In Gilead there was literal balm, a product known for its medicinal properties, but Judah’s problem was not physical but spiritual. They had wounds caused by idolatry, disobedience, and religious lies. That is why what they needed was to accept Jehovah’s correction.

Answer 2:

Jeremiah’s question expresses pain and surprise. It was like saying: “Is there no remedy for this people?” There were indeed means to heal, because Jehovah sent true prophets and clear warnings. But the people preferred to listen to false prophets and corrupt priests. The lack of healing was not due to Jehovah, but to the fact that they rejected his help.

Answer 3:

The balm of Gilead can remind us of the spiritual comfort that Jehovah provides today through the congregation. The elders, as Christian shepherds, can help us when we are discouraged or spiritually wounded. They point us to Bible principles, pray with us, and encourage us affectionately. That support can be like a balm that soothes and helps us heal.

Answer 4:

Jeremiah was not talking only about a literal remedy. He used the image of the balm to show that the people had a deep spiritual sickness. Today we learn that it is not enough to appear to be well; if we have spiritual wounds, we need to attend to them. Jehovah offers us help through his Word, prayer, the meetings, and the shepherds of the congregation.

Answer 5:

This question teaches us that Jehovah does not abandon those who need spiritual healing. The problem is rejecting the treatment. If a person is suffering because of a bad decision, a weakness, or discouragement, he should not isolate himself. He should seek the “balm” that Jehovah provides, because He wants to heal, comfort, and strengthen his servants.

Perlas Escondidas para el capítulo 7 de Jeremías

Jeremiah 7:3

“This is what Jehovah of armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘Correct your ways and your deeds, and I will let you keep residing in this place.’”

Comment 1:

Jehovah did not ask for mere words of repentance, but for real changes in conduct and in actions. This teaches us that true repentance is shown by deeds. If Jehovah helps us to see something we need to correct, it is not enough to feel bad; we must act and make the necessary adjustments to stay close to him.

Jeremiah 7:4

“Do not put your trust in deceptive words and say, ‘This is the temple of Jehovah, the temple of Jehovah, the temple of Jehovah!’”

Comment 2:

The people thought that, because they had the temple, Jehovah would always protect them. But Jehovah showed them that a religious appearance is worthless if there is no obedience. Today we likewise do not want to rely merely on limiting ourselves to certain spiritual routines or on saying that we serve Jehovah. What matters is that our life demonstrates in every facet that we truly respect him and do his will.

Jeremiah 7:5, 6

“For if you truly correct your ways and your deeds, if you truly carry out justice between a man and his neighbor, if you do not oppress the foreign residents, the fatherless children, or the widows, and you do not shed innocent blood in this place and you do not follow other gods to your own harm,”

Comment 3:

Jehovah linked true worship with justice and good treatment of others. He did not want his people to be spiritual on the outside and cruel or unjust on the inside. This reminds us that our spirituality is seen in how we treat the most vulnerable, our family, our brothers, and the people we meet in the ministry.

Jeremiah 7:8

“But you are trusting in deceptive words… It will be of no benefit.”

Comment 4:

Deceptive words can sound reassuring, but they are of no use if they draw us away from Jehovah. The people preferred to hear messages that did not demand changes. Today we too must be careful with ideas that justify bad conduct or minimize spiritual danger. Jehovah’s truth corrects, but it also always protects us.

Jeremiah 7:10

“And then come and stand before me in this house that bears my name and say ‘We will be saved,’ despite doing all these detestable things?”

Comment 5:

Jehovah made it clear that he did not accept hypocritical worship. The people did bad things and then went to the temple as if nothing had happened. This helps us to examine ourselves honestly. We do not want to live a double life, but to serve Jehovah with integrity both in the congregation and when no one sees us.

Jeremiah 7:13

“But you kept doing all these things,” declares Jehovah, “and although I spoke to you again and again, you did not listen. I kept calling you, but you did not answer.”

Comment 6:

This text shows Jehovah’s patience. He did not correct the people just once; he spoke to them again and again. But they did not want to listen. This teaches us to value every Bible reminder, every meeting, and every piece of advice. When Jehovah calls us through his Word, the wisest thing is to respond with humility and promptness.

Jeremiah 7:16

“And as for you, do not pray for this people. Do not plead or pray or beg me on their behalf, for I will not listen to you.”

Comment 7:

These words show that Jehovah’s patience has limits when someone insists on rebelling. It is not that Jehovah is not merciful, but that the people had repeatedly rejected his warnings. The lesson for us is serious: we must not abuse divine patience, but accept correction while there is still opportunity.

Jeremiah 7:23

“But this is what I commanded them: ‘Obey my voice, and I will be your God and you will be my people. You must always walk in the way that I command you, so that it may go well with you.’”

Comment 8:

Here Jehovah sums up what he really wanted: obedience from the heart. Sacrifices could not replace an obedient life. Moreover, Jehovah does not command on a whim; he says “so that it may go well with you.” This helps us to view his standards as loving protection. Obeying Jehovah is always best for us.

Jeremiah 7:24

“But they did not listen or pay attention; instead, they followed their own plans and stubbornly let themselves be led by their wicked heart. They went backward and not forward.”

Comment 9:

When a person stops listening to Jehovah and is guided by his own plans, he does not advance spiritually; he goes backward. This text invites us to ask ourselves whether our decisions are bringing us closer to Jehovah or drawing us away from him. Spiritual progress requires listening, obeying, and not letting ourselves be led by a stubborn heart.

Jeremiah 7:28

“And you will say to them: ‘This is the nation that did not obey the voice of Jehovah its God and refused to accept discipline. Faithfulness has perished and they do not even mention it.’”

Comment 10:

What a sad description: faithfulness had disappeared even from their conversations. This helps us to value Jehovah’s discipline. Accepting it is not a burden but a protection so that our faithfulness stays alive. When we talk about Jehovah, study his Word, and accept his guidance, we keep our loyalty to him strong.

Perlas Escondidas para el capítulo 8 de Jeremías

Jeremiah 8:4

“And you must say to them: ‘This is what Jehovah says: “If people fall, do they not get up again? If one turns back, will the other not turn back too?”’”

Comment 1:

Jehovah uses a simple comparison: if someone falls, the normal thing is for him to get up. But the people had fallen spiritually and did not want to return. This teaches us that making a mistake does not have to be the end. What is dangerous is refusing to get up. Jehovah greatly values it when we react and return to him.

Jeremiah 8:5

“Why does this people, Jerusalem, persist in its unfaithfulness? They cling to deception; they refuse to return.”

Comment 2:

The problem was not only that the people had been deceived, but that they clung to the deception. Sometimes a false idea can be comfortable because it does not demand changes. That is why we need to love the truth more than comfort. If Jehovah shows us that something is wrong, the best thing is to let go of it and return to him.

Jeremiah 8:6

“I paid attention and kept listening, but the way they spoke was not right. No one repented of his wickedness, asking, ‘What have I done?’”

Comment 3:

Jehovah listened attentively, but he did not find sincere repentance. No one asked himself: “What have I done?” That question can help us a great deal. When something goes wrong, it is not good to justify ourselves right away, but to examine ourselves with humility. Acknowledging our mistakes is the first step toward receiving Jehovah’s help and forgiveness.

Jeremiah 8:7

“Even the stork in the sky knows its seasons; the turtledove, the swift, and the thrush keep to the time of their return. But my own people do not understand the judgment of Jehovah.”

Comment 4:

Jehovah compares the people to birds that recognize their seasons. Even the animals follow the cycles that Jehovah has established, but his people did not understand his guidance. This reminds us that creation can teach us obedience and sensitivity. We, with all the more reason, want to be attentive to the spiritual times and act with wisdom.

Jeremiah 8:8

“How can you say, ‘We are wise, and we have the law of Jehovah’? For in reality, the deceptive pen of the scribes has been used only for falsehood.”

Comment 5:

Having access to Jehovah’s Law did not make the people wise, because some manipulated it and used it wrongly. This teaches us that it is not enough to have the Bible; we must respect it and let it correct us. In the ministry, we want to use God’s Word honestly, not to support personal ideas.

Jeremiah 8:9

“The wise ones have been put to shame. They are terrified and will be caught. Look! They have rejected the word of Jehovah, so what wisdom do they have?”

Comment 6:

This verse reminds us that there is no true wisdom if Jehovah’s words are rejected. A person may have education, experience, or great self-confidence, but if he ignores Jehovah, his wisdom is limited. We show wisdom when we let the Bible guide our decisions and our way of thinking.

Jeremiah 8:11

“And they try to heal the wound of the daughter of my people superficially, saying, ‘There is peace! There is peace!’ when there is no peace.”

Comment 7:

The religious leaders gave superficial comfort. They said “peace,” but they did not help the people to correct the cause of their spiritual wounds. This teaches us that true love does not always consist in saying what others want to hear, but what they need to hear. Sincere Bible counsel can truly heal.

Jeremiah 8:15

“We expected peace, but nothing good came; a time of healing, but there is only terror!”

Comment 8:

The people expected peace and healing, but they had rejected the only path that could give them these: obeying Jehovah. This teaches us that we cannot expect good spiritual results if we ignore Bible principles. True peace does not depend on wishes or fine words, but on being in a good relationship with Jehovah.

Jeremiah 8:21

“I am crushed by the wound of the daughter of my people; I am very sad. Horror has seized me.”

Comment 9:

Jeremiah did not preach coldly; the spiritual condition of the people pained him. This teaches us much about the ministry. Even though some people reject the message, we should not become indifferent. We want to keep a compassionate heart, like Jeremiah, and like Jesus, who also felt deep compassion for those who were spiritually unwell.

Jeremiah 8:22

“Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why has the wound of the daughter of my people not been healed?”

Comment 10:

This text shows that there was an urgent need for spiritual healing. Today we do have a spiritual “balm”: Jehovah’s help through his Word, the congregation, prayer, and the Christian shepherds. If we feel wounded or weakened, we should not remain alone; Jehovah has provided help to comfort and strengthen us.

Weekly question: Jeremiah said: “Is there no balm in Gilead?” What was he referring to?
