(a) Why can we say that the Bible is a very old book?

Answer 1:
We can say that the Bible is a very old book because it began to be written thousands of years ago and was completed almost two thousand years ago. Even so, that does not make it an outdated book. On the contrary, it still has enormous value because it contains the message of Jehovah, the living God.

Answer 2:
Although the Bible was written in times very different from ours, it has not lost its value. Its counsel has helped millions of people over the centuries. That shows that it is not simply an ancient human work but an inspired book that still has the power to influence people’s lives.

Answer 3:
Hebrews 4:12 says that the word of God is alive and exerts power. That explains why the Bible, although it is very old, still touches the hearts of those who read it. It is not a dead or outdated book; it is a living guide that Jehovah keeps using to help us.

1, 2. (b) Why is the Bible still practical?

Answer 1:
The Bible is still practical because it comes from Jehovah, our Creator. He knows better than anyone how we are made, what we need, and which decisions will make us happy. That is why his counsel does not depend on trends, cultures, or time periods; it always works because it reflects his perfect wisdom.

Answer 2:
Another reason is that the Bible contains principles that never change. The circumstances of life may be different today, but the underlying problems remain similar: relationships, decisions, temptations, family, work, and worship. Bible principles help us to act wisely in all those areas.

Answer 3:
Second Timothy 3:16, 17 shows that the Scriptures are beneficial for teaching, for setting things straight, and for equipping us. That shows that the Bible is not only useful for learning history or doctrine but for living better each day and making decisions that please Jehovah.

3. What questions will this article answer?

Answer 1:
This article will answer what Bible principles are, why they are so important, and how we can identify them when we read the Bible. It is a very practical subject, because many times we will not find a specific law for every situation, but we will find a principle to guide us.

Answer 2:
We will also see how Jesus taught his listeners to identify principles in the Sermon on the Mount. He did not merely repeat laws; he helped his disciples to understand Jehovah’s way of thinking. That teaches us to go beyond the letter of the law and to look for the spiritual reason behind it.

Answer 3:
The article will help us to make better use of our power of reason. Jehovah does not want us to act like robots, waiting for a rule for every detail. He wants us to learn to think as he does, to understand his principles, and to make decisions that show love and spiritual maturity.

WHAT ARE BIBLE PRINCIPLES?

4. What are Bible principles?

Answer 1:
Bible principles are fundamental truths that serve as the basis for Jehovah’s laws. We could say that they are the reasons behind his commands. So when we understand a principle, we not only know what to do but also why Jehovah wants us to act that way.

Answer 2:
A law is usually specific and applies to a particular situation, but a principle is broader. For example, a law may tell us what conduct to avoid; the principle helps us to recognize other similar situations, even if they are not mentioned directly. That prepares us to make better decisions.

Answer 3:
Psalm 119:111 shows that Jehovah’s reminders are a valuable possession. Bible principles are part of that valuable guidance because they reflect Jehovah’s way of thinking. Laws may change according to circumstances, but principles never expire.

5. What example could be used to explain the difference between laws and principles?

Answer 1:
The example of the mother and the child explains it very well. The law would be: “Do not touch the fire”. But the principle behind that law is broader: we should not touch anything that could burn us. That principle also applies to an iron, a heater, or any hot object.

Answer 2:
The law can change with time. When the child grows up, he may be able to use the fire on the stove. But the principle will still be valid: he must act carefully so as not to hurt himself. That shows that principles are more lasting and more widely applicable than a specific rule.

Answer 3:
This example helps us to understand how Jehovah educates us. He does not want us merely to memorize laws but to learn to think. If we understand the principle behind an instruction, we will be able to apply it in many new situations, even when there is no specific rule.

WHY ARE BIBLE PRINCIPLES IMPORTANT?

6. (a) How does Jehovah guide us by means of his Word?

Answer 1:
Jehovah guides us by means of specific laws that protect us from many dangers. For example, his commands about morality, honesty, and true worship help us to avoid decisions that could harm us spiritually, emotionally, or even physically.

Answer 2:
In addition to laws, Jehovah gives us principles that help us in situations where there is no direct rule. This is very useful, because life changes and new circumstances arise. But if we know Jehovah’s way of thinking, we can decide wisely even when the Bible does not mention every case.

Answer 3:
James 2:11 shows that God’s laws are backed by Jehovah’s authority. But he does not only tell us what to avoid; he also helps us to understand the reasons. So his Word does not guide us in a cold way but with love and with wisdom.

6. (b) How does Jehovah dignify us?

Answer 1:
Jehovah dignifies us because he allows us to make decisions using our power of reason. He does not treat us as if we were unable to think but as people who are able to learn, to analyze principles, and to show by our decisions that we love him.

Answer 2:
Galatians 5:13 speaks about Christian freedom. Jehovah gives us freedom, not to do whatever we want, but to use it well. When we make decisions based on principles, we show that we do not serve Jehovah merely out of obligation but because we respect his standards.

Answer 3:
This makes us feel valued. Jehovah could give us an endless list of rules, but he prefers to train our mind and our heart. By applying principles, we show maturity, love, and trust in him. And that makes our worship more personal and sincere.

7. Use an illustration to explain the value of Bible principles.

Answer 1:
The article compares Bible principles to road signs that warn of dangers. Some signs indicate specific laws, such as a speed limit. But others help us to use good judgment, for example, when they warn of a dangerous curve or a slippery road.

Answer 2:
In the same way, the Bible does not only tell us what things are forbidden. It also teaches us to detect spiritual dangers before we reach the point of disobeying. A mature Christian does not ask only: “Is this forbidden?”, but rather: “Where could this lead me?”.

Answer 3:
This example helps me to see that principles are a protection. A careful driver does not wait until he has an accident to slow down. It is the same with us; if we sense that a certain decision could weaken our spirituality, we act with good judgment before the danger grows.

8. According to Romans 12:1, 2, how do we benefit from looking for the principles contained in the Bible?

Answer 1:
Looking for principles helps us to think as Jehovah does. When we read a Bible account, we do not only see what happened; we also ask ourselves what it teaches us about Jehovah, about his standards, and about how to make good decisions today.

Answer 2:
Romans 12:1, 2 says that we should use our power of reason and prove to ourselves what the will of God is. That means that our worship should not be mechanical. By looking for principles, we analyze, we meditate, and we make decisions that spring from a well-reasoned faith.

Answer 3:
It also benefits us because it makes the Bible more practical for our daily life. Instead of reading merely to gather information, we look for lessons. In that way, each reading can help us to change our way of thinking, adjust our conduct, and draw closer to Jehovah.

9. What other benefit do we gain from living in harmony with Bible principles?

Answer 1:
By living in harmony with principles, we become more mature Christians. We do not always depend on someone telling us exactly what to do. We learn to distinguish between what is right and what is wrong and to make decisions that please Jehovah.

Answer 2:
Hebrews 5:13, 14 speaks about having our powers of discernment trained. That is achieved through practice, not merely by listening to counsel. Each time we apply a Bible principle, we train our conscience and our way of thinking so that we draw closer to Jehovah’s will.

Answer 3:
Another benefit is that we make Jehovah’s heart glad. He does not want us to obey him merely out of fear of punishment, like a small child. He wants us to act out of love, understanding his principles and showing that we trust his way of viewing things.

HOW CAN WE IDENTIFY BIBLE PRINCIPLES?

10. How can we identify Bible principles?

Answer 1:
We can identify them by looking for the reasons behind a law or a Bible account. Instead of stopping at what is said, we should ask ourselves: “What does this teach me about Jehovah? What way of thinking does he want me to have?”.

Answer 2:
Proverbs 2:10-12 shows that wisdom and thinking ability can protect us. That is why we need to ask Jehovah for help to understand his Word and then make an effort to reason. Identifying principles requires prayer, study, and reflection.

Answer 3:
We can also ask ourselves practical questions: “If Jehovah does not approve of this conduct, what will he think of something similar? How can I apply this lesson at work, in my family, in entertainment, or on social media?”. In that way the Bible guides real decisions.

11. In his Sermon on the Mount, how did Jesus teach us to identify Bible principles?

Answer 1:
Jesus taught his listeners to identify principles by showing the idea behind certain laws. He did not merely quote well-known commands; he explained what attitude or desire Jehovah wanted his servants to avoid or to cultivate. In that way he taught them to think spiritually.

Answer 2:
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus went to the heart of the Law. He showed that Jehovah looks not only at what we do outwardly but also at what we think, feel, and desire. That helps us to examine not only our actions but also our motives.

Answer 3:
This method of Jesus is very useful for us. When we read a Bible law, we can ask ourselves: “What principle is Jehovah teaching here?”. In that way we do not apply the Bible superficially but try to grasp our Father’s way of thinking.

12. What is one of the principles behind the law mentioned at Matthew 5:21, 22?

Answer 1:
One of the principles is that Jehovah does not want us to nurture hatred in our heart. The law said, “You must not murder”, but Jesus showed that the problem begins much earlier, when a person lets himself be ruled by wrath, contempt, or resentment.

Answer 2:
Matthew 5:21, 22 teaches that Jehovah condemns not only murder but also the attitudes that can lead to mistreating others. If someone continues wrathful with his brother or insults him, he is displaying a spirit that Jehovah does not approve of.

Answer 3:
This principle helps us to see how serious hurtful words are. Someone might never think of physically harming another person, yet he could destroy that person’s reputation with cruel comments. Jehovah wants us to remove those roots of hatred before they cause harm.

13. How can we apply the principle of Matthew 5:21, 22 in our life?

Answer 1:
We can apply it by fighting against grudges and resentment. If we let those feelings grow, they can turn into harsh words, gossip, or slander. So when something upsets us, it is better to resolve it with humility and not to feed negative thoughts.

Answer 2:
Leviticus 19:18 says that we must not take vengeance or hold a grudge. That text helps us to cut the problem off at the root. If we forgive and leave the matter in Jehovah’s hands, we keep resentment from making us bitter or leading us to speak badly of others.

Answer 3:
This principle also applies to social media and to messaging. Before sharing something about another person, we should ask ourselves whether it reflects love or whether it could damage that person’s reputation. A mature Christian does not take part in what could be called “character assassination”.

14. What principle lies behind the law mentioned at Matthew 5:27, 28?

Answer 1:
The principle is that Jehovah hates not only sexual immorality but also the thoughts that can lead to it. Jesus explained that a person may be cultivating wrong desires before committing an immoral act. That is why we must protect our mind and our heart.

Answer 2:
Matthew 5:27, 28 shows that looking with immoral desire is not something innocent. Jehovah sees what happens in the heart. So it is not enough to avoid visible bad conduct; we must also reject any thought that could feed unclean desires.

Answer 3:
This principle is useful for married and single people alike. It teaches us that Christian purity begins in the mind. If we avoid dwelling on immoral images, fantasies, or conversations, we are protecting our relationship with Jehovah and respecting his standards.

15. How can we apply the principle of Matthew 5:27, 28 in our life?

Answer 1:
We can apply it by avoiding anything that awakens or feeds immoral desires. A mature Christian does not excuse himself by saying that he is “only looking”. He knows that what enters through the eyes can affect the heart and lead him to decisions that displease Jehovah.

Answer 2:
Job 31:1 shows that Job made a covenant with his eyes. That example teaches us to be decisive. If an app, a social network, a series, or a website puts us in danger, the wisest thing is to turn away quickly, without bargaining with temptation.

Answer 3:
This principle also helps us with modern dangers such as pornography, sexting, or suggestive content on the Internet. Although those things did not exist in Jesus’ day, the principle did. Jehovah wants us to avoid everything that could lead us into immorality.

16. What principle lies behind the law mentioned at Matthew 5:43, 44?

Answer 1:
The principle is that Jehovah wants us to view everyone as our neighbor and to treat them with love. In Jesus’ day, some thought that they could love certain people and hate others, but Jesus corrected that limited way of understanding the law.

Answer 2:
Matthew 5:43, 44 teaches that we must love even our enemies and pray for those who persecute us. That shows that Christian love does not depend on others treating us well. We imitate Jehovah by being kind even to difficult people.

Answer 3:
This principle reflects how wide Jehovah’s love is. He does not approve of prejudice based on race, nationality, religion, or background. If we want to think as he does, we must strive to treat all people with dignity, respect, and compassion.

17. How can we apply the principle of Matthew 5:43, 44 in our life?

Answer 1:
We can apply it by remaining neutral in the conflicts of this world. If we view everyone as our neighbor, we could not support wars or hate people from another country. Our Christian love rises above political or national divisions.

Answer 2:
Acts 10:34, 35 shows that God is not partial. So we should treat people of any race, culture, or religion with kindness. In the ministry, this helps us to approach everyone with respect and not to allow prejudice to limit our love.

Answer 3:
We also apply this principle by forgiving those who hurt us. It will not always be easy, but Jesus taught that Christian love goes beyond what is natural. By forgiving and not returning evil for evil, we show that we want to reflect Jehovah’s personality.

DETERMINED TO LIVE BY BIBLE PRINCIPLES

18. (a) What should we be determined to do?

Answer 1:
We should be determined to live by Bible principles every day. It is not enough to know them or to talk about them at the meetings. What matters is using them when making decisions about entertainment, friendships, work, family, and worship.

Answer 2:
First Corinthians 14:20 encourages us to be adults in our powers of understanding. Jehovah wants mature Christians who do not need a rule for every detail. So we should make an effort to understand his principles and to apply them responsibly.

Answer 3:
We should also act out of love for Jehovah, not merely out of fear of making a mistake. When a decision is based on love, we want to please him even if no one sees us. That is the kind of service that honors Jehovah and shows that we value his guidance.

18. (b) What will we discuss in the next article?

Answer 1:
The next article will discuss another gift that Jehovah has given us: the conscience. This subject is closely related to Bible principles, because our conscience needs to be well trained in order to help us make decisions that Jehovah approves of.

Answer 2:
Ephesians 5:17 says that we should perceive what the will of Jehovah is. To do that, we need Bible principles and a well-trained conscience. So the next study will help us to see how to use those principles to train our conscience.

Answer 3:
It will be a very practical subject, because many personal decisions depend on how we have trained our conscience. If we train it with the Bible, we will not only avoid what is bad but will also learn to choose what pleases Jehovah most.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY?

What is a Bible principle?

Answer 1:
A Bible principle is a fundamental truth that reflects Jehovah’s way of thinking and serves as the basis for his laws. It helps us to understand not only what Jehovah expects of us but also why he expects it.

Answer 2:
Bible principles are broad guides that can be applied in many different situations. Even though the Bible does not mention every modern case, its principles help us to make balanced and faithful decisions.

Answer 3:
We could say that a principle is the spiritual reason behind a law or a Bible account. When we identify it, we understand Jehovah better and can act with greater maturity.

What is the difference between principles and laws?

Answer 1:
Laws tend to be more specific and to apply to a particular situation. Principles, on the other hand, are broader and can be applied to different circumstances, cultures, and time periods. That is why principles never become outdated.

Answer 2:
A law can tell us exactly what to do or what not to do. A principle helps us to think and to apply Jehovah’s will even when there is no direct rule. That calls for more maturity and greater use of our power of reason.

Answer 3:
The example of the fire explains it well. The law was “do not touch the fire”, but the principle was “avoid getting burned”. The law can change as the child grows, but the principle of acting carefully remains valid.

What are some principles that Jesus taught in the Sermon on the Mount?

Answer 1:
Jesus taught that it is not enough to avoid murder; we must also root out hatred, wrath, and hurtful words. That principle helps us to be careful about what we think, what we say, and what we share about others.

Answer 2:
He also taught that it is not enough to avoid adultery; we must reject immoral thoughts and desires. That principle helps us to avoid pornography, immoral entertainment, or anything that could defile our mind.

Answer 3:
Jesus also taught that we must love our neighbor, even those who treat us badly. That principle helps us to avoid prejudice, to remain neutral in conflicts, and to forgive those who hurt us.

Why Are Bible Principles Important?
