Rather, he allowed some false prophets to keep announcing a false message of peace. Since the people no longer wanted to listen to Jehovah’s warnings through Jeremiah, they ended up believing what they wanted to hear. The lesson is that it is not enough for a message to sound positive; it has to be in agreement with Jehovah’s truth.

Answer 2:

From Jeremiah’s point of view, it seemed that Jehovah had “deceived” the people, because many were hearing that there would be peace while in reality the sword was approaching. But the fault was not Jehovah’s; it lay with the false prophets and with those who preferred to listen to them. Today too we must be careful not to confuse what Jehovah permits with what he approves.

Answer 3:

Jehovah allowed deceptive messages to be proclaimed because the people had already shown that they did not want to accept discipline. In a sense, he let them follow the course they themselves had chosen. This teaches us that if a person repeatedly rejects the truth, he can end up believing ideas that draw him even further away from Jehovah.

Answer 4:

The rebellious people wanted to hear “you will have peace,” even though their conduct showed that they were far from Jehovah. That is why Jehovah did not stop the false prophets from speaking. This reminds us that true peace does not come from reassuring words but from a good relationship with Jehovah and from obeying his standards.

Answer 5:

This explanation helps us to defend Jehovah’s justice. He does not manipulate or deceive anyone; rather, he warns, corrects, and gives time to change. If someone prefers to believe lies, Jehovah may allow the consequences to become evident. That is why, in our own case, we want to listen to his Word even when it corrects us at times.

Perlas Escondidas para el capítulo 4 de Jeremías

Jeremiah 4:1

“If you would return, O Israel,” declares Jehovah, “if you would return to me and remove your disgusting idols from before me, then you would no longer be a fugitive.”

Comment 1:

Jehovah did not close the door to repentance. Although Israel had strayed far, he kept inviting the people to return. This teaches us that Jehovah does not look only at our mistakes but also at our willingness to correct our course. If someone has failed, he should not think that there is no longer any hope; Jehovah values a sincere return.

Jeremiah 4:2

“And if you swear with truthfulness, justice, and righteousness: ‘As surely as Jehovah lives!’, then the nations will obtain a blessing by means of him, and because of him they will speak with pride.”

Comment 2:

Serving Jehovah cannot be merely an outward appearance; it has to be joined to truth, justice, and righteousness. This text helps us to examine ourselves: when we speak about Jehovah, does our life confirm what we say? In the ministry, our words carry more weight when they are accompanied by honest, clean conduct.

Jeremiah 4:3

“Plow for yourselves arable land, and do not keep sowing among thorns.”

Comment 3:

Jehovah uses a very practical illustration: before sowing, the ground has to be prepared. In the same way, before God’s Word can produce fruit in us, we have to remove thorns such as pride, resentment, or distractions. In the ministry we also learn to be patient, because sometimes we first have to help the person soften his heart.

Jeremiah 4:4

“Circumcise yourselves to Jehovah, and remove the foreskins of your hearts, O men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that my rage may not blaze like a fire and burn with no one to extinguish it because of your evil deeds.”

Comment 4:

Jehovah did not want an outward religion but a clean heart. Physical circumcision was of no value if the heart remained hardened. This encourages us to examine our motives: do we obey out of habit, out of pressure, or out of love for Jehovah? True worship begins on the inside, in what we think, desire, and decide.

Jeremiah 4:10

“Then I said: ‘Alas, O Sovereign Lord Jehovah! You have completely deceived this people and Jerusalem by saying “You will have peace,” when the sword is at our throat.’”

Comment 5:

Jeremiah sincerely expressed his anguish. Although he did not fully understand why Jehovah was allowing false messages, he did not stop speaking to him. This teaches us that we can open our heart to Jehovah when something troubles us. Faith does not mean having no questions; it means taking them to Jehovah and continuing to trust in him.

Jeremiah 4:14

“Cleanse your heart of evil, O Jerusalem, so that you may be saved. How long will you harbor wicked thoughts?”

Comment 6:

Jehovah goes to the root of the problem: the heart and the thoughts. It is not enough to avoid a bad action if we keep feeding bad desires. This text is very useful for daily life, because it reminds us that spiritual cleanness begins in the mind. If we cut off wrong thoughts in time, we protect our friendship with Jehovah.

Jeremiah 4:18

“Your conduct and your deeds will bring this on you. How bitter is your calamity, for it reaches right to your heart!”

Comment 7:

Jehovah made it clear that the calamity was neither unjust nor arbitrary. The people themselves were reaping the fruit of their conduct. This teaches us personal responsibility: our spiritual decisions have consequences. Instead of blaming others when something goes wrong, it is good to ask ourselves what we can correct in order to draw closer to Jehovah.

Jeremiah 4:22

“For my people are foolish; they pay no attention to me. They are senseless children, without understanding. They are clever enough to do evil, but they do not know how to do good.”

Comment 8:

This text shows that a person can be very skilled at getting what he wants and still be foolish in a spiritual sense. True wisdom does not consist in getting one’s own way but in knowing how to do good. For us, Bible education is essential because it trains the conscience and helps us use our abilities well.

Jeremiah 4:27

“For this is what Jehovah says: ‘All this land will become desolate, but I will not bring it to complete destruction.’”

Comment 9:

Even in the midst of judgment, Jehovah showed mercy. He said there would be desolation, but also that there would not be total destruction. This teaches us that Jehovah’s discipline is never cruel or purposeless. He may allow painful consequences, but he always leaves a basis for hope when there are people willing to return to him.

Jeremiah 4:28

“For I have spoken, I have decided, and I will not change my mind nor turn back.”

Comment 10:

When Jehovah makes a just decision, nothing stops it. For the rebellious that was a serious warning, but for faithful servants it is a guarantee. Jehovah does not change his standards because of human pressure. In a world where standards are constantly changing, it gives us great security to know that his justice and his promises are firm.

Perlas Escondidas para el capítulo 5 de Jeremías

Jeremiah 5:1

“Roam through the streets of Jerusalem. Look around and observe. Search through her public squares to see whether you can find anyone who acts justly, anyone who wants to be faithful, and then I will forgive the city.”

Comment 1:

Jehovah was willing to forgive an entire city if he found genuine faithfulness. This reveals how much he values the loyalty of even a single person. At times we may think that our faithfulness goes unnoticed, but Jehovah sees it. Our conduct can have a positive effect on the congregation, the family, and the people to whom we preach.

Jeremiah 5:3

“O Jehovah, do your eyes not look for faithfulness? You struck them, but it had no effect on them. You exterminated them, but they refused to accept discipline. They made their faces harder than a rock, and they refused to return.”

Comment 2:

Jehovah does not look for perfection; he looks for faithfulness. The people’s problem was not that they made mistakes but that they refused to accept discipline. This gem helps us to react well when we receive counsel. If we correct ourselves humbly, we show that our heart is not hardened but sensitive to Jehovah’s direction.

Jeremiah 5:7

“How can I forgive you for this? Your sons have abandoned me and swear by what is not God. I made sure they lacked nothing, but they did not stop committing adultery and went in droves to the house of a prostitute.”

Comment 3:

Jehovah had cared for his people, but they responded with unfaithfulness. This reminds us that gratitude protects our spirituality. If we value what Jehovah gives us —his Word, the congregation, the hope— it will be harder for us to seek satisfaction in things that displease him. Gratitude strengthens loyalty.

Jeremiah 5:12

“They have denied Jehovah and keep saying: ‘He will do nothing. No calamity will come upon us; we will see neither sword nor famine.’”

Comment 4:

The people minimized Jehovah’s warnings. They said nothing would happen, as if Jehovah were not going to act. Today we could fall into something similar if we think that certain decisions will have no spiritual consequences. This text helps us to take the Bible’s warnings seriously, not out of fear but because we trust in Jehovah’s wisdom.

Jeremiah 5:14

“Therefore, this is what Jehovah, the God of armies, says: ‘Because these men are saying that, I am now going to make my words a fire in your mouth, and this people will be the wood, and the fire will consume them.’”

Comment 5:

Jehovah’s words were neither weak nor empty. Although some despised them, they had the power to be fulfilled. This is very encouraging in the preaching work. At times the message seems rejected, but it does not depend on our personal strength; it is Jehovah’s Word that has authority. Our task is to convey it faithfully and respectfully.

Jeremiah 5:18

“But even in those days,” declares Jehovah, “I will not bring you to complete destruction.”

Comment 6:

Jehovah balanced justice with mercy. Punishment would come, but it would not mean the absolute end of the people. This idea helps us to see that Jehovah disciplines with purpose, not on impulse. When he allows correction or consequences, he can also open a door to restoration. That gives us hope and moves us to repent quickly.

Jeremiah 5:21

“Hear this, O foolish and senseless people, who have eyes but do not see, who have ears but do not hear.”

Comment 7:

The problem was not a lack of information but a lack of spiritual attentiveness. They had eyes and ears, but they did not want to perceive what Jehovah was telling them. This invites us to ask ourselves: when we study or attend the meeting, do we merely hear words, or do we let them mold us? Really listening means taking action.

Jeremiah 5:22

“‘Do you not fear me?’ declares Jehovah. ‘Should you not tremble before me? I am the One who placed the sand as a boundary for the sea, a permanent limit that it cannot pass. Although its waves toss, they cannot prevail; although they roar, they cannot pass beyond it.’”

Comment 8:

Jehovah uses the sea to remind us of his power. The waves may seem unstoppable, but they obey the limits he set. This strengthens our confidence when we face problems that seem to overwhelm us. For Jehovah, nothing is uncontrollable. If we respect his authority, we find security even in turbulent times.

Jeremiah 5:24

“And they do not say in their heart: ‘Let us now fear Jehovah our God, the One who gives the rains in their season, the autumn rain and the spring rain, the One who guarantees us the weeks appointed for the harvest.’”

Comment 9:

The people enjoyed the rains and the harvests but did not acknowledge the Giver. This gem helps us to cultivate gratitude every day. Things that seem ordinary —food, life, family, the congregation— are evidences of Jehovah’s goodness. When we are thankful for them, our heart stays humble and closer to him.

Jeremiah 5:31

“The prophets prophesy lies, and the priests use their authority to dominate others. And my own people love it that way. But what will you do when the end comes?”

Comment 10:

This text explains why the people were deceived: there were religious leaders who spread lies, and the people liked to hear them. The application is clear: we should not follow messages just because they are popular or comfortable. We want to verify that what we accept is in agreement with Jehovah’s Word and with the direction he provides.

Perlas Escondidas para el capítulo 6 de Jeremías

Jeremiah 6:6

“For this is what Jehovah of armies says: ‘Cut down trees and raise up a siege rampart against Jerusalem. She is the city that must be called to account; there is nothing but oppression in her.’”

Comment 1:

Jehovah did not overlook the oppression. Although Jerusalem had an important religious reputation, she had to render an account for her conduct. This teaches us that a spiritual appearance never substitutes for justice and love. Jehovah observes how we treat others, especially when we have some responsibility or influence over them.

Jeremiah 6:8

“Heed the warning, O Jerusalem, or I will turn away from you in disgust; I will make you desolate, a land without inhabitants.”

Comment 2:

Jehovah’s warning was serious, but it also showed mercy: they could still heed it. This helps us to see the Bible’s warnings as an expression of love, not as a cold threat. When Jehovah corrects us through his Word, he is giving us the opportunity to avoid harm and stay close to him.

Jeremiah 6:10

“To whom should I speak? Whom should I warn? Who will listen? Look! Their ears are closed, and they are unable to pay attention. Look! The word of Jehovah has become something they despise and find no pleasure in.”

Comment 3:

Jeremiah felt how hard it was to preach to people who did not want to listen. This can encourage us in the ministry when we meet with indifference. We are not the first to go through this. Even so, we keep preaching because Jehovah’s words deserve to be announced, and because some sincere person may open his heart.

Jeremiah 6:13

“For from the least to the greatest, they are all making dishonest gain; from the prophet to the priest, they all practice fraud.”

Comment 4:

Corruption was widespread at every level. This teaches us that dishonesty can become normalized when a society moves away from Jehovah. But as God’s servants, we do not let ourselves be swept along by what everyone is doing. At work, in business, or in our studies, we want to be honest even when it costs us.

Jeremiah 6:14

“And they try to heal the breakdown of my people superficially, saying, ‘There is peace! There is peace!’ when there is no peace.”

Comment 5:

The false guides gave superficial comfort. They spoke pleasant words but did not heal the real problem: the lack of obedience to Jehovah. This teaches us not to look only for answers that make us feel good. Bible-based counsel sometimes corrects us, but that is precisely why it truly heals and protects us spiritually.

Jeremiah 6:16

“This is what Jehovah says: ‘Stand at the crossroads and look. Ask about the ancient paths, ask which is the good way, and walk in it, and you will find rest for yourselves.’ But they say: ‘We will not walk in it.’”

Comment 6:

Jehovah did not only point out the danger; he also indicated the good way. The key was to stop, ask, and walk in it. This text is very practical for making decisions. Before acting, we can stop, look for Bible principles, and ask for direction. The result is not a burdensome life but true inner rest.

Jeremiah 6:17

“And I appointed watchmen, who said: ‘Pay attention to the sound of the horn!’ But they replied: ‘We will not pay attention.’”

Comment 7:

Jehovah set up watchmen to warn the people, but they decided not to listen. Today Jehovah also cares for us through his Word, the congregation, and the spiritual warnings we receive. The question is whether we pay attention in time. Listening when we are warned can save us from painful consequences.

Jeremiah 6:19

“Listen, O earth! I am bringing a calamity on this people as the fruit of their own wicked schemes, because they have paid no attention to my words and have rejected my law.”

Comment 8:

The calamity is described as the fruit of their own schemes. This reminds us that Jehovah is not unjust when he allows someone to reap what he has sown. It also helps us to think before we decide: what fruit will this plan produce? If we pay attention to Jehovah’s law, we avoid sowing pain for the future.

Jeremiah 6:20

“What do I care if you bring frankincense from Sheba and sweet cane from a distant land? Your burnt offerings are not acceptable, and your sacrifices do not please me.”

Comment 9:

Jehovah is not impressed by costly offerings if obedience is lacking. True worship is not measured only by visible activities but by a clean heart and a life that pleases Jehovah. This helps us to serve him with integrity: we do not want to make up for bad conduct with religious acts but to obey him out of love.

Jeremiah 6:30

“People will surely call them rejected silver, because Jehovah has rejected them.”

Comment 10:

The image of the rejected silver is striking. After a process of testing, it became clear that the people did not want to part with their wickedness. This encourages us to accept Jehovah’s refining now. If we let his Word correct us, we can be useful and valuable to him, not like rejected metal but like clean servants.

Weekly question: In what sense did Jehovah deceive his people?
