priorities I have, and whether I make the changes I know I need to make.

Ezekiel 24:17 — Groan in silence, and do not observe mourning rites for the dead. Bind on your turban, and put on your sandals. You should not cover over the mustache, and do not eat the bread brought to you by others.”

Comment 8: Ezekiel 24:17 shows that the prophet would feel pain, although because of that special assignment he was not to continue observing mourning customs. He had to grieve in silence. This reminds me that we cannot always measure someone’s suffering by what he expresses outwardly. In the congregation, a reserved person may also be going through a very painful loss. Rather than assuming that he is fine because he does not cry in front of us, we can listen to him and show sincere interest.

Ezekiel 24:18 — And I spoke to the people in the morning, and my wife died in the evening. So I did in the morning just as I had been commanded.

Comment 9: Ezekiel 24:18 shows that the prophet obeyed Jehovah in the midst of a very painful loss. The account does not present his obedience as proof that he did not suffer; instead, it highlights that he did what he had been commanded. His example encourages me not to think that feeling sadness is incompatible with being faithful. In difficult times, I can continue to value Jehovah’s guidance, even if emotionally I find it very hard to face what I am experiencing.

Ezekiel 24:19 — The people were saying to me: “Will you not tell us what these things you are doing have to do with us?”

Comment 10: Ezekiel 24:19 shows that the prophet’s conduct made the people want to know what it meant for them. He then explained Jehovah’s message to them. Although our situation is different, I find an application for the ministry: Our conduct can arouse questions that open a conversation. When someone shows interest in a decision based on our beliefs, we can use the opportunity to explain the Bible principle simply, without focusing on our own merits.

Ezekiel 24:21 — ‘Tell the house of Israel: “This is what the Sovereign Lord Jehovah says, ‘I am about to profane my sanctuary, the source of your great pride, the thing dear to you and the desire of your heart. Yet that attachment would not prevent it from being profaned. This helps me distinguish between valuing things related to worship and truly obeying Jehovah. I may feel affection for a meeting place or for certain spiritual experiences, but what is essential is my relationship with him. That affection must be accompanied by conduct that respects his standards.

Ezekiel 24:27 — In that day you will open your mouth and speak to the one who escaped, and you will no longer be mute. The prophet would become a sign, but attention would ultimately be directed to Jehovah, not to Ezekiel’s personal importance. That is good guidance for me when teaching the Bible. I do not want others to be impressed by my way of speaking.
