In Gilead there was literal balm, a product known for its medicinal properties, but Judah’s problem was not physical, but spiritual. They had wounds caused by idolatry, disobedience and religious lies. Therefore, what they needed was to accept the correction of Jehovah.

Answer 2:

Jeremiah’s question expresses pain and surprise. It was like saying, “Is there no remedy for this people?” If there were means to heal, because Jehovah sent true prophets and clear warnings. But the people preferred to listen to false prophets and corrupt priests. The lack of healing was not due to Jehovah, but because they rejected their help.

Answer 3:

The balm of Gilead can remind us of the spiritual comfort that Jehovah gives today through the congregation. Elders, as Christian pastors, can help us when we are discouraged or spiritually wounded. They point us at biblical principles, pray with us and encourage us with affection. That support can be like a balm that calms and helps heal.

Answer 4:

Jeremiah wasn’t just talking about a literal remedy. He used the balm image to show that the people had a deep spiritual illness. Today we learn that it is not enough to appear well; if we have spiritual wounds, we need to attend to them. Jehovah offers us help through his Word, prayer, meetings, and pastors of the congregation.

Answer 5:

This question teaches us that Jehovah does not abandon those who need spiritual healing. The problem is refusing treatment. If a person is suffering from a bad decision, a weakness or discouragement, he should not isolate himself. He must seek the Balm, which Jehovah provides, for he desires to heal, to comfort and strengthen his servants.

Perlas Escondidas para el capítulo 7 de Jeremías

Jeremiah 7:3

This is what Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, says, Correct their conduct and their deeds, and I will let them continue to live in this place.

Comment 1:

Jehovah did not ask for simple words of repentance, but real changes in conduct and actions. This teaches us that true repentance is demonstrated by facts. If Jehovah helps us see something we must correct, it is not enough to feel bad; we must act and make the necessary adjustments to follow him.

Jeremiah 7:4

Do not trust in deceitful words or say, This is the temple of Jehovah, the temple of Jehovah, the temple of Jehovah.

Comment 2:

The people thought that, by having the temple, Jehovah would always protect them. But Jehovah showed them that a religious appearance is of no use if there is no obedience. Today we also do not want to trust to limit ourselves to certain spiritual routines or to say that we serve Jehovah. The important thing is for our life to show in all facets that we really respect it and we do its will.

Jeremiah 7:5, 6

For if they correct their conduct and their actions, if they really do justice between a man and his neighbor, if they do not oppress foreign residents or orphans or widows, if they shed innocent blood in this place and if they do not follow other gods for their own misfortune.

Comment 3:

Jehovah linked true worship to righteousness and good treatment to others. He didn’t want his people to be spiritual out of the way and cruel or unjust on the inside. This reminds us that our spirituality is seen in how we treat the most vulnerable, the family, the brothers and the people we find in the ministry.

Jeremiah 7:8

But do you trust deceptive words… That won’t do any good.

Comment 4:

Deceptive words may sound reassuring, but they are of no use if they take us away from Jehovah. The people preferred to hear messages that did not demand change. Today we must also be careful with ideas that justify misconduct or minimize spiritual danger. The truth of Jehovah corrects, but also, always, protects us.

Jeremiah 7:10

And then come and show up before me in this house that bears my name and say we will be saved despite being doing all these detestable things?

Comment 5:

Jehovah made it clear that he did not accept hypocritical worship. The people did bad things and then went to the temple as if nothing happened. This helps us examine ourselves honestly. We do not want to live a double life, but to serve Jehovah with integrity both in the congregation and when no one sees us.

Jeremiah 7:13

But you kept doing all these things, Jehovah says, and, though I spoke to you over and over again, you did not heed. I called them, but you guys weren’t answering.

Comment 6:

This text shows the patience of Jehovah. He did not correct the people once; he spoke to them over and over again. But they didn’t want to listen. This teaches us to value every biblical reminder, every meeting and every council. When Jehovah calls us through his Word, the wisest thing is to respond with humility and promptness.

Jeremiah 7:16

And you, don’t pray for this town. Don’t pray or pray for them, because I won’t listen to you.

Comment 7:

These words show that Jehovah’s patience has limits when someone is determined to rebel. It is not that Jehovah is not merciful, but that the people had repeatedly rejected his warnings. The lesson for us is serious: we must not abuse divine patience, but accept correction while there is still opportunity.

Jeremiah 7:23

But I commanded you the following: Know your voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people. You have to always walk the path I send them, so that they can do well.

Comment 8:

Jehovah sums up here what he really wanted: obedience from the heart. Sacrifices could not replace an obedient life. And Jehovah commandeth not on a whim; he saith, that it may go well with them. This helps us to see their rules as loving protection. Obeying Jehovah is always the best thing for us.

Jeremiah 7:24

But they did not listen or pay attention, but followed their own plans and stubbornly got carried away by their evil heart. They went backwards, and not going forward.

Comment 9:

When a person stops listening to Jehovah and is guided by his own plans, he does not advance spiritually; he goes backwards. This text invites us to wonder whether our decisions are bringing us closer to or from Jehovah. Spiritual progress requires listening, obeying and not letting ourselves be carried away by a stubborn heart.

Jeremiah 7:28

And thou shalt say unto them, This is the nation that hath not obeyed the voice of Jehovah his God, and refused to accept discipline. The fidelity has died and they don’t even mention it.

Comment 10:

What a sad description: fidelity had disappeared even from their conversations. This helps us to value Jehovah’s discipline. Accepting it is not a burden, but a protection for our fidelity to be alive. When we speak of Jehovah, we study His Word and accept His guidance, we maintain our loyalty to him strong.

Perlas Escondidas para el capítulo 8 de Jeremías

Jeremiah 8:4

And thou shalt say unto them, Is this what Jehovah says: shall they fall, and not arise again? If you turn back, won’t you become the other too?

Comment 1:

Jehovah uses a simple comparison: if someone falls, it’s normal for them to get up. But the people had fallen spiritually and didn’t want to come back. This teaches us that making a mistake doesn’t have to be the end. The dangerous thing is to refuse to get up. Jehovah greatly values us reacting and returning to him.

Jeremiah 8:5

Why does this people, Jerusalem, persist in their infidelity? They cling to deception; they refuse to return.

Comment 2:

The problem was not only that the people had been deceived, but clinging to deception. Sometimes a false idea can be comfortable because it doesn’t require change. That’s why we need to love the truth more than comfort. If Jehovah shows us that something is wrong, it is best to let him go and return to him.

Jeremiah 8:6

I paid attention and listened, but the way they spoke wasn’t right. No one repented of his evil or asked what have I done?

Comment 3:

Jehovah listened intently, but he found no sincere repentance. Nobody wondered: What have I done? That question can help us a lot. When something goes wrong, it is not appropriate to justify us immediately, but to examine us with humility. Recognizing our mistakes is the first step in receiving Jehovah’s help and forgiveness.

Jeremiah 8:7

The stork in the sky knows its seasons; the turtle, the winning man and the tordo stick to the time of his return. But my own people do not understand the judgment of Jehovah.

Comment 4:

Jehovah compares the people to birds that recognize their times. Even the animals follow the cycles which Jehovah has established, but his people did not understand his guidance. This reminds us that creation can teach us obedience and sensitivity. We, more rightly, want to be attentive to spiritual times and act wisely.

Jeremiah 8:8

How can you say We are wise and have the law of Jehovah? Because, in reality, the deceptive pen of scribes has only been used for falsehoods.

Comment 5:

Having access to the law of Jehovah did not make the people wise, for some manipulated them and used it evil. This teaches us that it is not enough to have the Bible; we must respect it and let it correct us. In ministry, we want to use the Word of God with honesty, not to support personal ideas.

Jeremiah 8:9

The sages have been ashamed. They have been terrified and will be caught. Look. They have rejected the words of Jehovah, and what wisdom do they have?

Comment 6:

This verse reminds us that there is no true wisdom if the words of Jehovah are rejected. A person may have studies, experience or much self-safeness, but if he ignores Jehovah, his wisdom is limited. We show wisdom when we let the Bible guide our decisions and our way of thinking.

Jeremiah 8:11

And they try to superficially heal the wounds of my people’s daughter, saying There is peace. There is peace, when there is no peace.

Comment 7:

Religious leaders gave superficial comfort. They said “peace,” but they did not help the people to correct the cause of their spiritual wounds. This teaches us that true love is not always about saying what others want to hear, but what they need to hear. The sincere biblical council can really heal.

Jeremiah 8:15

Peace was expected, but nothing good came; a time of healing, but what is there is terror.

Comment 8:

The people waited for peace and healing, but they had rejected the only way that could be given them: to obey Jehovah. This teaches us that we cannot expect good spiritual results if we ignore biblical principles. True peace depends not on fine desires or words, but on being well with Jehovah.

Jeremiah 8:21

Am I shattered by the wounds of my people’s daughter; I am very sad. The horror has taken hold of me.

Comment 9:

Jeremiah did not preach coldly; the spiritual condition of the people hurt. This teaches us a lot about ministry. Even if some people reject the message, we should not become indifferent. We want to preserve a compassionate heart, like Jeremiah, and like Jesus, who also felt deep compassion for those who were spiritually evil.

Jeremiah 8:22

Isn’t there any balm in Gilead? Isn’t there a doctor there? Why hasn’t my village daughter healed?

Comment 10:

This text shows that there was an urgent need for spiritual healing. Today we do have a spiritual Balm: the help of Jehovah through his Word, the congregation, prayer, and Christian pastors. If we feel wounded or weakened, we must not be left alone; Jehovah has provided help to comfort and strengthen us.

Weekly question: Jeremiah said, “Is there no balm in Gilead?” What did you mean?
