Why did Jehovah say that Israel was “the most beautiful [or “the decoration,” footnote] of all the lands”? (w20.05 13 par. 7).

Ezekiel 20:6 — In that day I swore that I would bring them out of the land of Egypt to a land that I had searched out for them, one flowing with milk and honey. It was the most beautiful of all the lands.

Answer 1: What made the land of Israel especially beautiful was that Jehovah was worshipped there. Although the passage also highlights its abundance, the explanation points to a spiritual reason for describing it that way. Therefore, its beauty was not limited to what the land produced or to its physical features. What really distinguished it was its relationship with the worship of the true God.

Answer 2: Jehovah considered it especially beautiful because it was a land where he was worshipped. This detail helps us understand the expression “Beautiful Land” that appears in Daniel’s prophecy. The explanation connects both expressions through the worship of Jehovah, not simply through a description of the landscape. Thus, the importance that land had in ancient times serves as a starting point for understanding the spiritual meaning of that prophetic expression.

Answer 3: Israel’s special beauty was linked to the worship of Jehovah. However, the explanation clarifies that, since Pentecost 33 C.E., the expression “Beautiful Land” no longer refers to a literal geographical location. This clarification is important: We should not automatically apply the description of ancient Israel to a present-day territory. The key to understanding the expression continues to be the worship of Jehovah, not a location on the map.

Answer 4: What mattered was that Jehovah was worshipped in Israel. So, when explaining what the “Beautiful Land” represents today, we do not refer to a country where all his servants are concentrated. The explanation emphasizes that Jehovah’s people are scattered throughout the earth. This reality helps us understand why the expression now has a symbolic meaning: What unites his servants is the worship of Jehovah, not living in the same territory.

Answer 5: Israel was especially beautiful because of the worship offered there to Jehovah. The explanation applies that same idea by describing today’s “Beautiful Land” as the symbolic place where God’s people carry out their spiritual activities. These include meetings and the preaching work. Thus, the central element of the description is the worship of Jehovah: That is what distinguished the ancient land and helps us understand what the expression represents today.

What spiritual gems have you found in this week’s Bible reading?

Spiritual Gems for EZEKIEL 19

Ezekiel 19:1 — “You must sing a dirge concerning the chieftains of Israel

Comment 1: Ezekiel 19:1 presents the message as a dirge about the chieftains of Israel. That tone reminds me that the consequences of bad conduct are a cause for sadness, not satisfaction. When someone suffers because of his mistakes, I do not want to react with superiority. I can recognize the seriousness of what happened while also showing sensitivity to the pain it causes.

Ezekiel 19:3 — She raised one of her cubs, and he became a strong young lion. He learned how to tear prey apart, He even devoured humans.

Comment 2: At Ezekiel 19:3, the cub becomes a strong lion, but he uses his strength to cause harm. The image makes me think that having ability or energy is not enough; what matters is how we use it. In the family or congregation, we would never want to use an advantage to impose ourselves on others. We can ask ourselves whether the way we speak and act protects others or makes them feel small. Strength is valuable when it is used to help.

Ezekiel 19:4 — Nations heard about him and caught him in their pit, And they brought him to the land of Egypt with hooks.

Comment 3: Ezekiel 19:4 shows that, despite its strength, that lion ended up being caught and taken to Egypt. His power did not make him invulnerable. This reminds me that neither personal ability nor a prominent position guarantees security. It would be a mistake to think that we can act without limits because nothing has stopped us so far. The image encourages us to be modest, recognize our limitations, and not confuse the strength we have with protection that can never fail.

Ezekiel 19:5 — She waited and eventually saw that there was no hope for his return. So she took another of her cubs and sent him out as a strong young lion.

Comment 4: At Ezekiel 19:5, the lioness waits for the return of the first cub, but eventually realizes that this hope will not be fulfilled and chooses another. I am struck by the disappointment conveyed by the scene. As an application, it reminds me that it is not wise to place all our trust in one person or think that his presence will solve every difficulty. We can greatly value the help of others without making them the basis of our spiritual security. That place belongs to Jehovah.

Ezekiel 19:6 — He also walked about among the lions and became a strong young lion. He learned how to tear prey apart, and he even devoured humans.

Comment 5: Ezekiel 19:6 describes how the second lion also learned to cause harm. Changing the main character did not result in a change of conduct. This makes me think about the importance of learning from the mistakes we observe. It is not enough to say that we would act differently; we need to examine which examples we are following and what habits we are acquiring. If we recognize a harmful way of treating others, it is sensible to correct it, not repeat it simply because it is familiar.

Ezekiel 19:7 — He prowled among their fortified towers and devastated their cities, So that the desolate land was filled with the sound of his roaring.

Comment 6: At Ezekiel 19:7, the lion’s conduct leaves cities devastated and a land desolate. The damage does not affect him alone; it affects those around him. This encourages me to think about the effect my decisions have on others. An aggressive reaction can disturb the peace of an entire family or group. Before speaking harshly, it is wise to ask myself what kind of atmosphere I will leave behind: one of calm or one of fear.

Ezekiel 19:9 — With hooks they put him in a cage and brought him to the king of Babylon. There they confined him, so that his voice would no more be heard on the mountains of Israel.

Comment 7: Ezekiel 19:9 ends by describing the lion confined, with its roar no longer heard on the mountains of Israel. There is a strong contrast between the noise it once made and the final silence. This reminds me that intimidating others does not create lasting or trustworthy influence. In our relationships, it is far better for people to listen to us because we treat them with respect, not because they fear our reaction. The volume of a voice does not prove its value.

Ezekiel 19:10 — Your mother was like a vine in your blood, planted by waters. It bore fruit and was full of branches because of the abundant water.

Comment 8: Ezekiel 19:10 presents a vine that produces fruit because of an abundance of water. The image highlights that its development was related to what it received. As an application, it reminds me that my spiritual growth should not be taken for granted either. I need to continue benefiting from spiritual food and the help I receive in the congregation. If I have good opportunities to learn about Jehovah, I want to value and use them instead of expecting good results while neglecting what can strengthen my faith.

Ezekiel 19:11 — It developed strong branches, fit for the scepters of rulers. It grew and towered over the other trees, And it became visible because of its height and because of the abundance of its foliage.

Comment 9: At Ezekiel 19:11, the vine stands out because of its height and has strong branches suitable for the scepters of rulers. However, that impressive appearance does not tell its whole story. This reminds me that what is visible is not the only measure by which to value someone. Ability, experience, or recognition may attract attention, but they do not replace faithfulness to Jehovah. When examining my progress, I want to focus less on how prominent I am and more on the kind of person I am becoming.

Ezekiel 19:12 — But in fury she was uprooted and thrown to the earth, And an east wind dried up her fruit. Her strong branches were torn off and became dry, and fire consumed them.

Comment 10: Ezekiel 19:12 describes a drastic change: The vine is uprooted, its fruit dries up, and its branches are consumed. Its former prosperity did not prevent its ruin. As a personal lesson, this encourages me not to rest solely on what I did well in the past. Having had good habits or having served enthusiastically does not mean that I can neglect myself now. My relationship with Jehovah needs constant attention. What matters is not merely having been strong but continuing to care for my spirituality.

Ezekiel 19:13 — Now she is planted in the wilderness, In a waterless, thirsty land.

Comment 11: At Ezekiel 19:13, the vine appears in a dry land, very different from the well-watered place it previously occupied. This contrast helps me value the conditions that support our worship. Being able to meet together, receive Bible instruction, and encourage one another are not unimportant details. They are opportunities worth using. I would not want to become so accustomed to them that I stopped appreciating them. The image of dryness moves me to be grateful for and care for the spiritual support I have.

Ezekiel 19:14 — The fire spread from her branches and consumed her shoots and her fruit, And there was no strong branch left, no scepter for ruling. “‘That is a dirge, and it will serve as a dirge.’”

Comment 12: Ezekiel 19:14 points out that the fire spread from the vine’s own branches and consumed its shoots. This detail reminds me that not all dangers come from outside. We also need to watch attitudes that could grow within us, such as resentment or the desire to impose ourselves. If we let them develop, they can harm relationships that we value greatly. Therefore, before focusing on the faults of others, I want to examine what I need to correct in my own conduct.

Spiritual Gems for EZEKIEL 20

Ezekiel 20:3 — “Son of man, speak with the elders of Israel, and tell them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord Jehovah says: “Are you coming to inquire of me? ‘As surely as I am alive, I will not respond to your inquiry,’ declares the Sovereign Lord Jehovah.”’

Comment 1: At Ezekiel 20:3, Jehovah refuses to answer the elders who come to consult him. The chapter shows that there was a problem of disobedience. This reminds me that seeking guidance should not be a mere formality. When I ask Jehovah for help, I need to be willing to listen and change. It would not be consistent to ask for his direction while deciding in advance to ignore what I do not like.

Ezekiel 20:7 — I then said to them, ‘Each of you must throw away the detestable things that are before your eyes; do not defile yourselves with the disgusting idols of Egypt. It was not enough to belong to the people; each one had a personal responsibility. This encourages me to examine my own decisions without taking refuge in what others do. If I discover something incompatible with the worship of Jehovah, I need to act. Faithfulness consists not only in expressing that we love God but also in removing from our life what he disapproves of.

Ezekiel 20:9 — But I acted for the sake of my name so that it would not be profaned before the nations among whom they were living. This teaches me that his name deserves deep respect. It also helps me think about the responsibility of identifying myself as one of his Witnesses. My conduct can influence the impression others form of the worship of Jehovah. Therefore, when dealing with neighbors or workmates, I want my honesty and respect to agree with what I preach.

Ezekiel 20:11 — “‘“I then gave them my statutes and made my judicial decisions known to them, so that the man who follows them may have life by them.

Comment 4: Ezekiel 20:11 explains that Jehovah gave Israel regulations connected with the life of those who obeyed them. They were not instructions without purpose; they were intended for the good of his people. This helps me view Jehovah’s commands with confidence, not as obstacles to my happiness. When Bible guidance requires me to change something, I can ask myself what harm it helps me avoid. In the ministry, we can also highlight the benefits of obeying Jehovah instead of presenting only a list of prohibitions.

Ezekiel 20:16 — because they rejected my judicial decisions, they did not walk in my statutes, and they profaned my sabbaths, for their heart was following after their disgusting idols.

Comment 5: Ezekiel 20:16 connects the Israelites’ disobedience with their following their heart. The problem was not only in their outward actions but also in their desires. This encourages me to examine what is gaining space within me. A habit may seem small, but I should ask myself where it is directing my affections. Caring for faithfulness to Jehovah includes reviewing what I feed with my thoughts and not waiting for a harmful desire to become an action.

Ezekiel 20:17 — “‘“But I felt sorry for them, and I did not destroy them; I did not exterminate them in the wilderness.

Comment 6: At Ezekiel 20:17, Jehovah says that he felt sorry for the Israelites and did not exterminate them. It is touching to see his compassion in an account that also denounces serious sins. Jehovah did not overlook wickedness, but neither did he act without mercy. This helps me avoid an unbalanced view of him. When I read his warnings, I want to remember his ability to show compassion as well. And when dealing with others, I want to recognize their mistakes without losing sensitivity toward them.

Ezekiel 20:18 — I said to their sons in the wilderness, ‘Do not walk in the regulations of your forefathers or keep their judgments or defile yourselves with their disgusting idols.

Comment 7: Ezekiel 20:18 shows that Jehovah asked the sons not to repeat the wrong practices of their forefathers. A custom does not become right simply because it has been passed down in a family. This can help us examine religious traditions or ways of acting that we have known since childhood. We can respect our relatives while comparing their customs with what Jehovah teaches. We are not obligated to repeat a mistake; we can choose a course that pleases God.

Ezekiel 20:32 — And what you have in mind when you say, “Let us become like the nations, like the families of the other lands, who worship wood and stone,” it will never happen.’”

Comment 8: At Ezekiel 20:32, the Israelites wanted to be like the nations that practiced idolatry. Their desire to fit in was affecting their worship. This reminds me that majority pressure does not make a practice acceptable to Jehovah. Before adopting a custom, I need to ask whether it agrees with my faith, not merely whether everyone follows it. Being different may be uncomfortable, but we do not have to give up our convictions in order to treat others with kindness and respect.

Ezekiel 20:40 — “‘For in my holy mountain, on a high mountain of Israel,’ declares the Sovereign Lord Jehovah, ‘is where the whole house of Israel, all of them, will serve me in the land. This adds a note of hope after so many denunciations of unfaithfulness. It encourages me to think that Jehovah not only points out what is wrong; he also expresses what kind of service he gladly accepts. When preparing for a meeting or sharing in the ministry, I want to remember that this is not merely a matter of completing a task but of offering him worship that pleases him.

Ezekiel 20:42 — “‘And you will have to know that I am Jehovah when I bring you to the land of Israel, into the land that I swore to give to your forefathers.

Comment 10: At Ezekiel 20:42, Jehovah connects the return to the land of Israel with the oath he had made to their forefathers. By fulfilling his word, he would give his people another reason to recognize who he is. This teaches me that we can know Jehovah better by paying attention to his faithfulness, not merely by learning facts about him. When I read a Bible promise, I want to remember the importance he himself attaches to his word. His way of acting gives us reasons to trust him.

Ezekiel 20:43 — And there you will remember your conduct and all your deeds by which you defiled yourselves, and you will loathe yourselves because of all the bad things that you did.

Comment 11: Ezekiel 20:43 describes how the Israelites would remember their conduct and feel deep disgust over what they had done. This shows a change in how they viewed their sins: They would no longer justify them. It helps me understand that recognizing a mistake involves more than regretting its consequences. I need to accept that it was wrong and stop making excuses. When examining myself, I can ask whether I merely want to avoid the discomfort my conduct caused or whether I truly want to turn away from it.

Ezekiel 20:49 — And I said: “Alas, O Sovereign Lord Jehovah!
