If they notice pain, extreme tiredness, or fever, they do not say: “It’s nothing, I’ll ignore it.” The wise thing is to accept a diagnosis and follow a treatment. Something similar happens in a spiritual sense. There may be symptoms that indicate that something is not right: praying less often, little concentration at the meetings, a lack of enthusiasm for preaching, a tendency to criticize, or a growing attraction to things that Jehovah disapproves of. The question is: How do we react when Jehovah helps us to see those symptoms?

In this week’s reading of Jeremiah chapters 4 to 6, the first point shows that the people of Judah were stubborn and rebellious. Let us read Jeremiah 4:4.

Circumcise yourselves to Jehovah, and remove the foreskins of your hearts, O men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that my rage will not break out like a fire and burn with no one to extinguish it, because of your evil deeds.”

After reading it, let us notice that Jehovah does not focus only on outward appearances; he speaks of the heart. The Jews might have a religious identity, they might live near the temple, they might know certain customs, but Jehovah saw something deeper: they needed to remove from their heart what was drawing them away from him.

That teaches us that spiritual health is not measured only by what others see. We can be present at a meeting and still need help in the heart. We can share in spiritual activities and still be allowing some wrong desire to take root. That is why Jehovah invites us to examine ourselves sincerely, not to shame us, but to heal us.

Now let us read Jeremiah 4:14:

Cleanse your heart of what is bad, O Jerusalem, so that you may be saved. How long will you harbor your wicked thoughts within you?

This text adds another image: cleansing the heart of evil. Cleaning does not happen by accident. If a room gathers dust, it is not enough to wish that it were clean. You have to open it up, take things out, tidy up, and clean. In the same way, cleansing the heart involves identifying thoughts, habits, or influences that dirty us spiritually. Perhaps it is a form of entertainment that weakens our moral sensitivity. Perhaps it is accumulated resentment against a brother. Perhaps it is the habit of consuming information that feeds doubts, pride, or distrust.

The second point we are going to analyze is that Judah was not interested in receiving the diagnosis that Jehovah made of their spiritual state. Let us read Jeremiah 5:31:

It says: The prophets prophesy lies, and the priests use their authority to dominate others. And my own people love it that way. But what will you do when the end comes?”

As we finish the reading, let us notice a very serious expression: the people liked what the false guides said. They were not only being deceived; in a sense, they preferred to hear what confirmed their desires. That is a very current danger.

Today we live surrounded by voices. The internet, social media, opinions, comments, videos, forwarded messages… many voices compete for our attention. Some may sound pleasant because they tell us exactly what we want to hear. But an idea does not become true just because we like it, nor does it become spiritual just because it reassures us. Jehovah loves us too much to tell us only what is comfortable. At times his Word corrects us, wakes us up, and obliges us to make decisions.

Let us think about a medical visit. If the doctor says, “Everything is perfect” when there really is a serious illness, we may feel calm for a moment, but we will be in danger. By contrast, if he gives us a clear diagnosis and a treatment, perhaps at first it makes us uncomfortable, but it can save our life. Jehovah did that with Judah: he gave them warnings in time. The problem was that many did not want to listen to them.

The third point we will consider shows the consequences of not listening. Let us read Jeremiah 6:17-19:

“And I appointed watchmen over you, saying: ‘Pay attention to the sound of the horn!’ But they kept saying: ‘We refuse to pay attention.’ Therefore hear, O nations! And know, O assembly, what will happen to them. Hear, O earth! I am bringing a calamity on this people as the fruit of their own schemes, for they have paid no attention to my words, and they have rejected my law.”

As we read it, let us notice that Jehovah appointed watchmen and that the people answered that they would not pay attention. Jehovah did not punish without warning. He spoke to them again and again. He gave them opportunities. But they rejected the discipline.

What watchmen has Jehovah given us today? We have his Word, which warns us against materialism, immorality, violence, lying, and pride. We have the meetings, where we are reminded how to protect the heart. We have the elders, who shepherd with affection. We have Bible publications that help us to see spiritual dangers before they harm us. The question is whether we see those helps as an expression of Jehovah’s love or whether we fail to take advantage of them as we should.

The activity guide poses a final question: “What can I do to avoid becoming sick in a spiritual sense?” We can answer with several concrete measures. The first is to maintain a steady spiritual diet. No one stays healthy by eating once a month. In the same way, we cannot depend only on attending the meetings irregularly or on a text read in a hurry. We need to read the Bible regularly, meditate, and allow what we learn to influence our decisions.

The second measure is to pray transparently. Sometimes we do not need elegant words, but honesty. We can tell Jehovah: “I am finding it hard to forgive,” “I feel spiritually cold,” “I am attracted to something I know is not good for me,” “I need help to recover my joy.” Jehovah is not surprised to hear our struggles. On the contrary, he wants us to come to him before the problem advances.

The third measure is to accept correction. None of us enjoy having a fault pointed out. But humility allows us to see correction as medicine. Counsel based on the Bible may hurt a little at first, just like a treatment, but it can prevent much greater harm. If an elder, a spiritual family member, or a publication helps us to see something we should change, let us ask ourselves: “Is Jehovah giving me an opportunity to heal?”

The fourth measure is to be careful about our sources of information. If a sick person takes poison, they do not get better no matter how much healthy food they also eat. In the same way, we cannot nourish ourselves spiritually and at the same time fill the mind with ideas that weaken faith. We should ask ourselves: “Does this draw me closer to Jehovah, or does it make me more distrustful, more critical, more indifferent?”

In conclusion, Jehovah does not want us to become spiritually sick. That is why he speaks to us clearly, warns us in time, and offers us treatment by means of his Word and his organization. May we never imitate Judah, who rejected the diagnosis. Rather, let us accept Jehovah’s help with gratitude. If we cleanse the heart, listen to his warnings, and follow a good spiritual routine, we will be able to stay healthy, strong, and close to our God.

Theme: “Let Us Not Become Spiritually Sick as the People of Judah Did” When a person feels physically unwell, the most sensible thing is to pay attention to the symptoms.
