In this five-minute discussion with the audience, the setting is the house-to-house ministry. We will consider a first contact with the man in the picture, review Enjoy Life Forever, lesson 2, “Naturalness,” point 3, and use Acts 8:30, 31.

The objective is to be observant. Point 3 invites us to notice facial expressions and body language so that we can perceive whether someone wants to talk. It also suggests introducing a Bible thought with a simple question, such as “Did you know . . .?” And it points out an important limit: If someone does not want to talk, we should not insist.

Let us look at the picture. We see a smiling man repairing his car in the driveway of his home. That is what we know. We cannot be sure that he is a mechanic, that he enjoys making repairs, or that he is having difficulties. Observing carefully also means distinguishing between what we actually see and what we imagine.

Based on what we see in the picture, what could you say to start a conversation? One possibility would be to say hello and comment: “Good morning. I see that you are working on your car. Do you have a moment, or would you rather I let you continue?” It is a simple opening: It acknowledges his activity and lets him decide, without assuming that he wants to listen to us.

After the greeting, listening is more important than completing a presentation. If he answers briefly and remains focused on the repair, it would not be wise to string together questions to keep his attention. We can say goodbye kindly. His initial smile does not obligate us to continue, nor does it turn his courtesy into an invitation to present everything we had prepared.

If, on the other hand, he sets aside what he is doing for a moment and comments on the work, we can respond to that comment. For example, if he explains that he is learning to repair it, it would make sense to ask: “Did you learn on your own, or did someone teach you?” It would not be an intimate question or an abrupt change; we would continue talking about what he had just mentioned.

Here we may find common ground. Learning something practical usually requires explanations, observation, and patience. If the man says that someone helped him, we could acknowledge how useful a good explanation can be. But there is no need to pretend to know about mechanics or claim that the same thing happened to us. Sincere interest does not require invented experiences.

What scripture would you show? One option is Acts 8:30, 31, especially if the conversation has turned to the value of receiving help to learn. It does not talk about repairing cars; it presents a man who needed help to understand what he was reading. To see why it may fit, let us listen to what happened when Philip approached him.

Acts 8:30-31 — Philip ran alongside and heard him reading aloud Isaiah the prophet, and he said: “Do you actually know what you are reading?” He said: “Really, how could I ever do so unless someone guided me?” So he urged Philip to get on and sit down with him.

Philip paid attention to what that man was doing: He heard him reading. His question was directly related to that activity. In addition, the man’s answer showed that he wanted help, and he himself invited Philip to sit beside him. It was not necessary to guess at his interest; he expressed it in his own words.

At the car scene, we could introduce that account by saying: “Did you know that the Bible tells about a man who asked for help to understand what he was reading?” We could then offer to show him the passage. That transition would be natural if he had previously spoken about learning with help. If that connection does not arise, we do not have to force it.

After reading it, it would be enough to highlight one thought: Asking questions and accepting an explanation can help us understand the Bible. We could ask whether he has ever found something difficult to understand when reading it. But that question would make sense only if he continues to show interest. We do not need to go from a greeting to a deep conversation in a few seconds.

We must also be prepared for a different reaction. Perhaps the person enjoys talking about cars but does not want to discuss the Bible. In that case, having found a subject of everyday interest does not give us the right to insist. We can thank him for his time and let him continue. Respecting his decision is part of applying the counsel from the lesson.

Or he may say that he does not need help to read. We should not argue or imply that he knows little. The account shows someone who did want help; it does not prove that everyone should react in the same way. Listening to that difference allows us to adapt the conversation instead of trying to take it in a direction the person has not chosen.

Thus, the approach is natural, respectful, and adaptable. Natural, because it starts with a visible activity. Respectful, because it asks whether it is a good time and accepts a refusal. Adaptable, because the next comment depends on the answer, not on a memorized text. The same opening phrase does not have to produce the same development every time.

The picture reminds us of a simple guideline: Observe before speaking and keep observing while listening. We can prepare a relevant question and scripture, but we leave room for the person to express himself. In this way we apply point 3: We take advantage of an opportunity to converse naturally, without turning it into an obligation for the person who answers the door.

Following Up

Assignment details

Assignment: Following Up
Duration: 2 min
Lesson and point: Lesson 9 · Empathy · point 5
Teaching objective: Use information that will be useful to the person. Title: God’s Kingdom Is the Only Solution to Mankind’s Problems (th lesson 18).

Having a peaceful home, enjoying the fruitage of our work, and watching our children grow up happy. These are not extravagant desires. They are simple things that make life beautiful. Yet for many people they seem difficult to attain. What would have to change for everyone to enjoy them securely?

Perhaps our first answer would be: The wars must end. And that is understandable. But let us think a little further. Even where there is no war, there may be violence, injustice, or fear of the future. Therefore, the solution mankind needs must go beyond stopping the fighting.

God’s Kingdom is the only solution to mankind’s problems. To understand this statement better, let us consider the scope of Jehovah’s promises—what he will eliminate and what he will make possible for us to enjoy. That difference will help us see the promised peace as something much more complete than the absence of war.

Let us begin with something that no family can achieve on its own: a world free from wars. A person may strive to live peacefully, but he cannot end all conflicts. Jehovah promises to do so. Let us listen to how Psalms 46:9 describes his intervention.

Psalms 46:9 — He is bringing an end to wars throughout the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; He burns the military wagons with fire.

Notice two details. First, the promise covers the entire earth; it leaves no region out. Second, Jehovah does not merely interrupt a battle; he destroys the instruments of war mentioned in the psalm. The picture conveys a powerful idea: He has the ability to end wars, not merely ease them.

But an important question remains. Even if the weapons of war disappeared, would we feel safe if there were people determined to do harm? Peace also requires that wickedness disappear. Jehovah does not overlook that problem. To see how he will solve it, let us read Psalms 37:10, 11.

Psalms 37:10-11 — Just a little while longer, and the wicked will be no more; You will look at where they were, And they will not be there. But the meek will possess the earth, And they will find exquisite delight in the abundance of peace.

Here we find more than the disappearance of the wicked. We are also told who will live on the earth and what their life will be like. The meek will enjoy peace. Thus, Jehovah will not merely remove what threatens tranquility; he will make possible a life in which that tranquility can be enjoyed fully.

Think about the difference between having a moment of calm and living in peace. A moment of calm can end with a threat or an injustice. Jehovah’s promise does not simply describe a respite. It invites us to imagine a life without wicked people who ruin the security of others.

Now, a happy life consists of more than being safe. We also want to do useful things, care for our family, and enjoy what we achieve through our efforts. Does Jehovah’s solution include these very personal needs? Let us consider the details of Isaiah 65:21-23.

Isaiah 65:21-23 — They will build houses and live in them, And they will plant vineyards and eat their fruitage. They will not build for someone else to inhabit, Nor will they plant for others to eat. For the days of my people will be like the days of a tree, And the work of their hands my chosen ones will enjoy to the full. They will not toil for nothing, Nor will they bear children for distress, Because they are the offspring made up of those blessed by Jehovah, And their descendants with them.

How interesting: This description does not portray people with nothing to do. It speaks of building and planting. There will be activity and work, but not frustrating effort. Those who build will enjoy their home, and those who plant will enjoy what the land produces. Work will be accompanied by satisfaction.

Imagine a family enjoying their home together after a day of productive work. The most valuable thing would not be merely the house or the food. It would be the security of being able to enjoy them without others taking away the results of their efforts. That gives depth to the promise.

The passage also takes children into account. Jehovah knows that parents think not only about their own well-being; they are concerned about their family’s future. His promise responds to that concern. The blessings it describes are not impersonal: They reach the home, work, and family life.

How does this information help us now? When a concern overwhelms us, we can identify which aspect of these promises responds to it. If wars distress us, let us remember their worldwide scope. If injustice pains us, let us think about the disappearance of wickedness. If we fear for our family, let us meditate on the security Jehovah promises.

This does not mean ignoring current problems or minimizing suffering. It means not allowing problems to be the only thing occupying our mind. By meditating on specific Bible details, our hope ceases to be a general idea and becomes connected with what we experience each day.

Therefore, God’s Kingdom does not offer a partial solution. Jehovah will end wars and wickedness, and he will make it possible for people to enjoy peace, a home, and productive work. That is why we can trust in his Kingdom: Its promises respond to mankind’s real needs.

Assignments and examples for Apply Yourself to the Field
