(it “Vision” par. 12)

Ezekiel 13:10 — All of this is because they have led my people astray by saying, “There is peace!” when there is no peace. When a flimsy partition wall is built, they are plastering it with whitewash.’

Answer 1: Because those messages did not have Jehovah’s backing. The false prophets communicated ideas that came from their own hearts, not visions that God had given them. So although their words may have sounded convincing, they had no real value. The comparison to a flimsy partition wall covered with whitewash highlighted this very point: its appearance might have been reassuring, but underneath there was nothing solid to justify the people’s trust.

Answer 2: The whitewash accurately represented the effect of their messages: it concealed the wall’s weakness without making it strong. The prophets announced peace for Jerusalem when there was actually no peace. Thus they gave a dangerous situation an appearance of security. The problem was not simply that their words were overly optimistic, but that they presented as certain something Jehovah had not promised and thereby led the people astray.

Answer 3: The illustration also distinguishes between building a flimsy wall and coating it with whitewash. The false prophets contributed to the deception by supporting with their announcements of peace a security that had no foundation. Instead of communicating the truth from Jehovah, they reinforced the impression that everything was fine. Their messages were like an outer layer that hid the problem but did not solve it or protect those who relied on it.

Answer 4: The weakness of those messages would be demonstrated when Jerusalem’s destruction came. Before 607 B.C.E., the false prophets had announced their own visions. But a human prediction could not prevent what Jehovah had determined from coming true. Just as a coating of whitewash cannot keep a weak wall from collapsing in a storm, their promises of peace could not offer protection from God’s judgment.

Answer 5: There was also a decisive reason why that wall could not stand: Jehovah was against the false prophets. They did not speak the truth and attributed to God messages he had not given them. Thus their visions were not merely worthless; they put them in opposition to Jehovah himself. The whitewash might impress those who heard their promises, but it could not hide the lie from God or prevent him from acting against them.

What spiritual gems from this week’s Bible reading have you enjoyed?

Spiritual Gems From EZEKIEL 13

Ezekiel 13:1 — And the word of Jehovah again came to me, saying:

Comment 1: Ezekiel 13:1 makes clear where the prophet’s message came from: Jehovah. Ezekiel did not have to invent something interesting to say. This reminds me that in the ministry, the most valuable things are not my opinions or my ability to speak, but helping a person learn what Jehovah has communicated.

Ezekiel 13:3 — This is what the Sovereign Lord Jehovah says: “Woe to the stupid prophets, who follow their own spirit, when they have seen nothing!

Comment 2: Ezekiel 13:3 shows the danger of following our own ideas and presenting them as though they came from Jehovah. Those prophets spoke without having received any vision from him. This teaches me to recognize the limits of what I know. If a matter is not explained in the available Bible information, it is better to admit that than to fill the gap with assumptions. The confidence with which someone speaks does not turn a personal idea into Bible truth.

Ezekiel 13:5 — You will not go to the broken places in the stone walls to rebuild them for the house of Israel, so that Israel may keep standing in the battle in the day of Jehovah.”

Comment 3: At Ezekiel 13:5, Jehovah pointed out that those prophets did not repair the breaches or help the people stand firm. Their influence did not strengthen them for what was coming. This makes me think about how I help a brother who is facing difficulties. It is not enough to say something pleasant. I want to listen and share a Bible thought that truly strengthens him instead of merely reassuring him without addressing his spiritual need.

Ezekiel 13:6 — “They have seen false visions and foretold a lie, those who are saying, ‘The word of Jehovah is,’ when Jehovah himself has not sent them, and they have waited for their word to come true.

Comment 4: Ezekiel 13:6 says that the false prophets even expected their words to come true, although Jehovah had not sent them. This shows that confidently expecting something does not prove that God supports it. When speaking about Bible promises, I must distinguish between what Jehovah has assured us of and what I would like to happen. In this way I avoid creating personal expectations and help others put their trust in God’s promises.

Ezekiel 13:8 — “‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord Jehovah says: “‘Because you have spoken what is false and your visions are a lie, I am against you,’ declares the Sovereign Lord Jehovah.”

Comment 5: Ezekiel 13:8 teaches us that Jehovah is not indifferent to lies spoken in his name. He opposed those who presented false visions as his messages. This helps me appreciate how much truth matters to him. When I speak about Jehovah, I want to make sure that what I say is truly supported by his Word. Representing him well is more important than making a good impression or giving a quick answer to every question.

Ezekiel 13:9 — My hand is against the prophets whose visions are false and who foretell a lie. Although they presented themselves as prophets of his people, that did not assure them of his approval. The lesson for me is that I must not be satisfied with a spiritual appearance. What I truly want to protect is my relationship with Jehovah by being honest and making sure that my conduct matches what I claim to believe.

Ezekiel 13:10 — All of this is because they have led my people astray by saying, “There is peace!” when there is no peace. When a flimsy partition wall is built, they are plastering it with whitewash.’

Comment 7: Ezekiel 13:10 shows that a reassuring message can be harmful if it hides reality. The false prophets announced peace and thus led the people astray. When I ask for advice, this verse encourages me not to seek only an answer that makes me feel comfortable. I may need to hear something that helps me correct a decision. It is much better to accept a truth that protects me than a pleasant opinion that leaves the problem untouched.

Ezekiel 13:11 — “Tell those plastering with whitewash that it will fall. A torrential downpour will come, hailstones will fall, and powerful windstorms will break it down.

Comment 8: At Ezekiel 13:11, the storm would expose the wall’s weakness. The whitewash could not give it the strength it lacked. This invites me to ask what my trust in Jehovah rests on. I do not want it to depend only on favorable circumstances. Studying his Word and putting it into practice helps strengthen that trust, so that difficulties do not find me with merely superficial faith.

Ezekiel 13:17 — “As for you, son of man, set your face against the daughters of your people who fabricate their own prophecies, and prophesy against them.

Comment 9: Ezekiel 13:17 shows that Ezekiel also had to denounce the prophecies invented by some women of his people. Falsehood had to be exposed regardless of who spread it. This teaches me to evaluate a teaching by its content and its agreement with God’s Word, not by the appeal of the person presenting it. My affection or admiration for someone should not lead me to accept a claim without checking it.

Ezekiel 13:19 — Will you profane me among my people for handfuls of barley and for scraps of bread, putting to death those who should not die and keeping alive those who should not live, doing so by your lies to my people, who listen to your lies?”’

Comment 10: Ezekiel 13:19 mentions that those women lied for handfuls of barley and scraps of bread. For material gain, they profaned Jehovah and harmed the people. This makes me think about how dangerous it is to let economic convenience decide what I consider acceptable. Even if a gain seems small or necessary, it does not justify departing from the truth. My honesty and respect for Jehovah’s name are worth far more.

Ezekiel 13:20 — “Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord Jehovah says: ‘Here I am against your bands, O women, which you use to hunt down people as though they were birds, and I will rip them from your arms and release those whom you are hunting down like birds.

Comment 11: At Ezekiel 13:20, Jehovah compares deceived people to birds caught in a snare and announces that he will free them. I am moved that he not only condemns deception but also cares about those who suffer from it. In the ministry, I want to remember that way of viewing people. If someone is deeply attached to a false teaching, he needs patience and respectful help to examine the Bible, not to be made to feel foolish because of what he believes.

Ezekiel 13:22 — For you have disheartened the righteous one with your falsehood when I was not causing him distress, and you have strengthened the hands of the wicked one, so that he does not turn back from his bad way and stay alive.

Comment 12: Ezekiel 13:22 describes two effects of falsehood: it discouraged the righteous and strengthened the wicked to continue doing wrong. This contrast helps me think about the effect of my words. I do not want to burden with guilt someone who is trying to please Jehovah, nor minimize conduct that needs correction. When encouraging or advising someone, I should strive for my words to reflect Jehovah’s thinking, not my personal preferences.

Spiritual Gems From EZEKIEL 14

Ezekiel 14:3 — “Son of man, these men are determined to follow their disgusting idols, and they have set up a stumbling block that causes people to sin. He was not misled by appearances. This encourages me to examine my motives: I do not merely want to appear willing to listen to Jehovah; I want to be ready to change whatever he points out.

Ezekiel 14:4 — Now speak with them and tell them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord Jehovah says: “If an Israelite is determined to follow his disgusting idols and sets up a stumbling block causing people to sin and he then comes to inquire of a prophet, I, Jehovah, will answer him appropriately according to his many disgusting idols.

Comment 2: At Ezekiel 14:4, an Israelite consulted the prophet while remaining determined to follow his idolatrous practices. The consultation did not erase his disobedience. This teaches me that asking for Bible-based guidance must be accompanied by a desire to apply it. If I have already decided what I will do and am only looking for someone to agree with me, I am not really listening. Before asking for advice, I can ask myself whether I am willing to accept an answer different from the one I expected.

Ezekiel 14:5 — For I will cause terror in the hearts of the house of Israel because they have all withdrawn from me and have gone after their disgusting idols.”’

Comment 3: Ezekiel 14:5 directly links idolatry with turning away from Jehovah. It was not merely a matter of performing a wrong act; it damaged their relationship with him. This helps me view obedience as something personal, not simply a list of rules. When evaluating a custom or decision, I want to ask how it affects my friendship with Jehovah. The most important thing is not finding an excuse to do something, but remaining close to him.

Ezekiel 14:6 — “So tell the house of Israel, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord Jehovah says: “Come back and turn away from your disgusting idols and turn your faces away from all your detestable practices.

Comment 4: Ezekiel 14:6 shows that Jehovah invited his people to return, but also asked them to turn away from idols and abandon their detestable practices. Repentance had to lead to action. I am encouraged that Jehovah offered this opportunity to people who had turned away from him. It also reminds me that when I recognize a mistake, it is not enough to feel bad; I need to take concrete steps to leave it behind and again do what pleases him.

Ezekiel 14:7 — For if any Israelite or foreign resident living in Israel separates himself from me and is determined to follow his disgusting idols and sets up a stumbling block that causes people to sin and then comes to inquire of my prophet, I, Jehovah, I will personally answer him.

Comment 5: Ezekiel 14:7 includes both the Israelite and the foreign resident living in Israel. Neither could turn away from Jehovah, cling to idols, and expect his conduct to be overlooked. This highlights that a person’s background does not exempt him from obeying God. In the congregation, I want to avoid favoritism: affection, nationality, or how long I have known someone should not change the way I value Bible principles.

Ezekiel 14:8 — I will set my face against that man and make him a warning sign and a proverbial saying, and I will cut him off from my people; and you will have to know that I am Jehovah.”’

Comment 6: At Ezekiel 14:8, Jehovah said that anyone persisting in that course would become a warning to others. Bad examples can also teach us if we take them seriously. This verse encourages me to read accounts of disobedience without immediately thinking about someone else’s mistakes. It is more useful to ask what attitude I should avoid. Thus I can learn from the consequences others suffered without having to go through the same experience.

Ezekiel 14:10 — They will have to bear their guilt; the guilt of the inquirer will be the same as the guilt of the prophet,

Comment 7: Ezekiel 14:10 assigns guilt both to the prophet and to the one consulting him. In that context, going to someone else did not free the person who remained determined to practice idolatry from responsibility. This reminds me that I cannot justify a bad decision by saying that someone assured me it was all right. I am responsible for checking whether what I do agrees with Jehovah’s will. Seeking favorable opinions never replaces the need to listen to and obey his Word.

Ezekiel 14:11 — so that the house of Israel may stop wandering away from me and stop defiling themselves by all their transgressions. This helps me see that divine correction should not be viewed simply as punishment. It also emphasizes how much Jehovah cares about his relationship with his people. If I receive Bible-based counsel that is difficult to accept, I want to think about how it can help me correct my course and draw closer to him.

Ezekiel 14:13 — “Son of man, if a land sins against me by acting unfaithfully, I will stretch out my hand against it and destroy its food supply, and I will send famine upon it and cut offman and animal from it.”

Comment 9: Ezekiel 14:13 presents unfaithfulness to Jehovah as a serious matter, with consequences that could affect an entire land. This reminds me that disobedience does not always harm only the person practicing it. My decisions can also influence my family and the congregation. I do not want to think only about what I desire or whether I can avoid an immediate consequence, but about how my conduct affects others and my relationship with Jehovah.

Ezekiel 14:14 — “‘Even if these three men—Noah, Daniel, and Job—were within it, they would be able to save only themselves because of their righteousness,’ declares the Sovereign Lord Jehovah.”

Comment 10: At Ezekiel 14:14, Jehovah names Noah, Daniel, and Job and recognizes their righteousness. Although the context concerns an unfaithful land, he distinguishes those who faithfully serve him. This encourages me: Jehovah does not lose sight of each person’s conduct because of what the majority does. If those around me despise what is right, I can remain loyal, confident that he knows and values my effort.

Ezekiel 14:16 — As surely as I am alive,’ declares the Sovereign Lord Jehovah, ‘even if these three men were in it, they would save neither their sons nor their daughters; they would save only themselves, and the land would become desolate.’”

Comment 11: Ezekiel 14:16 indicates that in the judgment described, not even those righteous men could save their children by their own faithfulness. In addition to including them in spiritual activities, they can talk with them, listen to their questions, and help them understand why obeying God is worthwhile.

Ezekiel 14:23 — “‘They will comfort you when you see their ways and their deeds, and you will know that it was not without cause that I did what I had to do to it,’ declares the Sovereign Lord Jehovah.”

Comment 12: Ezekiel 14:23 assures us that when the conduct of the survivors was observed, it would be understood that Jehovah had reasons for acting against Jerusalem.
