He had about 600 men, whereas Saul had gone looking for him with 3,000. Even so, David entered the camp at night accompanied by Abishai. The chapter connects this period with his confidence that Jehovah was helping him. Therefore, his courage was not based simply on his experience as a warrior but on having Jehovah’s support.

Comment 2: He also needed courage to stop Abishai. His nephew was willing to kill Saul, and ending that persecution would have benefited all of David’s men. But David did not let that pressure make the decision for him. He firmly explained that they could not attack the king anointed by Jehovah. This shows that being courageous does not only mean facing an enemy; it also means saying no to someone on our side when he proposes something wrong.

Comment 3: I am struck by the courage he showed in listening to his conscience even though doing so meant continuing to wait. After cutting off a piece of Saul’s garment, he felt bad about showing disrespect to him. He did not ignore that warning. When Saul was again within his reach, he acted in harmony with what he had learned. He preferred to continue facing a difficult situation rather than ease it by doing something he knew Jehovah did not approve of.

1. Abishai tended to be impulsive and ruthless. Even so, what did he do to courageously defend God’s people and help David? (it “Abishai” pars. 3-5).

Comment 1: Abishai showed courage by offering to accompany David to Saul’s camp. He did not merely express his support from a safe place but was willing to enter with David into the place where his pursuers were. Of course, once there, he needed David to restrain his impulse to kill the king. His example helps us distinguish two things: He was willing to risk himself to help David, but his courage needed to be accompanied by respect for Jehovah’s decisions.

Comment 2: The Insight information highlights that Abishai was an outstanding warrior. On one occasion he struck down 300 enemies by himself, and his reputation came to rival that of David’s three most distinguished warriors, although he did not attain their rank. So his faults do not erase the services he rendered to God’s people. When evaluating his record, it is appropriate to recognize both his courage and loyalty and the times when he needed correction.

1 Chronicles 18:12 — Abishai the son of Zeruiah struck down 18,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt.

Comment 3: This verse mentions one of Abishai’s important victories. The supporting information explains that he achieved it along with his men. In addition, he was in command of the forces that faced the Ammonites. In that campaign, he and Joab arranged their troops so that they could help one another if necessary. Thus, his contribution did not consist only of individual exploits; he also assumed responsibility by leading others in defense of the people.

Comment 4: David also relied on Abishai to deal with Sheba’s rebellion. According to the cited account, David considered that rebellion capable of causing great harm and instructed him to pursue the rebel with his servants. This detail shows that Abishai continued supporting David in difficult situations, not only when Saul was pursuing him. His loyalty was evident at different stages, as he made himself available to the king to deal with threats against the people.

Comment 5: One of his most decisive acts of help occurred when David was very tired during a battle against the Philistines. A giant wanted to kill him, and Abishai immediately intervened and struck down the attacker. In this way he saved David’s life. This episode shows in a very concrete way what his courage could accomplish: not only defeating enemies but also protecting a companion who at that moment needed help. David, although an experienced warrior, also needed assistance.

2. Why did David say that he was like “a partridge on the mountains”? (1 Sam. 26:20; it “Partridge” par. 4). A

Comment 1: The comparison fit the way David had to escape. According to Insight, the partridge tries to flee by running and hides among rocks, crevices, and other obstacles. David likewise went from one hiding place to another to avoid being killed by Saul. He was not describing a peaceful life in the mountains but the situation of someone being pursued who constantly had to look for a place of refuge. With a very simple image, he expressed what he was experiencing.

1 Samuel 26:20 — And now do not let my blood fall to the ground away from the presence of Jehovah, for the king of Israel has gone out to look for a single flea, as if he were chasing a partridge on the mountains.”

Comment 2: David emphasized how disproportionate that persecution was. The king of Israel had mobilized thousands of soldiers against someone who posed no threat to him. By comparing himself to a partridge, David was not challenging Saul but helping him see that it made no sense to devote so much effort to pursuing him.

Comment 3: Another detail that helps us understand the comparison is how partridges were hunted. They were driven out of their hiding places and could then be struck down with thrown sticks. This illustrates how vulnerable a fugitive felt when his refuge was discovered. Something similar had happened to David: The men of Ziph had revealed where he was hiding. The comparison helps us better understand the severity of that persecution and how much he needed to trust in Jehovah.

3. Why did David need patience? (w17.08 6, 7 pars. 14, 15).

Comment 1: David needed patience because a long time passed between his being chosen as the future king and the time he began to rule. The reference explains that he waited about 15 years to become king of his own tribe. Then he had to wait about seven more years to reign over all Israel. Although Jehovah had chosen him, the fulfillment of that promise was not immediate.

Comment 2: His waiting was especially difficult because it did not take place under comfortable conditions. During part of that time, Saul tried to kill him, and David had to take refuge in caves or live outside his country. He needed patience not only to receive a responsibility but also to endure injustices without taking revenge. This gives added weight to his decision to spare Saul’s life: He rejected what seemed like a quick way out because he did not want to run ahead of Jehovah by acting wrongly.

Psalms 13:5-6 — As for me, I trust in your loyal love; My heart will rejoice in your acts of salvation. I will sing to Jehovah, for he has richly rewarded me.

Comment 3: Here we see what sustained David’s patience: He trusted in Jehovah’s loyal love and remembered the good that Jehovah had already done for him. His attention was not focused only on how much longer his problems would last. Thinking about the help he had received gave him reasons to continue waiting confidently.

Comment 4: David’s patience did not mean that he never expressed his suffering. The reference points out that in Psalm 13 he asked Jehovah several times how long his problems would last. But he also expressed trust in Him. This teaches me that I can speak honestly to Jehovah when waiting is very difficult for me. Being patient does not require pretending that everything is easy; it means continuing to trust in him without allowing anxiety to lead me to disobey him.

4. How did David show many years later that he was modest? (w21.09 10 par. 8). B

1 Chronicles 17:4 — “Go and say to my servant David, ‘This is what Jehovah says: “You are not the one who will build the house for me to dwell in.

Comment 1: David wholeheartedly wanted to build a house for Jehovah, but he accepted that he would not be the one to build it. His modesty was evident in respecting a decision that affected a very personal desire. He did not insist that his position as king gave him the right to carry out the work. He let Jehovah decide who would have that responsibility.

Comment 2: David did not merely accept that Solomon would build the temple. He gave him practical support by gathering many materials before he died. This makes his modesty especially beautiful: Although he would not direct the construction, he continued working so that it would succeed. At times, accepting a change might seem to mean simply stopping doing something. David showed a much more generous attitude: looking for ways to contribute to the success of the one who now had the responsibility.

Comment 3: Solomon was young and inexperienced, and David knew it. However, he did not use those limitations as an argument for keeping the responsibility for himself. The reference explains that he understood that success depended on Jehovah’s blessing, not on the age or experience of the one directing the work. His modesty was therefore linked to faith: He could support Solomon because he trusted in Jehovah’s choice and help.

Comment 4: The application for older Christians is very encouraging. If some responsibilities pass to younger brothers, they can remain active and give them their support. David did not stop being useful because his role in the temple work changed. His example helps us value what we can still contribute, without measuring our service only by the tasks we direct. Willingly supporting others also demonstrates modesty and trust in Jehovah.

… our parents? C

Comment 1: We can imitate David by remembering that respecting our parents’ authority does not depend on their never making mistakes. David clearly saw Saul’s mistakes, but he did not use them as an excuse to treat him with contempt. At home, this may be reflected in how we respond to an instruction we do not like. We can express what we think respectfully, without mockery or hurtful words, and avoid allowing a difference of opinion to become a lack of consideration.

Comment 2: The picture presents an everyday situation: A young woman is leaving with a friend, and her mother points out some dirty dishes. One way to apply the lesson would be to take care of her household responsibility even if it interrupts her plans. An extraordinary situation is not needed to demonstrate respect. Sometimes it is seen in being willing to change what we wanted to do, listening to our parents, and cooperating without turning a simple task into an argument.

Comment 3: Courage is also needed to respect our parents in front of other people. If a friend encourages us to ignore an instruction, we might feel pressure not to appear too obedient. David likewise did not allow Abishai’s pressure to lead him to do what he considered wrong. His example can help us maintain a respectful decision even when someone does not understand it. What matters is not looking good in front of the person watching us, but acting with a good conscience.

… government authorities? D

Comment 1: David distinguished between Saul’s mistakes and the authority he possessed. We too can maintain a respectful attitude toward government authorities without approving of everything they do. That respect is seen in the way we speak and respond when dealing with them. We do not need to resort to insults or contempt to express a concern. The account reminds us that another person’s wrong conduct does not determine how we should behave.

Comment 2: The picture shows a family following a police officer’s instructions during a severe storm. This is a very practical application: We can show respect by cooperating with the authorities when they direct us to a safe place. Even if an emergency creates tension or disrupts our plans, remaining calm and following instructions makes it easier for them to help us. In that situation, respect does not remain just words; it is demonstrated by a cooperative attitude.

Comment 3: If we receive treatment that seems unfair to us, we can remember that David did not take revenge on Saul. He did not pretend that nothing was happening either: He asked Saul why he was pursuing him and made clear that he did not want to harm him. This teaches us to combine respect with firmness. We can explain a situation or express a concern calmly, without being carried away by the desire to return an offense. Self-control is also a form of courage.

… the elders in the congregation? E

Comment 1: We can show respect for the elders by listening to them attentively and being willing to cooperate. The principle we learn from David is that recognizing a responsibility does not require us to think that the person who has it is perfect. If we focused only on their limitations, we might lose sight of the work they do. A respectful attitude helps us consider their direction calmly instead of rejecting it outright because we would have done things differently.

Comment 2: In the picture, an older elder listens to a younger elder who is giving instructions about cart witnessing. The older brother may have a great deal of experience, but he can still listen and cooperate. This fits with David’s modesty when he supported Solomon. Age and years of service do not have to become a barrier. We can be happy that others take on responsibilities and contribute to helping them care for those responsibilities well.

Comment 3: Another way to show respect is to be careful about how we speak about the elders when they are not present. If we do not understand a decision, we can ask for clarification instead of making comments that promote contempt. David did not allow the pressure of those accompanying him to lead him to disrespect the king. Similarly, we can avoid joining in a negative conversation and seek a way to address the concern that contributes to peace.

David had the courage to listen to his conscience. In what situations might we need courage to listen to our conscience?

Comment 1: We may need courage when someone close to us suggests that we take revenge on a person who has treated us badly. Perhaps he tells us that the person deserves it or that this is our opportunity to teach him a lesson. Something similar happened when Abishai wanted to kill Saul. A Bible-trained conscience can warn us that we should not return the harm. Listening to it means rejecting the suggestion even if the person making it sincerely believes that he is helping us.

Comment 2: Courage is also needed when we have already done something and our conscience tells us that it was wrong. David could have minimized the seriousness of cutting off a piece of Saul’s garment, but he did not ignore what he felt. If we have spoken disrespectfully or treated someone badly, we may need to acknowledge it and apologize. It is easier to look for an excuse, but listening to our conscience helps us correct our conduct before it becomes a habit.

Comment 3: Sometimes the test arises when doing something wrong seems to solve a problem quickly. David could have freed himself from his pursuer by killing him, but he did not accept that shortcut. We might be tempted to hide a mistake or be untruthful to avoid unpleasant consequences. David’s example encourages us to ask ourselves what Jehovah thinks, not just what is convenient for us at that moment. A good conscience is worth more than a quick solution obtained in a wrong way.

In what other ways can you imitate the courage David demonstrated in this account?

Comment 1: I can imitate him by not allowing a disappointment to make me abandon what is right. The men of Ziph betrayed David a second time, and Saul continued pursuing him even though David had spared his life. Even so, David did not change his principles. If someone disappoints me again, I can strive not to respond with bitterness or revenge. Faithfulness to Jehovah does not have to depend on others’ reacting as I expected.

Comment 2: Another aspect is having the courage to stop someone when he is about to act wrongly. David did not remain silent when Abishai made his proposal; he corrected him and explained why they should not kill Saul. If a friend is very angry and wants to hurt someone with his words or actions, I can help him stop and think. Being a good friend does not always mean agreeing with him, but encouraging him to do what is right.

Comment 3: I can also combine courage with prudence. David respected Saul, but he continued taking measures to protect himself. When he left the camp, he spoke from a mountain, at a considerable distance. This reminds me that forgiving or not taking revenge does not mean ignoring a danger. I can maintain a respectful attitude and at the same time act cautiously. David did not need to put himself within Saul’s reach again to demonstrate that he did not want to harm him.

What does this account teach me about Jehovah?

Comment 1: It teaches me that Jehovah can help his servants even when they seem to be at a clear disadvantage. Saul had many more soldiers than David did, but that did not prevent Jehovah from protecting him. On that occasion, he caused the men in the camp to fall into a deep sleep. The account helps us see why David trusted in his help: Jehovah’s power was not limited by the size of the enemy army or by the position Saul held.

Comment 2: It also teaches me that we can leave justice in Jehovah’s hands. David was sure that Jehovah would deal with Saul in His own time, so he did not need to take revenge. Waiting did not mean that Saul’s conduct was acceptable or that Jehovah overlooked it. It meant trusting that He knew how and when to act. That trust can help us avoid allowing an injustice to push us into committing another one.

Comment 3: The account shows that Jehovah values loyalty and does not forget those who endeavor to please him. David went through a long and painful period of waiting, but the chapter ends by reminding us that Jehovah rewarded him for his loyalty and courage. This encourages me not to measure Jehovah’s approval solely by how easy my life happens to be at a given moment. David had Jehovah’s support even while he was still a fugitive and his problems had not yet ended.

How does this account relate to Jehovah’s purpose and the main theme of the Bible?

Comment 1: This account highlights Jehovah’s right to direct his people and decide who would rule them. David already knew that he would become king, but he did not consider that to be permission to eliminate Saul. He respected Jehovah’s authority over the situation. Thus, the issue was not simply which of the two men had the better chance of winning, but whether David would trust in Jehovah’s way of ruling and submit to it.

Comment 2: We also see that Saul’s opposition did not prevent what Jehovah had announced about David from coming true. There was persecution, betrayal, and a long period of waiting, but David eventually became king. This helps us trust in the fulfillment of Jehovah’s purpose. The existence of obstacles, or our not seeing an immediate solution, does not mean that his purpose has failed. David had to learn to look beyond his present circumstances.

Comment 3: David’s decision also shows how a person can support Jehovah’s authority by his conduct. When Saul was defenseless in front of him, David put what Jehovah considered right above his own immediate benefit. He did not express trust only with words; he demonstrated it by giving up revenge. The account invites us to do the same: to recognize Jehovah’s authority through loyal decisions, especially when obedience requires patience or some personal sacrifice.

When David is resurrected, what would I like to ask him about this period of his life?

Comment 1: I would like to ask him what helped him most during the days when he had to change hiding places because of Saul. We know that he trusted in Jehovah, but it would be wonderful to hear him explain how he maintained that trust during such a long persecution. In particular, I would be interested to know how he remembered the help he had already received and how those memories encouraged him to keep waiting without giving up or taking justice into his own hands.

Comment 2: I would ask him how he experienced the moment when he had to stop Abishai while Saul was asleep. The account tells us what he replied, but I would like to hear from him how that experience tested his resolve to respect Jehovah’s anointed one. I would also ask him what he learned from what happened in the cave, when his conscience troubled him because he had cut off the edge of Saul’s garment, and how that lesson influenced his later decisions.

Comment 3: I would like to ask him how he viewed those years of waiting once he became king. While he was fleeing, he could not know all the details of how his difficulties would end. It would be encouraging to hear him speak about what he learned regarding patience, Jehovah’s loyal love, and the courage to maintain a good conscience.
