Jehovah did not create them as robots or as animals guided only by instinct. He made them intelligent beings, able to reason, to obey out of love, and to show that they valued their friendship with him.

Answer 2:
Genesis 1:26, 27 says that humans were created in God’s image. That means Adam and Eve could reflect Jehovah’s qualities, such as love, justice, and wisdom. Free will allowed them to use those qualities to make decisions that would make their heavenly Father happy.

Answer 3:
This gift was very valuable because it gave them dignity. Jehovah allowed them to share in his purpose, care for the earth, and form a perfect human family. He did not control them by force; he trusted that they could choose to obey him out of gratitude and love.

1, 2. b) How should they have shown appreciation for that gift?

Answer 1:
They should have shown appreciation by obeying the simple standards Jehovah gave them. He did not impose a long list of rules on them. He gave them only reasonable instructions to care for the earth, fill the planet with humans, and respect the limit he had set for them.

Answer 2:
Genesis 2:16, 17 shows that Jehovah allowed them to eat from many trees but prohibited one. That standard was not a burden; it was an opportunity to show that they respected his authority. If they obeyed, they would be saying by their actions: “We trust you and want to make you happy.”

Answer 3:
Proverbs 23:15 reflects how Jehovah feels when his servants act wisely. Adam and Eve could have made Jehovah’s heart glad by using their freedom well. True appreciation would have been seen not just in words but in loyal, loving obedience.

3. How did Adam and Eve use their freedom of choice?

Answer 1:
Adam and Eve misused their freedom of choice. Instead of trusting Jehovah and obeying him, they let themselves be led by selfishness and chose to disobey. That shows that having freedom does not guarantee making good decisions; we must use it with love, humility, and respect for Jehovah.

Answer 2:
Genesis 3:1-7 shows that Eve listened to Satan’s lie and that Adam also chose to disobey. Both had the opportunity to remain loyal, but they chose to turn away from Jehovah. That decision brought very painful consequences for them and for all their descendants.

Answer 3:
Their example warns us that a wrong decision can affect far more than we imagine. Romans 5:12 says that through one man sin and death entered. That is why we need to train our conscience well and not rely solely on our own judgment.

4. a) According to Galatians 6:5, what must all of us do?

Answer 1:
All of us must take our own responsibility when making decisions. Galatians 6:5 says that each one will carry his own load of responsibility. This means that we cannot let others decide for us in personal matters, nor blame others if we choose wrongly.

Answer 2:
Today we make many decisions, some simple and others very complex. That is why, before deciding, we should recognize that we need Jehovah’s help. Proverbs 16:3 encourages us to commit our works to Jehovah, and that includes asking him for direction before we act.

Answer 3:
This text teaches us balance. We can ask for advice, listen to mature brothers, and look for Bible information, but in the end each one must make his own decision before Jehovah. That is why it is so important to have a well-trained conscience, because it will help us decide responsibly.

4. b) What other gift will we discuss in this article?

Answer 1:
The article discusses another gift that Jehovah has given us: the conscience. This gift helps us to distinguish between right and wrong. Since we have free will, we need an internal guide to direct us in using our freedom well.

Answer 2:
The conscience is a very valuable help because life does not always present easy decisions. Sometimes there is no specific rule for every situation. That is why a conscience well trained with Bible principles can help us see which decision would please Jehovah more.

Answer 3:
Hebrews 5:7 shows that even Jesus, though perfect, turned to Jehovah for help. We are imperfect, so we need that guidance even more. With great love, Jehovah has given us his Word, his spirit, and the conscience to help us make good decisions.

WHAT IS THE CONSCIENCE?

5. a) What is the conscience?

Answer 1:
The conscience is an internal sense of right and wrong. It is like an inner voice that evaluates what we think, say, and do. Although it does not replace the Bible, it can help us react when something is not right or when we should do what is correct.

Answer 2:
Romans 2:14, 15 explains that even people who do not know God’s Law have a conscience. That text says that their own thoughts accuse them or even excuse them. This shows that Jehovah put in humans an internal ability to evaluate their own conduct.

Answer 3:
We could compare the conscience to a judge we carry within us. If it is well trained, it can help us avoid wrong before we commit it and also motivate us to act well. But, like any judge, it needs a reliable standard; in our case, that standard is Jehovah’s Word.

5. b) How does the conscience help us? (Romans 2:14, 15).

Answer 1:
The conscience helps us by warning us when something is wrong. It can make us feel uncomfortable before we make a wrong decision or after we have done something we should not have. That reaction can be useful if it moves us to correct ourselves and draw closer to Jehovah.

Answer 2:
It also moves us to do what is right. It does not just tell us “that is wrong”; it can also motivate us to act with honesty, kindness, or courage even when no one is watching. A well-trained conscience helps us serve Jehovah from the heart.

Answer 3:
Romans 2:15 shows that the conscience accuses or excuses. That means that when we make a good decision, it can give us inner peace. And when we decide wrongly, it can help us recognize the mistake. But for it to work well, it must be trained by Jehovah.

6. What problem does our conscience have?

Answer 1:
The problem is that our conscience is imperfect, just as we are. It can be affected by our upbringing, culture, bad experiences, or wrong desires. That is why it is not enough to say “my conscience allows it”; we have to make sure it is well trained.

Answer 2:
The Bible mentions that the conscience can become weak, defiled, unfeeling, or even wicked. That is serious, because a conscience in poor condition can stop warning us of danger. It would be like an alarm that does not sound when there is a fire.

Answer 3:
First Peter 3:16 speaks of maintaining a good conscience. That involves caring for it, like a scale that needs to be well calibrated. If our conscience gets out of adjustment, we must adjust it again with the Bible, prayer, and holy spirit.

HOW TO TRAIN OUR CONSCIENCE

7, 8. a) What will help us train our conscience?

Answer 1:
Learning what is right and wrong in Jehovah’s eyes will help us. For that we need to read the Bible every day and study his laws. In that way we get to know his way of thinking better, and our conscience begins to react in harmony with his standards.

Answer 2:
Isaiah 55:9 shows that Jehovah’s thoughts are much higher than ours. That is why we do not want to rely only on our own opinion or on what society considers normal. By studying the Bible, we allow Jehovah to raise our way of thinking.

Answer 3:
We also need to look for principles, not just rules. Some Bible laws are specific, but principles give us a broader view of what Jehovah thinks and feels. The better we understand those principles, the better prepared our conscience will be to guide us.

7, 8. b) How do Bible principles help us? Give an example.

Answer 1:
Bible principles help us like reference points on a map. In life there are not always clear signs or detailed instructions for every situation. But principles show us whether we are going in the right direction and help us adjust our course if we stray.

Answer 2:
The article compares our life to a journey through the desert. The destination is Jehovah’s approval, the Bible is the map, and the principles are reference points. If we use them, we will be able to find our way even in difficult situations where there is no specific law.

Answer 3:
For example, the Bible may not mention an app, a social network, or a modern work situation. But principles such as modesty, honesty, or avoiding bad associations can guide us. In that way the conscience does not decide blindly but with clear spiritual reference points.

9. According to Romans 9:1, what other help do we have to train our conscience?

Answer 1:
We have the help of God’s holy spirit. It is not enough to accumulate information; we need Jehovah’s spirit to help us understand how he views things and to motivate us to act in harmony with his will.

Answer 2:
Romans 9:1 shows that Paul could speak of his conscience “in union with holy spirit.” That indicates that the conscience can be positively influenced by God’s spirit. When we let Jehovah guide us, our conscience becomes more reliable.

Answer 3:
Philippians 2:13 says that Jehovah gives us both the desire and the strength to act. That is very encouraging, because training the conscience does not depend only on our willpower. Jehovah can help us to want to do what is right and to have the energy to do it.

10. What must we do so that the holy spirit helps us? (Luke 11:10, 13).

Answer 1:
We must ask Jehovah for his holy spirit in prayer. It is not enough to want to make good decisions; we need to approach Jehovah with humility and acknowledge that without his help we could make mistakes. He is willing to give his spirit to those who ask him with faith.

Answer 2:
Luke 11:10, 13 teaches that whoever asks receives and that the heavenly Father will give holy spirit to those who ask him. This encourages us to be persistent. We can ask Jehovah to help us see a situation as he sees it and to act with courage.

Answer 3:
We must also let ourselves be guided by that spirit. It would be contradictory to ask for help and then ignore Bible principles. When we pray, study, and obey, we show that we want the holy spirit to mold our conscience and our way of thinking.

11. a) What should be our main goal in life?

Answer 1:
Our main goal should be to always seek Jehovah’s approval. If we have that goal clearly in mind, it will be easier to make right decisions, even when the pressure is strong or when others do not understand our way of acting.

Answer 2:
Proverbs 8:34, 35 shows that whoever listens to Jehovah’s wisdom gains his favor. That is why, before deciding, we can ask ourselves: “Will this draw me closer to Jehovah? Will it help me keep his approval?” That question can protect us greatly.

Answer 3:
Having the goal of pleasing Jehovah also trains our heart. We do not decide thinking only about what is allowed but about how Jehovah feels. A well-trained conscience does not look for the limit of what is acceptable but for what honors our Father more.

11. b) Why must we make sure that our conscience is well trained and works properly?

Answer 1:
Because many decisions in life are not mentioned specifically in the Bible. They may be related to entertainment, work, studies, friendships, or family matters. If the conscience is not well trained, we could justify something that Jehovah does not approve of.

Answer 2:
Second Corinthians 1:12 speaks of conducting ourselves with holiness and sincerity. To live that way in a complicated world, we need a conscience that works well. If it is trained by Jehovah, it will help us act with cleanness and honesty even when others do the opposite.

Answer 3:
A poorly trained conscience can seem calm even when we are making bad decisions. That is why we should examine it frequently. Just as a damaged compass can lead us down the wrong path, a conscience out of adjustment can lead us away from Jehovah if we do not correct it.

12. What will help us see whether our conscience is leading us in the right direction? (Ephesians 5:10).

Answer 1:
Meditating on what we read in God’s Word will help us. It is not enough to read quickly. We should ask ourselves what principles appear, what they reveal about Jehovah, and how they can help us make decisions in daily life.

Answer 2:
Ephesians 5:10 says that we should keep on making sure of what is acceptable to the Lord. That means we should analyze our decisions before making them. Asking ourselves “will this please Jehovah?” helps us verify whether our conscience is well oriented.

Answer 3:
Hebrews 5:14 speaks of having our powers of discernment trained. Each time we meditate and apply a principle, we are training our conscience. If we detect that a decision is taking us off the right path, we can readjust before suffering consequences.

13. What mistake of the Israelites should we avoid?

Answer 1:
We should avoid first making a decision and then looking for Bible principles to justify it. That would be using the Bible to confirm what we already want to do, instead of letting Jehovah truly guide us.

Answer 2:
The Israelites in Jeremiah’s day asked for direction, but they had already decided what they wanted to do. When Jehovah gave them an answer they did not like, they rejected it. Jeremiah chapters 42 and 43 show that this attitude led them to disaster.

Answer 3:
This example teaches us to be sincere when we seek guidance. Before deciding, we should ask ourselves: “Am I willing to accept whatever Jehovah says, even if it is not what I preferred?” That humility protects our conscience and our friendship with God.

14. Why should we apply Bible principles when making decisions?

Answer 1:
We should apply them because in that way we let the holy spirit guide us. When we make decisions in harmony with Jehovah’s principles, we show that we want to please him and that we value his help. That strengthens our conscience and our relationship with him.

Answer 2:
Matthew 7:24-29 compares the one who listens to and obeys Jesus’ words to a man who builds on rock. Applying Bible principles is building our life on a solid foundation. The decisions may not always be easy, but they will be safer.

Answer 3:
If we ignore Bible principles, we could grieve the holy spirit, as Ephesians 4:30 warns. That would be very dangerous, because we need Jehovah’s spirit to have strength. On the other hand, applying his principles keeps our conscience sensitive and well oriented.

HOW TO FIND THE PRINCIPLES WE NEED

15, 16. a) How can we find the principles we need?

Answer 1:
We can find them by using the study tools that Jehovah’s organization gives us. These tools help us locate texts, articles, and principles related to specific subjects. In that way we do not have to depend only on our memory or on an improvised search.

Answer 2:
For example, the Study Guide for Jehovah’s Witnesses can lead us to information on specific subjects. If someone asks why smoking is wrong, we can look up the subject “Tobacco” and analyze the Bible principles that show how Jehovah views that habit.

Answer 3:
These tools are evidence of Jehovah’s care. They help us train the conscience with principles, not just with opinions. By using them, we learn to reason with the Bible and to help others reach conclusions that please Jehovah.

15, 16. b) What Bible principles can help a student to stop smoking?

Answer 1:
One of the principles is that we do not want to become slaves to something that leads to death. Romans 6:16 shows that a person can become a slave of whatever he obeys. Tobacco creates dependence, and a Christian wants to be free to serve Jehovah.

Answer 2:
Another principle is found at 2 Corinthians 7:1, where we are encouraged to cleanse ourselves of everything that defiles body and spirit. Smoking harms the body, which is a gift from Jehovah. Out of love and respect for him, we want to avoid habits that dirty or destroy our health.

Answer 3:
We should also think of others. Matthew 22:39 says that we should love our neighbor, and 1 Corinthians 10:24 encourages us to seek the benefit of others. Smoking can harm those around us. These principles help the student to see the matter from Jehovah’s point of view.

17. How can a couple who are Witnesses find Bible principles that help them plan their wedding?

Answer 1:
They can use the Study Guide and look for information about weddings and receptions. There they will find articles with principles that help in planning a wedding that honors Jehovah, is dignified, and reflects good Christian judgment.

Answer 2:
First Corinthians 10:31 says that we should do all things for God’s glory. That principle can guide many decisions: the clothing, the music, the atmosphere, the guests, and the reception. The key question would be: “Will this bring honor to Jehovah?”

Answer 3:
Other principles are also useful. First Timothy 2:9 speaks of modesty, 1 Corinthians 14:40 speaks of doing things decently and by arrangement, and Galatians 5:21 warns against wild parties. In that way the couple can make balanced decisions without needing a rule for every detail.

18, 19. a) What other tool can help us?

Answer 1:
Another very useful tool is the book Bible Texts for Christian Living. This book organizes texts by subject and helps us find Bible principles for specific situations. It is practical because many decisions require comparing several texts and reasoning on them.

Answer 2:
This tool can help us when we have doubts about entertainment, celebrations, neutrality, friendships, or any other matter. Instead of deciding out of custom or social pressure, we can look for texts that help us think as Jehovah does.

Answer 3:
It is especially useful for family worship or personal study. We can choose a subject and look for which principles appear. In that way we train the conscience little by little, and when a real decision comes up, we will be better prepared.

18, 19. b) What principles related to the subject of celebrations can we find in this book?

Answer 1:
We can find principles that help us avoid celebrations related to false religion. First Corinthians 10:21 shows that we cannot share in “the table of Jehovah” and the table of demons. That principle helps us keep our worship clean.

Answer 2:
We also find principles about not joining in practices that do not please Jehovah. Second Corinthians 6:14-18 encourages us to separate ourselves from what is unclean. This can help us decide whether or not to take part in religious or patriotic celebrations or ones that give excessive honor to humans.

Answer 3:
Ephesians 5:10, 11 encourages us to make sure of what is acceptable to the Lord and not to share in the unfruitful works of darkness. This principle not only tells us what to avoid but also helps us analyze the origin, meaning, and spiritual effect of a celebration.

BOX: Can We Identify the Principles?

Comment 1

The box encourages us to use Bible Texts for Christian Living as a study project. I find it very practical because it not only gives us answers but also teaches us to look for principles ourselves. In that way the conscience is trained more deeply.

Comment 2

The subjects that appear, such as alcohol, entertainment, honesty, neutrality, forgiveness, or pornography, are very real matters. Many Christians face decisions related to them. If we study those subjects before pressure arises, we will be better prepared to decide well.

Comment 3

This box can also be very useful for family worship. Each week we could choose a subject, look for texts, and comment on which principles appear. In that way everyone learns to reason with the Bible, not just to repeat a prepared answer.

COMMENT ON THE PICTURE IN PARAGRAPH 8

Comment 1

The picture of the hiker with the map helps us understand that the Bible guides us in life. In a desert, a person needs reference points so as not to get lost. In a similar way, in this world we need Bible principles that show us whether we are heading toward Jehovah’s approval.

Comment 2

The map does not walk for the hiker, but it shows him the right direction. The same happens with the Bible: Jehovah does not make decisions for us, but he gives us the guidance we need. Then each one must use his ability to reason and take his own responsibility before Jehovah.

Comment 3

We can also see that, if someone strays, he can look at the map and correct his course. That encourages us because, if we detect that our conscience has gotten out of adjustment, we can return to the Bible, look for principles, and readjust our way of thinking.

LET US SHOW THAT WE HAVE A WELL-TRAINED CONSCIENCE

20. How do we show that we have trained our conscience well?

Answer 1:
We show it by using the gift of freedom of choice well. A well-trained conscience helps us make decisions that honor Jehovah and are in harmony with his will, even when no one is watching us or when others do not understand our decision.

Answer 2:
Second Timothy 3:16, 17 shows that God’s Word is useful for teaching, correcting, and equipping us. If we let the Bible train our conscience, our decisions will increasingly reflect Jehovah’s way of thinking.

Answer 3:
We also show it by constantly asking for holy spirit and letting ourselves be guided by it. Hebrews 4:12 says that God’s Word is alive and exerts power. When we allow that Word to reach the heart, our conscience becomes more sensitive and reliable.

WHAT WOULD YOU ANSWER?

What is the conscience?

Answer 1:
The conscience is an internal sense of right and wrong. It is like an inner judge that accuses us or excuses us for what we think and do. But for it to work well, it must be trained by Jehovah’s Word.

Answer 2:
The conscience helps us use our freedom of choice well. It can warn us when something is wrong and motivate us to do what is right. However, since we are imperfect, we should not rely on it if it is not well trained.

Answer 3:
It is a gift from Jehovah that gives us dignity and responsibility. We are not programmed machines; we can decide. But for our decisions to please Jehovah, we need our conscience to be in harmony with his principles.

How can we train our conscience?

Answer 1:
We can train it by reading the Bible every day, studying Jehovah’s laws, and looking for principles that help us understand his way of thinking. In that way our conscience learns to react according to what Jehovah approves.

Answer 2:
We also need to ask for holy spirit. Jehovah can help us understand his will, give us the desire to do what is right, and give us strength to act. A well-trained conscience does not depend only on knowledge but also on God’s help.

Answer 3:
In addition, we should meditate before making decisions and use study tools. We do not want to decide first and then look for texts to justify our opinion. We want to seek Jehovah’s guidance first and then act in harmony with it.

How can Bible principles help us make decisions?

Answer 1:
Bible principles help us like reference points on a map. Even though the Bible does not mention every modern situation, its principles show us the right direction and help us see whether a decision draws us closer to or further from Jehovah.

Answer 2:
They help us make decisions on subjects such as entertainment, work, studies, friendships, celebrations, or personal habits. Instead of asking only “is it prohibited?”, we ask: “What Bible principle applies here, and what will Jehovah think of this decision?”

Answer 3:
They also protect our conscience. If we apply principles, our conscience stays sensitive and well calibrated. In that way we can make decisions that bring honor to Jehovah, give us inner peace, and help us stay on the right path.

How to Use Bible Principles to Train the Conscience Theme scripture: Galatians 6:5: “Each one will carry his own load.” 1, 2. a) What gift did Adam and Eve receive?
