Briefly review Enjoy Life Forever!, lesson 12, point 3.

In this two-minute talk by the meeting chairman, we briefly review Enjoy Life Forever!, lesson 12, “Frankness,” point 3: “Help your student set and reach goals.” Let us consider how to apply this advice when conducting a Bible study.

When we help someone learn from the Bible, we want that person to be able to put into practice what he or she is studying. But the person may not know where to begin. It is not enough to point out that he or she needs to make progress; we can help the person identify a specific step that is within reach.

A goal needs a plan. Saying that we want to improve is a good start, but it is helpful to think about what we will do to achieve it. The Bible highlights the importance of planning and working hard instead of acting hastily. Let us note what Proverbs 21:5 says.

Proverbs 21:5 — The plans of the diligent surely lead to success, But all who are hasty surely head for poverty.

This principle can guide us when helping a student. Instead of suggesting many changes at once, we could ask what he or she would like to put into practice from what has been learned. Listening to the answer will help us know what the student understands, what he or she wants to do, and what difficulty the student is facing.

For example, if the student wants to read the Bible more regularly, we could help him or her choose a suitable time and a portion that can be read. In this way, a general intention becomes a specific step. The idea is not to decide for the student but to help the person get organized.

Afterward, let us show interest in how things went. If the student did not reach the goal, before insisting, it is wise to listen to what happened. Perhaps the plan needs to be adjusted. If the student took a step forward, we can sincerely acknowledge that effort and encourage the person to continue.

The lesson’s picture shows Jesus speaking kindly to a man. Let us keep that manner in mind when offering help. Being frank about what the student needs to improve does not require speaking harshly or turning every conversation into a review of the student’s mistakes.

As we prepare for the next study, let us think of a useful goal for that student and how to help him or her reach it. This is not merely a matter of telling the student where to go but of patiently accompanying the person while taking the next steps.

Making Disciples

Assignment details

Assignment: Making Disciples
Duration: 2 min
Lesson and point: Lesson 12 · Frankness · point 3
Teaching objective: Help your student set and reach goals.
Setting: In his home dining room, a student finishes the lesson with the publisher conducting his Bible study and mentions that his sister will visit him on Saturday
Associated Bible text: Matthew 28:19 — Go, therefore, and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit,
Official material: lff lesson 22 summary, review, and “Try This.” Demonstrate what not to do when applying Enjoy Life Forever!, lesson 12, point 3.

Publisher: Do you have a moment for the review, or do you have to leave now?

Householder: Yes, we can finish. Let us move to the second question: How can you do this respectfully?

Householder: By listening and not insisting if they do not want to talk.
