They speak for sure, do not intimidate themselves easily and face problems without hesitation. But Jeremiah’s story teaches us something very animating: to be brave you don’t have to be born with a strong personality.

When Jehovah appointed him a prophet, Jeremiah tried to apologize, saying he could not speak and that he was only a boy. However, he eventually came to announce the messages of Jehovah so firmly that his reputation for bravery remained for centuries.

That doesn’t mean I never felt fear, pain or discouragement. Jeremiah was insulted, beaten, locked up and persecuted. At one point he even thought of stopping preaching. But he managed to move on because he fully trusted Jehovah and understood that the message he was carrying was too important to keep it to him.

Let us see first that Jeremiah was persecuted for carrying the message of condemnation from Jehovah.

Let us read Jeremiah 20:2 and 8 .

Then Pasjur struck the prophet Jeremiah and put him in the trap that was at the Upper Gate of Benjamin, which was in the house of Jehovah. For every time I speak, I have to shout and announce, “Violence and destruction.” And the words of Jehovah have caused people to insult me and mock me all day long.

Pasjur did not merely reject the message. He beat Jeremiah and put him in the trap. This instrument not only restricted movement and caused pain. He also publicly exposed the person to humiliation. Jeremiah was there, probably for hours, before the eyes and mockeries of those who passed by.

And why did you get that deal? Not because he had committed a crime, but because he was communicating faithfully the words of Jehovah. I had to announce that violence and destruction would come as a result of the people’s disobedience. It was a necessary message, but it was not nice to hear.

Jeremiah acknowledged that people insulted him and mocked him all day long. We can’t think that it didn’t affect him. He was a human being with feelings. Cruel words, rejection and humiliation caused him pain.

Moreover, his work did not last a few weeks. For more than sixty-five years he had to keep transmitting messages that most did not want to hear. Many considered him a catastrophic, someone who only announced misfortunes. There were even those who accused him of weakening the people.

However, Jeremiah was not inventing the message or enjoying announcing calamities. I was obeying Jehovah. I knew warning people could give them a chance to repent and save their lives.

We too can find opposition to preaching. They may not beat us or put us in a trap, but they can mock us, treat us with contempt or say that our message is negative. Some co-workers or studies could ridicule our beliefs. Even a relative can try to stop us talking about Jehovah.

When it happens, let’s remember Jeremiah. Rejection doesn’t mean we’re doing something wrong. Many times, people reject the message because they don’t want to change. The important thing is that we continue to speak with respect, kindness and courage.

However, the pressure came to affect Jeremiah so much that, during a moment of deep discouragement, he thought of surrendering.

That’s the second point: Jeremiah was discouraged and thought about stopping talking.

Read Jeremiah 20:9 .

Then I said, “I will not talk about him and I will not speak in his name anymore.” But his words turned into my heart like a burning fire enclosed in my bones, and I got tired of containing them; I couldn’t bear it anymore.

Jeremiah came to say, “I will not speak any more in his name.” After so many insults, mockery and ill-treatment, he must have felt that he could no longer continue. Maybe he thought being silent would avoid suffering.

This detail makes your example even more valuable. Jeremiah was not brave because he was never discouraged. He was brave because, although he was discouraged, he did not allow that feeling to beat him.

Something similar may happen to us too. Maybe we’ll go out and preach and find indifference or rejection. Maybe we’ve been trying to help someone without seeing results. Or maybe an unpleasant experience will cause us to lose enthusiasm.

In those moments we could think: Why follow? Nobody listens. I’m not able to speak well. Maybe it’s better to let others do it. To feel discouragement does not mean that we have lost faith. But we must prevent discouragement from deciding for us.

What helped Jeremiah? The message of Jehovah became a burning fire within him. He had filled his heart and mind so much with the words of God that he could not keep them. He tried to contain them, but he couldn’t.

Imagine a closed container containing something getting hotter. Pressure increases until it is impossible to keep it inside. Something similar Jeremiah felt. He understood that the words of Jehovah were true, urgent and able to save lives. That’s why, although he was emotionally exhausted, he couldn’t remain silent.

This teaches us that the courage to preach does not come only from willpower. He feeds on the love for Jehovah, of the conviction that his Word is true and of sincere interest in people.

The more we study the Bible, meditate on its promises and understand the meaning of good news, the more we want to share it. If we feel that our enthusiasm is weakening, we may need to refill the heart with the words of Jehovah.

The third point is that Jeremiah was able to continue preaching courageously because Jehovah gave him strength and because he knew his words were very important.

Let us remember the second part of Jeremiah 20:9 .

But his words turned into my heart like a burning fire enclosed in my bones, and I grew tired of containing them; I could no longer bear it.

And let us now read Jeremiah 20:11 .

But Jehovah was with me as a fearsome warrior. That’s why those who persecute me will stumble and not win. They will have a great shame, for they will not get away with it. His humiliation will last forever, never forgotten.

Jeremiah did not say, I am strong and I am not afraid of anyone. He said that Jehovah was with him as a fearsome warrior. Its value did not come from exaggerated self-confidence. He came from knowing who was by his side.

When he received his commission, Jeremiah was undecided and shy. He tried to turn her down saying he couldn’t speak. So the extraordinary strength he later showed was not coming from birth. The Jehovah was helping to overcome his fears.

Over the course of more than sixty-five years, Jeremiah continued to firmly announce the divine judgments. He became so well known for his courage that, six centuries later, when people saw the fearlessness of Jesus, some thought he could be the Risen Jeremiah.

How did that insecure young man come to become such a brave prophet? Trusting fully in Jehovah. Every time he faced opposition, he found that Jehovah did not abandon him. His enemies could beat him, insult or imprison him, but they could not prevent God’s will from being fulfilled.

We have the same source of value. Jehovah does not expect us to face preaching or opposition by relying solely on our personality. We can ask for a holy spirit, wisdom and serenity. When we feel nervous when talking to someone, Jehovah can help us remember a proper idea or text.

It also strengthens us to remember that the Bible is not the fruit of human wisdom. His message was transmitted by holy spirit and remains alive and powerful. When we study it with interest, that message influences our thoughts, our motivations and our feelings.

That’s why it’s important not to just prepare what we’re going to say in preaching. We must allow the message to come first to our own heart. When we are convinced that the Kingdom is the only solution to human problems, we speak more safely. When we meditate on the hope of the resurrection, we wish to comfort those who suffer. And when we understand how much Jehovah loves people, we feel the desire to help them know him.

We may never consider ourselves particularly brave people. Jeremiah didn’t start being it either. But he learned that courage is not about not feeling fear. It consists of trusting Jehovah and doing the right thing in spite of fear.

When someone mocks, let’s remember that Jeremiah endured insults for years. When we feel discouraged, let’s remember that he too thought about giving up. And when we doubt our abilities, let us remember that Jehovah was with him as a fearsome warrior.

The words of Jehovah are still too important to keep them. They can give hope, comfort and life to those who hear them. Therefore, let us continue to fill our hearts with the biblical message and trust that Jehovah will give us the necessary strength.

Thus, although we feel fear or discouragement, we can imitate Jeremiah and continue to preach courageously.

Theme: He Preached Courageously There are people who seem brave by nature.
