When someone judges us without listening to us or remembers only our mistakes, we feel how painful injustice can be. So it comforts us to know that Jehovah never acts that way. His justice is not cold or separate from his love. Ezekiel 33 helps us understand this: Jehovah warns before acting, examines each person individually, and takes into account how each one responds to his warnings. These ways of acting give us confidence and teach us to treat others better.<\/p>
A warning given in time can enable someone to avoid danger. But for it to be useful, the person needs to receive it and decide how to respond. Jehovah did not leave the Israelites unaware of what would happen if they persisted in their bad course. He communicated his warnings to them through prophets who served as watchmen. It was not simply a matter of announcing a sentence but of warning them so that they could change course. Notice the assignment Ezekiel received. Let us read Ezekiel 33:7.<\/p>
Ezekiel 33:7<\/strong> \u2014 \u201cAs for you, son of man, I have appointed you as a watchman to the house of Israel; and when you hear a word from my mouth you must warn them from me.<\/em><\/p> Ezekiel was to convey what Jehovah communicated to him, not his own opinions. And those warnings did not come when it was already too late. He began to prophesy about six years before the Babylonian army destroyed Jerusalem. Moreover, he was not the first one to warn the people. More than a hundred years before that destruction, Jehovah had already begun sending prophets to fulfill that function. What patience he showed! The Israelites had repeated opportunities to listen, reflect on their conduct, and make the necessary changes.<\/p> Therefore, the lives that were lost could not be attributed to a lack of warnings on the part of Jehovah or his watchmen. His way of acting had been just and loving. How do we respond when we receive a warning based on the Bible? Instead of viewing it as an annoyance, we can recognize it as an opportunity to correct our course. We do well to ask ourselves whether we are listening with a willingness to change. However, although the warnings were directed to the people, did Jehovah judge all its members in the same way?<\/p> When many people behave badly, it can be easy to think that everyone around them is the same. Jehovah did not make that mistake with the Israelites. Although very many rejected Ezekiel\u2019s message, he did not consider the entire people to be a group of rebels without differences among them. He wanted to see how each one responded. This assures us that his judgment does not depend on a general impression of a group. In the following verse, we see that he distinguishes individual responsibilities. Let us read Ezekiel 33:8.<\/p> Ezekiel 33:8<\/strong> \u2014 When I say to someone wicked, \u2018Wicked one, you will surely die!\u2019 but you do not speak out to warn the wicked one to change his course, he will die as a wicked man because of his own error, but I will ask his blood back from you.<\/em><\/p> Notice that Jehovah speaks of a wicked person, someone who needed to change course. That person would answer for his own error. At the same time, Ezekiel had the responsibility to warn him and would be accountable for carrying out or failing to carry out his assignment. Jehovah distinguished what each one was responsible for doing. He did not confuse the responsibility of the messenger with that of the one who received the message. Thus, this verse helps us see that his justice is precise: He takes individual conduct into account and does not treat people as though they were interchangeable.<\/p> What happened in Jerusalem confirms that impartiality. Among those who survived were the Rechabites, Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, Jeremiah, and Baruch. Before the destruction, they had demonstrated that they rejected wickedness and held firmly to pure worship. Jehovah did not overlook them because they lived among disobedient people. This also guides us in our ministry: a person\u2019s origin, appearance, social position, or past does not tell us how he or she will respond to the message. Each person deserves our attention. And that individual attention leads to another question: What happens when someone changes his conduct?<\/p> Jehovah\u2019s justice avoids two extremes. It does not allow good actions in the past to serve as an excuse for doing what is wrong now. But neither does it condemn a person forever for mistakes he has repented of. What matters is how he responds to the warnings and what course he follows. Let us listen to the two situations that Jehovah presents at Ezekiel 33:13-16.<\/p> Ezekiel 33:13-16<\/strong> \u2014 When I say to the righteous one: \u201cYou will surely keep living,\u201d and he trusts in his own righteousness and does what is wrong, none of his righteous acts will be remembered, but he will die for the wrong that he has done. \u201c\u2018And when I say to the wicked one: \u201cYou will surely die,\u201d and he turns away from his sin and does what is just and righteous, and the wicked one returns what was taken in pledge and pays back what was taken by robbery, and he walks in the statutes of life by not doing what is wrong, he will surely keep living. He will not die. None of the sins he committed will be held against him. For doing what is just and righteous, he will surely keep living.\u2019<\/em><\/p> The first situation contains a warning for those of us who have been striving to obey Jehovah for a long time. Having done good things does not give us permission to do wrong. Years of faithful service are not a reserve that can offset wrong conduct that we now refuse to abandon. For example, it would not be reasonable to justify a dishonest practice by thinking that we participate extensively in the ministry. Jehovah invites us to continue being humble and obedient. The question is not only what we have done before but how we are acting now.<\/p> The second situation offers very comforting hope. A person who has done wrong can abandon his sin and do what is just. The passage mentions specific actions, such as returning what was stolen. Therefore, it does not speak of repentance that remains merely words but of a change demonstrated by actions. When someone truly repents, Jehovah does not continue to reproach him for sins he has left behind. His justice does not prevent forgiveness; it recognizes the change and allows the person to move forward.<\/p> Before we finish, let us ask ourselves: What do I learn from Jehovah\u2019s example? Perhaps I need to listen more carefully to his warnings, approach someone in the ministry without prejudice, or stop continually remembering the mistakes of a repentant person. I may also need to accept that Jehovah is willing to forgive me. If my actions demonstrate sincere repentance, I should not conclude that my sins are too great for him to forgive. These lessons complement one another: They help us take our conduct seriously without losing confidence in Jehovah\u2019s love.<\/p> Jehovah is always just. He demonstrates this by giving warnings in advance, judging individuals, and distinguishing between someone who persists in wrongdoing and someone who repents. We can have complete confidence in him. May that confidence move us to listen to his warnings, remain humble, and view others without prejudice. And if we are struggling with feelings of guilt despite having repented, let us remember that Jehovah is not a God of vengeance but a God of love.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
