Although he was young, he did not think that he had to preserve them simply because they had come from earlier generations. He listened to Jehovah’s prophets and acted against idolatry and temple prostitution. This shows that his courage did not consist only in facing enemies in battle. He was also willing to make difficult changes within his own country in order to please Jehovah.

Comment 2: A particularly clear demonstration of his courage was what he did with his grandmother Maacah. She held the important position of queen mother and had made an obscene idol. Asa removed her from that position and destroyed the idol. He did not allow family ties to lead him to tolerate something that Jehovah condemned. The account emphasizes that he put loyalty to God above loyalty to his family. At times, standing up for what is right requires precisely that kind of courage.

Comment 3: He was also courageous when he faced the Ethiopian army of a million soldiers. The first thing he did was pray to Jehovah with all his heart. He acknowledged that they needed Jehovah’s help and then went into battle with his men. Thus, his courage was not based on believing that he had enough soldiers or better resources. It was based on his trust in Jehovah. Asa understood that the enemy’s numerical superiority did not limit what God could do for his people.

1. What was the “sacred pole,” and how does archaeology show that unfaithful Israelites worshipped the goddess represented by this pole? (1 Ki. 15:12, 13; w08 6/1 p. 10 pars. 1-5). A

Comment 1: The sacred poles were apparently wooden representations of Asherah, a Canaanite fertility goddess. They were part of the so-called high places, where there were also altars, incense stands, and sacred stone pillars. Therefore, they were not mere decorations or objects without religious meaning. They were connected with false worship. Knowing what they represented helps us understand why Asa acted so firmly against the idol his grandmother had made.

Comment 2: An important archaeological proof is the hundreds of terracotta figurines found in Jerusalem and Judah, especially among the ruins of private homes. Many depict female figures with exaggerated features. Experts associate them with Astarte and Asherah, fertility goddesses, and believe that they were used as talismans to promote conception and childbirth. These finds indicate that such practices were not limited to public sanctuaries but had also entered family life.

Comment 3: In addition to the figurines, inscriptions have been found that associate the name of Jehovah with Asherah. The material explains that some high places were probably considered dedicated to Jehovah, even though mixed worship incorporating pagan elements was practiced there. This helps us understand the seriousness of the problem: some Israelites were not keeping the two forms of worship separate. They were trying to associate the true God with a fertility goddess, something incompatible with the pure worship he deserved.

🔒
Comment 4 · PremiumThis answer is available to Premium subscribers.
View plans

🔒
Comment 5 · PremiumThis answer is available to Premium subscribers.
View plans

🔒
Comment 6 · PremiumThis answer is available to Premium subscribers.
View plans

2. Apparently, who was the son of the visionary Hanani, and how did he imitate his father’s courageous example? (it “Hanani” No. 2).

Comment 1: Apparently, Hanani was the father of the prophet Jehu. Both had the courage to deliver corrective messages to kings. Hanani reproved Asa for relying on the king of Syria instead of trusting in Jehovah. Jehu, for his part, reproved Baasha, king of Israel, and Jehoshaphat, king of Judah. The similarity is that neither allowed the position of the recipient to prevent him from communicating the message Jehovah wanted that person to receive.

Comment 2: Hanani’s courage can be appreciated by considering Asa’s reaction. The king was so offended by the correction that he sent him to prison. Hanani was not pointing out a minor matter: he reminded Asa that he had trusted in a human ruler and not in Jehovah. This episode helps us understand what kind of example Jehu imitated. Speaking faithfully could bring painful consequences, but the prophet’s duty was to deliver God’s message.

Comment 3: Jehu showed courage by announcing Jehovah’s judgment against Baasha and his house. According to the account in First Kings, Baasha had followed a bad course and had led the people of Israel into sin. Jehu had to deliver a very serious message to him, not something the king wanted to hear. In this way he imitated Hanani’s courage: he gave priority to faithfulness to Jehovah over the approval of a person occupying a powerful position.

🔒
Comment 4 · PremiumThis answer is available to Premium subscribers.
View plans

3. Although Asa made mistakes, why does the Bible say that he “served Jehovah with a complete heart”? (1 Ki. 15:14; w17.03 p. 19 pars. 5, 6).

1 Kings 15:14 — But the high places were not removed. Nevertheless, Asa’s heart was complete with Jehovah all his life.

Comment 1: Serving with a complete heart did not mean that Asa was perfect. The account acknowledges his mistakes, but it also shows his love for Jehovah and his efforts to promote true worship. Jehovah did not overlook his faults; nevertheless, when evaluating his life, He recognized his devotion. This helps us distinguish between having a complete heart and never making a mistake.

Comment 2: Asa’s decisions demonstrated that his desire to please Jehovah was genuine. He removed idols, expelled the male temple prostitutes, and took measures even against his own grandmother. He did not merely say that he supported true worship; he acted to cleanse it of practices that Jehovah rejected. Those decisions help us understand the favorable evaluation he received. Despite his later mistakes, he had shown by his actions that his relationship with Jehovah was central in his life.

Comment 3: Another aspect is that Asa did more than eliminate what was bad. He also encouraged the people to search for Jehovah and to obey his Law and commandments. His concern was that people practice true worship, not merely that certain religious objects disappear. That attitude reveals something about his heart. He wanted Jehovah to occupy the place that belonged to him in the life of the nation. Thus, his reforms were a positive expression of devotion as well as a rejection of idolatry.

🔒
Comment 4 · PremiumThis answer is available to Premium subscribers.
View plans

🔒
Comment 5 · PremiumThis answer is available to Premium subscribers.
View plans

4. If the Israelites did not normally cremate the dead, why does the Bible say that “they made a great funeral burning for him”? (2 Chron. 16:14; w05 12/1 p. 20 par. 5).

Comment 1: The explanation is that the fire was made to burn spices, not to cremate Asa’s body. The Watchtower directly clarifies this difference. Therefore, the mention of a great fire does not indicate that the custom of burying the dead had been changed. It describes something done in connection with the funeral, not what was done with the body.

2 Chronicles 16:14 — So they buried him in the grand burial place that he had excavated for himself in the City of David, and they laid him on a bier that had been filled with balsam oil and different sorts of ingredients mixed into a specially made ointment. Further, they made an extraordinarily great funeral burning for him.

Comment 2: The verse itself provides a decisive detail: Asa was buried in the burial place that had been prepared in the City of David. It also describes the bier and the aromatic preparations covering it. Thus, the context distinguishes the king’s burial from the fire made during the funeral. There is no contradiction between the two details; they refer to different actions.

Comment 3: This case reminds me of the importance of reading an expression in its context. If we focused only on the fire, we could reach a wrong conclusion. But when we consider the burial mentioned in the same verse and the clarification about burning spices, the meaning becomes clear. Careful reading prevents us from attributing to the account something it does not say.

Azariah’s words encouraged Asa to restore pure worship. How can we encourage others with our words? B

Comment 1: We can use our words to strengthen others’ confidence in Jehovah, not simply to tell them to try harder. Asa gained courage when he listened to God’s prophets. Similarly, when someone is facing a difficult decision, we can kindly remind that person why it is worthwhile to please Jehovah. A comment based on the Bible can help him see that he is not alone. The aim is to encourage him to do what is right, not to add more pressure.

Comment 2: The pictures show a brother observing a teenager who seems to have little interest in the meeting. He then approaches him, and they have a pleasant conversation. That scene teaches me not to settle for a first impression or merely point out what someone is doing wrong. We can take a genuine interest in the person, listen to him, and speak kindly. In this way, our words can open an opportunity to encourage him instead of making him feel judged or rejected.

Comment 3: In the last picture, the teenager is commenting and the brother is smiling. This reminds us how valuable it is to rejoice over the efforts of others and acknowledge them. At times, a young person or someone who is going through difficulties needs to hear that his effort has not gone unnoticed. We can sincerely and specifically commend him, without comparing him with anyone. Words of encouragement do not have to be long or spectacular; what matters is that they convey genuine interest and help him continue drawing closer to Jehovah.

Asa asked Jehovah for help to defeat a huge army. But later, when he faced a smaller army, he asked men for help. What does this teach us about the importance of trusting in Jehovah in everything we do? (Prov. 3:5, 6).

Proverbs 3:5-6 — Trust in Jehovah with all your heart, And do not rely on your own understanding. In all your ways take notice of him, And he will make your paths straight.

Comment 1: The principle in Proverbs covers all our decisions, not just situations that seem impossible to solve. Asa sought Jehovah when faced with the enormous Ethiopian army, but later turned to the king of Syria when faced with another threat. This warns us that we may recognize our need for God in a crisis and forget it when we think we have a solution within reach. Trusting in Jehovah means taking him into account also in matters that seem smaller or easier to handle.

Comment 2: A past experience of faith does not guarantee that we will always act with faith. Asa had seen how Jehovah helped him, but later stopped relying on him at important moments. Therefore, we need to keep our trust alive through prayer and by remembering the help we have already received. It is not enough to think that we were courageous in the past or that we have served Jehovah for many years. Each new decision gives us an opportunity to show that we continue depending on him.

Comment 3: We can also learn from what happened when Asa became sick. The chapter does not present the problem as his going to physicians; rather, it emphasizes that he did not ask Jehovah for help. This helps us maintain balance. Seeking appropriate human help does not have to replace our trust in God. Even when we receive advice or assistance, we can continue praying, seeking his guidance, and acknowledging that we need his support. The issue is not to leave Jehovah out of our decisions.

In what ways can you imitate Asa’s courageous example?

Comment 1: I can imitate Asa by putting my loyalty to Jehovah above the desire to please other people, even family members. He did not tolerate Maacah’s idolatry because of her position or because she was his grandmother. In my case, this does not mean treating my family harshly, but respectfully maintaining a decision based on what Jehovah approves. His example reminds me that loving our relatives does not require us to participate in practices that displease God.

Comment 2: Another way is to act when I see that I need to change something to please Jehovah. Asa did not settle for acknowledging that idolatry was wrong; he took measures to eliminate it. I can ask myself whether I am keeping some custom or practice simply because it has always been part of my life. If I understand that it does not agree with what Jehovah asks, I need the courage to abandon it. Asa’s example encourages me to turn what I learn into concrete decisions, not merely good intentions.

Comment 3: I want to imitate the courage Asa showed when he prayed before facing the Ethiopian army. When a difficulty seems too great, I can begin by speaking to Jehovah instead of allowing fear to make my decisions. Then I need to act in harmony with his guidance. I can also remember the occasions when he has already helped me. As the chapter emphasizes, we should not forget what Jehovah has done for us; remembering it can give us strength to face the next trial.

What does this account teach me about Jehovah?

Comment 1: It teaches me that Jehovah’s power does not depend on human resources. The Ethiopian army had a million soldiers, but that superiority did not prevent Jehovah from helping Asa and Judah. Asa understood that God could assist both the strong and the weak. This strengthens my confidence when I see my own limitations. The account does not mean that we will never have difficulties, but it does help us remember that no circumstance makes Jehovah unable to help those who trust in him.

Comment 2: I am impressed by Jehovah’s patience. The Bible does not hide Asa’s serious mistakes, but neither does it erase the good he did or his devotion. The chapter emphasizes that Jehovah loves those who love him. This helps me view him as a Father who does not reduce a person’s entire life to his failures. His way of evaluating Asa encourages me to keep striving to please him, without thinking that imperfection makes my efforts to serve him wholeheartedly useless.

Comment 3: The account also teaches that Jehovah is not indifferent when his servants take a wrong course. He sent Hanani to correct Asa when Asa sought Syria’s support instead of Jehovah’s. Thus, Jehovah’s patience does not mean that he approves of every decision. He points out what is wrong. For me, this is a reminder that I must humbly accept correction and not imitate Asa’s angry reaction when he received that message.

How is this account related to Jehovah’s purpose and the main theme of the Bible?

Comment 1: One clear connection is the importance of Jehovah’s name. When Asa prayed before the battle, he was not focused only on his own survival or on his prestige as king. He acknowledged that they were facing the enemy in the name of his God. The victory showed that Jehovah could defend his people. This detail helps us look beyond a battle between armies and focus on what the account teaches about Jehovah’s name and power.

Comment 2: The chapter emphasizes that Jehovah is the Sovereign of the universe. The enormous number of enemy soldiers could not limit his power. Asa acted correctly when he recognized that he needed to depend on Jehovah, and he was wrong when he sought security while setting that trust aside. This relates to a fundamental issue: recognizing Jehovah’s authority and trusting in the way he directs his servants. The account invites us to demonstrate that trust by our decisions, not just by our words.

Comment 3: It is also related to the worship that belongs to Jehovah. Asa removed idols, promoted obedience to the Law, and helped the people express their loyalty to God. Even people from the northern kingdom moved to Judah to worship him at the temple in Jerusalem. Thus, the focus of the account is not merely a king’s military ability. It is the importance of people recognizing Jehovah as their God and giving him worship that is clean from idolatry.

What would I like to ask Asa when he is resurrected?

Comment 1: I would like to ask him how he experienced that moment when he saw the enormous Ethiopian army and began to pray. The account lets us know his request, but it would be very interesting to hear him explain how he experienced Jehovah’s help. I would also ask him what memories he retained of that victory. We cannot anticipate his answers, but thinking about these questions helps me focus on what is most important about the episode: the trust he showed by recognizing that he needed Jehovah before entering the battle.

Comment 2: I would ask him about his decision to remove Maacah from her position as queen mother. We know what he did, but I would like to hear how he handled a situation involving both his family and his loyalty to Jehovah. I would also ask how the prophets’ words helped him act courageously. We do not know what details he would tell us, but his decision already leaves us with a very clear lesson: family ties should not lead us to put obedience to God in second place.

Comment 3: I would like to ask him what he would say to those who are learning both from his successes and from his mistakes. In particular, I would want to hear his reflections on trusting in Jehovah and on how to receive correction. We do not know what he would answer, and there is no need to imagine a response. The account we have already encourages me to examine my own attitude: whether I continue seeking Jehovah when my circumstances change and whether I humbly accept the help he gives me through others.

Answers and comments for the Congregation Bible Study for the week of March 1-7, 2027, based on wcg chap.
