Ahaz had promoted false worship, but Hezekiah, only 25 years old, began making major changes. He reopened and repaired the temple, removed the idols, and restored the work of the priests and Levites. He did not merely disapprove of what was wrong; he acted to correct it. His example teaches us that being courageous also means making decisions that please Jehovah, even when they are very different from the decisions made by our family.

Comment 2: He also showed courage by defending pure worship against practices that had become established among the Israelites. For example, he crushed the copper serpent because the people were worshipping it. Although that object had a long history, this did not justify giving it worship that belonged only to Jehovah. He also invited the inhabitants of the ten-tribe kingdom to celebrate the Passover. Some mocked the messengers, but many accepted the invitation. He did not allow ridicule to prevent him from doing something good for others.

Comment 3: When faced with the Assyrian threat, Hezekiah did not let intimidation paralyze him. He took steps to protect Jerusalem and encouraged the people to trust in Jehovah’s power. When he received Sennacherib’s threatening letters, he presented them before Jehovah at the temple. This shows that his courage did not consist in thinking that he could solve everything himself. He recognized that he needed help and turned to the One who could give it. We too can show courage when facing a problem by seeking Jehovah’s support instead of drawing away from him.

1. What archaeological discoveries support what the Bible says about Hezekiah? (w11 5/1 p. 15 pars. 1-3). A

Comment 1: Ancient clay seal impressions, called bullae, have been found containing the names of Bible characters. Among them are some believed to have been made with the personal seals of Ahaz and Hezekiah. One identifies Hezekiah as the son of Ahaz and king of Judah. What is interesting is that it does not simply contain a name resembling that of a Bible character. It also gives his relationship and position, details that agree with the identity of Hezekiah presented in the Bible.

Comment 2: To appreciate these discoveries, it helps to know how bullae were used. Official documents were rolled up, tied with a cord, and sealed with moist clay. A seal was pressed into the clay and could include the owner’s name, his title, and his father’s name. Thus, these small impressions have historical value: they preserve information used to authenticate documents. In Hezekiah’s case, that information agrees with details found in the Bible account.

2 Kings 16:1,20 — In the 17th year of Pekah the son of Remaliah, Ahaz the son of King Jotham of Judah became king. Then Ahaz was laid to rest with his forefathers and was buried with his forefathers in the City of David; and his son Hezekiah became king in his place.

Comment 3: This passage identifies Ahaz as the son of Jotham and explains that Hezekiah, the son of Ahaz, succeeded him as king. Those same family connections appear in the seal impressions mentioned in the research. One links Ahaz with Jotham and the other links Hezekiah with Ahaz. Thus, the discoveries support specific details of the Bible record. I find it significant that such small objects preserved names and family relationships that agree with what we read in the Bible.

🔒
Comment 4 · PremiumThis answer is available to Premium subscribers.
View plans

2. How was Isaiah’s prophecy about “a poisonous snake and a flying fiery snake” fulfilled in Hezekiah? (Isa. 14:28, 29; ip-1 pp. 190-191 pars. 4-6).

Isaiah 14:28-29 — In the year that King Ahaz died, this pronouncement was made: “Do not rejoice, Philistia, any of you, Just because the staff of the one striking you has been broken. For from the root of the serpent will come a poisonous snake, And its offspring will be a flying fiery snake.

Comment 1: The prophecy warned the Philistines not to rejoice, thinking that they would no longer have a strong adversary in Judah. Hezekiah, a descendant of Uzziah, proved to be that adversary. The comparison to a poisonous, swift-moving snake highlights the speed and effectiveness of his attacks. Therefore, it does not describe a bad quality in Hezekiah but the effect he would have on Judah’s enemies. The Philistines discovered that the favorable situation they had enjoyed during Ahaz’s reign would not continue.

Comment 2: Uzziah’s background helps us understand the illustration. That king had successfully fought the Philistines and had contained the threat they posed. To them, he had been like a snake that could harm them. Hezekiah belonged to the same family line, so the prophecy presents him as coming from that root. This was not an isolated image: it connected what the Philistines had experienced under Uzziah with what would happen to them later under Hezekiah’s rule.

Comment 3: During Ahaz’s reign, the Philistines had invaded Judah and occupied several cities. So they may have thought that they would continue taking advantage of the kingdom’s weakness. But when Hezekiah came to the throne, the situation changed. Isaiah’s prophecy warned them not to mistake their recent victories for permanent security. This context helps us appreciate its fulfillment: Hezekiah did not simply preserve the situation he had inherited from his father; he became a formidable enemy to the Philistines.

🔒
Comment 4 · PremiumThis answer is available to Premium subscribers.
View plans

🔒
Comment 5 · PremiumThis answer is available to Premium subscribers.
View plans

3. In an account written by Sennacherib that was found in Nineveh, certain details are given but others are omitted. Why is this interesting? (g 12/10 p. 27 pars. 3-5). B

Comment 1: This is interesting because Sennacherib’s account confirms some events recorded in the Bible, but presents the campaign in a way that is very favorable to him. On the prism found in Nineveh, he claims the conquest of 46 fortified cities and describes Hezekiah as confined in Jerusalem. However, he does not claim to have conquered the city. That difference is important: having a king surrounded is not the same as defeating him and taking his capital. His own words leave out that supposed victory.

Comment 2: The tribute provides another interesting detail. Both the Bible record and the Assyrian account mention that Hezekiah gave wealth to Sennacherib, and both indicate 30 talents of gold. But whereas the Bible speaks of 300 talents of silver, Sennacherib claims to have received 800. The research indicates that he exaggerated that amount. This helps us read his account carefully: it contains historical information, but it also reflects the king’s desire to magnify his achievements. Not every detail in an inscription should be accepted without examination.

2 Kings 19:35-36 — On that very night the angel of Jehovah went out and struck down 185,000 men in the camp of the Assyrians. When people rose up early in the morning, they saw all the dead bodies. So King Sennacherib of Assyria departed and returned to Nineveh and stayed there.

Comment 3: The Bible explains the outcome that Sennacherib omitted: an angel of Jehovah killed 185,000 Assyrian soldiers, and the king returned to Nineveh. This explains why he could not claim to have conquered Jerusalem. The contrast between the two accounts is very revealing. Sennacherib emphasized his earlier victories and the tribute he received, whereas the Bible record explains why the city did not fall. The deliverance was not due to Hezekiah’s having a superior army, but to Jehovah’s intervention.

🔒
Comment 4 · PremiumThis answer is available to Premium subscribers.
View plans

🔒
Comment 5 · PremiumThis answer is available to Premium subscribers.
View plans

4. In 2003, scientists published the results of research into whether Hezekiah’s aqueduct, or tunnel, was really built during that king’s reign. What conclusion did they reach? (w09 5/1 p. 27 pars. 3-5).

Comment 1: They concluded that the tunnel was built in Hezekiah’s time, around 700 B.C.E. This agreed with the Bible record and not with the proposal that it had been built 500 years later. The research published in 2003 provided evidence to clarify that difference. Interestingly, this was not simply a matter of repeating a traditional opinion: materials connected with the construction were analyzed and the results were compared with other methods of determining the tunnel’s age.

Comment 2: The scientists used carbon-14 to analyze organic material found in the tunnel walls. They also applied the uranium-thorium method to date stalactites. According to the explanation presented, the results placed the construction in Hezekiah’s time. What is valuable is that different materials were studied by means of different procedures. Thus, the conclusion did not depend solely on interpreting an inscription; it also had physical evidence supporting the age attributed to the tunnel.

Comment 3: The inscription found inside the tunnel described the final stages of its construction. On the basis of the form of its letters, most experts had already placed it in Hezekiah’s time. Later, the scientific analyses agreed with that dating and with the historical record. The agreement among those three types of evidence is what makes the result especially strong.

🔒
Comment 4 · PremiumThis answer is available to Premium subscribers.
View plans

How can Hezekiah’s example encourage a Christian if his father or mother does not worship Jehovah?

Comment 1: Hezekiah’s example shows that our parents’ decisions do not have to determine our relationship with Jehovah. His father was one of Judah’s worst kings, but Hezekiah became one of its best. This does not mean that his childhood was easy or that what happened in his family was unimportant. It means that he could choose a different path. A Christian who does not have the spiritual support of his parents can be encouraged: he too can cultivate a personal friendship with Jehovah.

Comment 2: Hezekiah did not merely avoid his father’s worst actions. He took positive steps to worship Jehovah: he restored the temple and promoted pure worship. This can encourage a Christian to think not only about what to reject but also about what he can do to strengthen his faith. Even if not everyone at home shares his beliefs, he can continue learning about Jehovah and taking part in true worship. His spiritual progress does not have to be halted by the decisions of others.

Comment 3: The picture shows a young man leaving with his study book while his family celebrates a birthday. It makes us think about the determination that may be required to act in harmony with what one has learned from Jehovah. Hezekiah’s example encourages us to maintain that decision without copying practices that displease God. At the same time, we can act respectfully toward our family. Being firm in our worship does not require treating those who do not share our faith badly; it requires knowing clearly whom we want to please.

What was Hezekiah’s main concern when Jerusalem was in danger? (2 Ki. 19:15-19). In what situations could we imitate him?

2 Kings 19:15-19 — And Hezekiah began to pray before Jehovah and say: “O Jehovah the God of Israel, sitting enthroned above the cherubs, you alone are the true God of all the kingdoms of the earth. You made the heavens and the earth. Incline your ear, O Jehovah, and hear! Open your eyes, O Jehovah, and see! Hear the words that Sennacherib has sent to taunt the living God. It is a fact, O Jehovah, that the kings of Assyria have devastated the nations and their lands. And they have thrown their gods into the fire, because they were not gods but the work of human hands, wood and stone. That is why they could destroy them. But now, O Jehovah our God, please save us out of his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone are God, O Jehovah.”

Comment 1: Hezekiah’s main concern was that Jehovah be recognized as the only true God. Of course, he asked him to save them, but his prayer was not focused only on survival. He was concerned about the words with which Sennacherib had challenged Jehovah and wanted all the kingdoms to know the truth about Him. We can imitate that attitude when praying about a problem: in addition to asking for relief, we can ask for help to react in a way that honors Jehovah and does not bring reproach on his name.

Comment 2: We might imitate him when someone mocks our faith or speaks disrespectfully of Jehovah. In such circumstances, it is easy to focus on how offended we feel or on proving that we are right. But Hezekiah helps us look beyond our pride. What matters is that our response honors Jehovah. Rather than reacting aggressively, we can pray and try to explain our beliefs calmly. In this way we show that Jehovah’s name matters more to us than winning an argument.

Comment 3: We can also imitate him when circumstances seem to confirm the mockery of someone who does not trust in Jehovah. Hezekiah acknowledged that the Assyrians had destroyed many nations, but he did not accept that this proved they could defeat the true God. We too do not need to deny that a problem is serious. We can acknowledge reality and at the same time maintain our trust in Jehovah. In prayer we can tell him both what concerns us and our desire to remain faithful, without allowing pressure to weaken our loyalty.

In what ways can you copy Hezekiah’s example of courage?

Comment 1: I can imitate him by acting decisively when I discover that something in my life is not in harmony with pure worship. Hezekiah did not keep the idols because of habit or because they were ancient. He even destroyed the copper serpent when it became an object of worship. This moves me to examine my own practices without justifying something wrong merely because it has always been done in my family. Christian courage includes being willing to change and to put what Jehovah approves above attachment to a tradition.

Comment 2: Another way to imitate him is to encourage others when all of us are going through a difficult situation. Hezekiah was also under threat, but he reminded the people that Jehovah was more powerful than the Assyrian army. He did not wait for the danger to disappear before strengthening others. I can do something similar: instead of repeating only everything that worries us, I can speak about the reasons we have to trust in Jehovah. A faith-filled comment can help someone else face his situation with greater courage.

Comment 3: I also want to imitate his humility when he received correction. After his great successes, Hezekiah became arrogant, but he acknowledged his error when Jehovah corrected him. This reminds me that courage does not consist only in resisting outside pressure. Sometimes it takes courage to admit that we are wrong. If I receive counsel, I can avoid becoming defensive and think about what I need to change. Good results in the past do not eliminate the need to keep listening and accepting help.

What does this account teach me about Jehovah?

Comment 1: It teaches me that Jehovah’s power is far above human power. The Assyrian army had conquered many cities and seemed unstoppable, but Jehovah needed only to send one angel to end that threat. Jerusalem’s security did not depend on its defenders matching the enemy’s forces. This helps me not to measure what Jehovah can do by my own limitations. Even if a difficulty is too much for me, it is never beyond his ability to act.

Comment 2: I also see that Jehovah listens to his servants and is interested in their suffering. Hezekiah begged for help when he was seriously ill, and Jehovah healed him and granted him 15 more years of life. Later he answered Hezekiah’s plea concerning Sennacherib’s threats. We should not conclude that he will always solve our problems in the same way, but we can approach him with confidence. The account presents a powerful God who is not indifferent to the concerns of those who seek him.

Comment 3: The account teaches me that Jehovah keeps his word. Through Isaiah, he assured Hezekiah that Sennacherib would not enter Jerusalem and that his men would not shoot an arrow against it. This was very different from what the military situation seemed to indicate, but it happened just as Jehovah had announced. For me, the lesson is that the appearance of circumstances does not make his word less trustworthy. I can continue trusting him even when I do not yet see how a troubling situation will be resolved.

How does this account relate to Jehovah’s purpose and the main theme of the Bible?

Comment 1: One important connection has to do with Jehovah’s name. Sennacherib challenged him as though he were equal to gods made by human hands. Hezekiah, on the other hand, asked that the deliverance make clear who the only true God was. Thus, this was not merely a conflict between two kings. The honor of Jehovah’s name was at stake. The outcome showed that the Assyrian king’s arrogant claims were false and that Jehovah could defend his name against those who despised it.

Comment 2: The chapter also highlights the importance of David’s line. When Hezekiah became seriously ill, he did not yet have a son to inherit the throne, so that line was in danger. Jehovah healed him, and afterward Hezekiah had a son. This detail helps us view the account in a broader setting: not only the life of one man was at stake, but also the continuation of David’s royal line. Neither illness nor the Assyrian threat prevented that line from continuing.

Comment 3: Hezekiah’s prayer recognizes Jehovah as Creator and as the true God of all the kingdoms of the earth. This connects the account with the theme of his sovereignty: no human ruler can place himself above him. Sennacherib had a powerful army, but he could not impose his will against what Jehovah had decided. The account encourages us to recognize Jehovah’s authority and trust that humans, no matter how powerful they may seem, cannot thwart his purpose.

What would I like to ask Hezekiah when he is resurrected?

Comment 1: I would like to ask him what helped him love Jehovah while growing up in Ahaz’s household. We know that he rejected his father’s bad example, but it would be very interesting to hear how he developed his own trust in Jehovah. I would also ask him what helped him maintain that decision when he became king. His answer could teach us much about cultivating firm convictions in a difficult environment and turning those convictions into actions that promote pure worship.

Comment 2: I would ask him how he felt when he brought Sennacherib’s letters to the temple and presented the matter to Jehovah. The account lets us know his prayer, but I would like to hear from him how he faced those hours of intense pressure. I would also ask him how he received the message Jehovah sent through Isaiah. We do not need to imagine his answers now; what we do know is that he sought help from Jehovah. It would be very encouraging to hear personally how he experienced Jehovah’s support.

Comment 3: I would like to ask him what he learned from the occasion when he became arrogant and later accepted Jehovah’s correction. He had experienced an extraordinary deliverance and recovered his health, but he still had to correct his attitude. I would ask what advice he would give someone who is receiving praise or enjoying good results. That conversation could help us value humility even more and remember that, after overcoming a great trial, we still need to hold fast to Jehovah.

Answers and comments for the Congregation Bible Study for the week of April 19-25, 2027, based on wcg chap.
