When someone speaks badly about a person we love, it hurts us. We do not think only about a name, but about the person behind it\u2014his qualities, intentions, and way of treating others. Something much more important is at stake when Jehovah is slandered. We love our Father and want everyone to know what he is really like. That is why his name matters so much to us.<\/p>
To understand why nothing is more important than Jehovah\u2019s name, let us think about what happened in Eden. Satan did not merely suggest a wrong course of action. First, he attacked God\u2019s reputation. He implied that Jehovah was not generous and that his restrictions were too strict. Then he contradicted what God had said, portraying him as a liar. He wanted Eve to distrust Jehovah and, as a result, to stop obeying him.<\/p>
Thus, that rebellion was directly related to the way people viewed Jehovah. If a person believes that God is unjust or that he is withholding something good, it will be easier for that person to reject his guidance. Satan continues to use lies to cause such distrust. Therefore, sanctifying Jehovah\u2019s name involves much more than pronouncing it respectfully: We want it to be cleared of all slander and for everyone to regard it as holy.<\/p>
Jehovah is determined to clear his name for the good of all creation. Jesus also highlighted that priority when he taught his disciples to pray for his Father\u2019s name to be sanctified. This helps us to put our own concerns in the right order. Our needs are important to Jehovah, but we do not want to think only about them. We want our prayers to reflect how much his reputation matters to us.<\/p>
Furthermore, the importance of that name will not disappear when the issues related to the rebellion have been resolved. Jehovah\u2019s purpose is for his holy name to be praised forever. So this is not a temporary matter. Knowing and honoring Jehovah will continue to give meaning to our worship. But if his name is so important, what has he done to defend it against the accusations?<\/p>
Jehovah has not remained indifferent or left Satan\u2019s lies unanswered. His actions demonstrate what he is really like. In Ezekiel chapter 20, we find an explanation that Jehovah himself repeated when discussing the way he dealt with Israel. Let us listen to Ezekiel 20:9, 14, and 22, and note the reason he emphasized.<\/p>
Ezekiel 20:9,14,22<\/strong> \u2014 But I acted for the sake of my name so that it would not be profaned before the nations among whom they were living. For I made myself known to them before these nations when I brought them out of the land of Egypt. But I acted for the sake of my own name so that it would not be profaned before the nations, in whose sight I brought them out. But I refrained and acted for the sake of my own name, so that it should not be profaned before the nations, in whose sight I brought them out.<\/em><\/p> In all three verses, Jehovah links his decisions to the holiness of his name. He had brought the Israelites out of Egypt in the sight of other nations. The way he treated them affected what those nations would think of him. Therefore, his reputation was not a secondary detail. Even when exercising restraint, he kept in mind that his name should not be profaned. His decisions were guided by something far greater than the conduct of those Israelites.<\/p> This helps us not to confuse Jehovah\u2019s patience with weakness or lack of interest. The rebellion has caused him pain, but he has handled the situation with wisdom, patience, and justice. He has also demonstrated his power and, above all, his love. He does not need to act hastily to prove that he is right. Everything he does helps to show that the accusations against him are false and that he deserves our trust.<\/p> The Bible provides a complete answer to those accusations: By means of the Kingdom in the hands of his Son, Jehovah sanctifies his name and restores peace and justice to the earth. Remembering this sustains us when we see suffering and wickedness. Even though we do not understand every situation, we know that Jehovah has never stopped working to sanctify his name. And that leads us to a personal question: Can we contribute to honoring him?<\/p> Yes, Jehovah allows his servants to share in something so valuable. In the same chapter of Ezekiel, he announced that he would gather his people and accept their worship again. As we listen to the promise, let us note the relationship between the service of his people and the sanctification of his name. Let us read Ezekiel 20:40 and 41.<\/p> Ezekiel 20:40-41<\/strong> \u2014 \u201c\u2018For in my holy mountain, on a high mountain of Israel,\u2019 declares the Sovereign Lord Jehovah, \u2018is where the whole house of Israel, all of them, will serve me in the land. I will take pleasure in them there, and I will require your contributions and the firstfruits of your offerings, all your holy things. Because of the pleasing aroma, I will take pleasure in you when I bring you out from the peoples and collect you together from the lands to which you have been scattered; and I will be sanctified among you before the eyes of the nations.\u2019<\/em><\/p> Jehovah promised that he would take pleasure in his people and in their offerings. Pure worship would be restored. But accepting those offerings did not mean that the conduct of those presenting them was unimportant. The Jews who returned would have to remain obedient and spiritually clean. In that way they would enjoy forgiveness and a close relationship with God. Their worship and their way of life had to be in harmony; both had to bring honor to Jehovah.<\/p> Christians do not offer animal sacrifices. We offer praise to Jehovah and preach the message about him. The reference material highlights that, from 1919 onward, the faithful and discreet slave gave even greater importance to the preaching work and organized it more thoroughly. Thus, an increasing number of God\u2019s servants have offered praise to his name. When we share in the ministry and praise Jehovah at the meetings, we too bring him honor.<\/p> But our words must be accompanied by actions. Think of an everyday situation: Someone knows that we are Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses and observes how we respond when we are treated badly. A respectful response and the effort to remain calm may help that person to form a good opinion of the God we serve. The same is true when we are honest even though it is difficult. We do not seek to have people admire us; rather, we want our conduct to bring honor to Jehovah.<\/p> We can also strengthen that desire through family worship. One suggestion is to watch the video \u201cFather, Glorify Your Name\u201d and discuss how the New World Translation sanctifies Jehovah\u2019s name. Then we might ask ourselves: \u201cHow can we use what we have learned to help someone come to know Jehovah better?\u201d That conversation can help us connect our study with the ministry and with our daily decisions. In this way, honoring his name will be a priority shared by the whole family.<\/p> Nothing is more important than Jehovah\u2019s name. He has never stopped acting to sanctify it, and he gives us the honor of cooperating with him through our worship and conduct. When making decisions this week, let us ask ourselves: \u201cWill what I am about to say or do bring honor to Jehovah?\u201d May our love for him move us to defend his good reputation and help others
