Baptizing them.”

1. How do we know that baptism is a fundamental teaching of the Bible?

Answer 1:

We know this because from the very beginning of the Christian congregation, great importance was given to it. At Pentecost in the year 33, Peter spoke clearly about baptism, and thousands of people took that step. That shows that it was not a secondary detail, but a basic and central teaching.

Answer 2:

In addition, Paul included teachings about baptisms among the basic teachings about the Christ. In other words, we are not talking about something optional or a minor matter. It is part of the foundation of Christian faith and, for that reason, all of us need to understand it well.

Answer 3:

So baptism is not simply a beautiful ceremony or a religious tradition. It is connected with our dedication to Jehovah, with our salvation, and with the new life we begin to live. That is why it occupies such an important place in the Bible.

2. Why is it so important that we understand the teaching of baptism well?

Answer 1:

Because strong faith needs a solid foundation. Just as a sturdy house depends on a good base, we need to understand the fundamental teachings of the Bible well. And baptism is one of those teachings that we should not understand only superficially.

Answer 2:

If we understand it well, we will not view baptism as a mere outward act. We will understand what it symbolizes, what it means for our life, and why it is such a serious step before Jehovah. That helps us value it much more and prepare better.

Answer 3:

Also, understanding baptism well gives us clarity and balance. It helps us answer important questions, such as what it represents, how it should be performed, and what it means to be baptized in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the holy spirit. All of that greatly strengthens our conviction.

3. What do we demonstrate when we get baptized?

Answer 1:

We publicly demonstrate that we have accepted the truth about Jehovah and about Jesus Christ. Baptism is not just a passing emotion, but the visible expression that we truly believe what the Bible teaches and want to live in harmony with it.

Answer 2:

We also demonstrate that we have repented and that we have already begun to make changes in our life. That is, baptism does not mark the beginning of the change, but confirms that we are already leaving behind a way of life that did not please Jehovah.

Answer 3:

And we also demonstrate that we understand that Jesus is the means Jehovah uses to save us and that we have promised to do God’s will. That is why baptism is so serious: it expresses real, personal, and conscious dedication.

4. What does being completely immersed in water symbolize?

Answer 1:

It symbolizes that our former way of life has ended. Being immersed represents leaving behind a past life that we no longer want to keep living, because we have decided to make changes in order to please Jehovah.

Answer 2:

It also illustrates something like a burial and a resurrection in a symbolic sense. It is as if the person we used to be is left behind and a new person emerges, with new priorities and a new goal in life.

Answer 3:

So baptism is not just a formal ceremony. It represents a deep and real change. It shows that we no longer want to live for ourselves, but to begin a new life centered on doing God’s will.

5. In what way is what we do to prepare for baptism similar to what Noah did to build the ark? (1 Peter 3:18-21).

Answer 1:

It is similar in that, at first, it may seem like a very big task. Just as building the ark must have seemed enormous, a Bible student may feel overwhelmed by everything he has to learn and change before getting baptized.

Answer 2:

But it is also similar in that it was absolutely necessary. Noah could not survive the Flood without carefully obeying God’s instructions. In a similar way, someone who wants to be saved cannot take lightly what Jehovah requires in order to reach baptism.

Answer 3:

And it is also similar in that Jehovah helps. Noah was able to do his part because he had faith and because he had God’s support. The same is true today: someone who wants to get baptized can make progress and succeed if he trusts in Jehovah and accepts the help He gives.

6. What did Peter mean when he said, “Baptism […] is also now saving you”?

Answer 1:

Peter did not mean that the simple act of going into the water saves a person. Water in itself does not wash away sins. The real basis for forgiveness and salvation is always the blood of Jesus Christ and the value of his sacrifice.

Answer 2:

What he meant is that baptism is part of the way to salvation because it is a command from Jehovah and because it publicly expresses that the person has repented, has dedicated himself to God, and is asking him for a good conscience.

Answer 3:

So baptism does not save by means of the water, but it is closely related to salvation. Jehovah responds favorably to the one who approaches him with faith, repentance, and dedication. That is why baptism has very serious spiritual value.

7. How should baptism be performed?

Answer 1:

It should be performed by complete immersion in water. That fits with the meaning of baptism and with what it symbolizes: leaving behind a former life and beginning a new life dedicated to doing Jehovah’s will.

Answer 2:

It should also be done in a dignified and proper way. Although the Bible does not give every practical detail, it does provide principles about modesty, order, and good conduct. Therefore, baptism should be performed with seriousness and respect.

Answer 3:

And it is good to remember that it does not depend on the prominence of the one doing the baptizing or on the number of people present. Normally an elder performs the baptism, but what matters is not who does it or how many people are there, but the spiritual meaning of the act.

8. What questions are baptism candidates asked, and why? (Acts 2:38-42).

Answer 1:

They are asked two questions. The first has to do with whether they have repented, have dedicated themselves to Jehovah, and have accepted Jesus Christ as the means God uses for salvation. That question confirms the spiritual steps they have already taken.

Answer 2:

The second has to do with whether they understand that, by getting baptized, they are publicly showing that they are Jehovah’s Witnesses and that they are part of God’s organization. That underscores the responsibility they take on when they take that step.

Answer 3:

These questions allow the candidate to make a public and conscious declaration of faith. Baptism is not something ambiguous or purely private. It is a clear expression that the person wants to serve Jehovah and do so along with his people.

9. What do all of us have to do in order to gain God’s approval?

Answer 1:

All of us need to repent and get baptized. It does not matter whether we formerly lived a morally upright life or whether we grew up in a Christian family. That alone is not enough to gain Jehovah’s approval.

Answer 2:

The reason is that all of us are born sinners and alienated from God. So even if someone has not committed very serious sins, he still needs to be reconciled to Jehovah and make the personal decision to do His will.

Answer 3:

That is why true repentance is needed, along with making changes and beginning to live in a way that pleases God. Then baptism has meaning, because it publicly expresses that this decision has already been made in the heart.

10. What should you do if you were already baptized as a member of another religion?

Answer 1:

You should get baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. The reason is that baptism approved by God must be based on accurate knowledge of the truth about Jehovah, his Son, and his will, and that normally was not present in false religion.

Answer 2:

Even if a person was sincere in the past and got baptized with good intentions, if he did not correctly understand the fundamental teachings of the Bible, that baptism does not meet Jehovah’s requirements.

Answer 3:

Sincerity is important, but truth is too. Therefore, when a person comes to know Jehovah in the right way, he needs to get baptized in harmony with that accurate knowledge and with true worship.

11. What does it mean to be baptized “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit”?

Answer 1:

It means recognizing the authority behind the Father, the Son, and the holy spirit. In the Bible, the term “name” refers not only to what someone is called, but also to his position, his reputation, and the authority he has.

Answer 2:

So being baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit is not just repeating a formula. It means accepting the role each one has in God’s purpose and wholeheartedly submitting to what Jehovah has arranged.

Answer 3:

In other words, baptism shows that we understand who Jehovah is, what role Jesus plays in our salvation, and how the holy spirit operates. It is not an empty act, but a public declaration of faith and recognition of authority.

12. What is involved in being baptized in the name of the Father?

Answer 1:

It involves recognizing that Jehovah is our heavenly Father, our Creator, and the Almighty God. We do not view Jehovah as a distant force, but as a real Person with authority over our life.

Answer 2:

It also involves recognizing that he listens to our prayers and that we use his name with deep respect. In other words, we do not simply believe that Jehovah exists, but we want to have a close and reverent relationship with him.

Answer 3:

And it also involves accepting that Jehovah saves us through Jesus Christ. It is not enough to believe in God in a general way. Baptism shows that we accept the specific way Jehovah has chosen to save mankind.

13. What is involved in being baptized in the name of the Son?

Answer 1:

It involves recognizing that Jesus is God’s only-begotten Son and that he is the only way that enables us to have a good relationship with Jehovah. There is no other means of salvation apart from him.

Answer 2:

It also involves recognizing that Jesus is our Redeemer, because he gave his life so that we may live forever. Knowing that should not move us only for a moment, but motivate us to follow his example every day.

Answer 3:

Therefore, if we are baptized in the name of the Son, we preach with enthusiasm, endure opposition out of loyalty to God, and respect Jesus’ position as Head of the congregation. It is not just about believing something about him, but about obeying him and following him.

14. a) What is involved in being baptized in the name of the holy spirit? b) What other baptisms do the anointed receive?

Answer 1:

Being baptized in the name of the holy spirit involves accepting the truth about the holy spirit: that it is not a person or part of a Trinity, but God’s active force. We recognize that Jehovah has used it to guide his servants and to inspire the Bible.

Answer 2:

It also involves appreciating the action of the holy spirit in our life. That is why we read and apply the Bible and strive not to grieve the holy spirit by committing serious sins or by living in a way that does not please Jehovah.

Answer 3:

As for the anointed, in addition to baptism in water, they receive other baptisms. They are baptized with holy spirit when they are chosen to go to heaven, they are baptized into Christ when they come to be united with him, and they are baptized into his death by remaining faithful until the end of their life on earth.

15. What goal should we set for ourselves?

Answer 1:

If we are already baptized, we should set the goal of understanding all aspects of the teachings about baptisms well. That will help us value our dedication more and live in harmony with the promise we made to Jehovah.

Answer 2:

It is not a matter of thinking that, since we have already been baptized, the subject is behind us. Rather, we should keep deepening our understanding of its meaning so that our appreciation for Jehovah, for Jesus, and for the privilege of serving them may keep growing over time.

Answer 3:

And if someone has not yet been baptized, he should honestly ask himself whether there is anything holding him back. Having a clear understanding of the importance of baptism can move him to keep progressing and not let more time than necessary pass before taking that step.

WHAT WOULD YOU ANSWER?

What do we demonstrate when we get baptized, and what does baptism symbolize?

Answer 1:

When we get baptized, we publicly demonstrate that we have accepted the truth about Jehovah and Jesus Christ, that we have repented, and that we have decided to do God’s will. In other words, baptism expresses real and conscious dedication.

Answer 2:

We also demonstrate that we understand that Jesus is the means of salvation Jehovah has provided and that we want to serve God along with his organization. That makes baptism a very serious and very beautiful public declaration.

Answer 3:

And baptism symbolizes that we have put an end to our former way of life and that we are beginning a new life dedicated to Jehovah. Being immersed in water represents leaving the old life behind; coming up out of the water represents beginning a new one.

What questions are baptism candidates asked, and why?

Answer 1:

They are asked two questions. The first confirms that they have repented, that they have dedicated themselves to Jehovah, and that they accept Jesus Christ as the means God uses for salvation.

Answer 2:

The second confirms that they understand that, by getting baptized, they are publicly showing that they are Jehovah’s Witnesses and that they are part of God’s organization. That underscores the responsibility they take on.

Answer 3:

These questions allow the candidate to make a public declaration of his faith. This makes it clear that baptism is not an impulsive or ambiguous act, but a conscious, serious, and well-understood decision.

What does it mean to be baptized “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit”?

Answer 1:

It means recognizing the authority and the role of the Father, the Son, and the holy spirit. It is not just a religious expression, but evidence that we understand how Jehovah acts in our salvation.

Answer 2:

It involves accepting that Jehovah is our Father and Creator, that Jesus is our Redeemer and the only way to God, and that the holy spirit is the active force Jehovah uses to guide and help us.

Answer 3:

So being baptized in that name means wholeheartedly submitting to what Jehovah has arranged and living in harmony with it. Baptism shows that we not only know those truths, but that we want to live in accord with them.

With the title: The Meaning and Importance of Baptism The theme: What baptism symbolizes, why it is so important, and how it is performed.
