DISCURSO<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Subject: If we pay attention to Jehovah, we will do well<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

We live in a world full of voices. All the time someone tells us what to think, what to do, what to prioritize and how to live. Networks, society, education, the working environment, even our own emotions, try to lead our way. But the big question is, who are we going to listen to?<\/strong> The answer that Jehovah gives in Isaiah 48 is clear and very loving. He not only tells us what to do; he also explains why doing so will always be the best thing for us. In fact, today’s theme sums it up very well: if we pay attention to Jehovah, we will do well<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Let us look first at what Isaiah says 48:17. Jehovah declares, I am Jehovah, your God, who teaches you by your own good, who guides you in the way in which you must walk. What a nice way to introduce yourself. Jehovah is utterly saying, I am thy God, so I obey me. He adds something that reaches our hearts: teach you for your own good.<\/strong> That is, everything that Jehovah teaches us has a good, practical and loving goal. It never teaches us to complicate our lives, to take away our joy or to impose unnecessary burdens on us. Quite the opposite. Jehovah teaches to protect us, guide us, and help us live better.<\/p>\n\n

That tells us a lot about his personality. Jehovah, the Creator of all that exists, is the Magnificent Instructor of his servants. No one knows better than him how we are made, what we need and what suits us. When someone makes a tool, they know what their correct use is. And if I followed the manufacturer’s instructions, that tool would work well and last longer. But if someone decides to use it their way, sooner or later it will end up damaging it. Well, something like that happens to us. Jehovah created us. He knows how the human being thinks, what gives him true happiness, what hurts him, what strengthens him and what path leads him to a meaningful life.<\/p>\n\n

Moreover, Jehovah has not left us in the dark. He has taught us his name, his purposes and his laws through revelations. All this is found in his Word, the Bible. Therefore the Bible is not only a book; it is the means by which Jehovah continues to teach his people today. In it we find principles, examples, warnings and comfort. And not just that. Jehovah also uses his holy spirit to teach us. Jesus explained that the spirit would help to remember and understand the things of God. So Jehovah does not teach in a cold or distant way. He teaches us with his Word, with his spirit and through the congregation.<\/p>\n\n

Now, here is a very important idea: Jehovah teaches, but we have to decide whether or not we pay attention to him. And that brings us to the second point. Isaiah 48:18 says, “If you only listen to my commandments.” Then your peace would become the same as a river, and your righteousness, like the waves of the sea. Notice how the verse begins: “Yes only….”<\/strong> It’s an expression that conveys feeling. Jehovah speaks not as a tough ruler, but as a loving Father who knows what is good for us and desires from our hearts that we choose well. He’s saying, “I wish you heard me. I hope you take my advice seriously, because I know how good you’ll do if you do<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n

This reminds us that Jehovah created us with free will. Unlike animals, which act mainly by instinct, we can choose. We can decide who we listen to, what values we embrace and what path we follow. Jehovah does not compel us to obey him. He could do it, because he has power for it, but he doesn’t want forced servants. He wants people who love him, to trust him and to choose to follow him. That is why in the Bible he invites us to choose life, to listen to his voice and to obey his commandments. That invitation only makes sense because we really have the freedom to decide.<\/p>\n\n

And here we should ask ourselves with sincerity: are we choosing to pay attention to Jehovah?<\/strong> Because it’s not enough to say we believe in him. Paying attention implies more. It means that when Jehovah speaks through his Word, we listen to him with humility. It means we don’t argue with their rules or try to adapt them to our taste. It means that when their advice collides with what the world promotes, we choose to trust Jehovah.<\/p>\n\n

Let’s think of some situations of daily life. For example, a young man has to decide what goals he will pursue. The world says to him: The first thing is your career, your money, your image, your success. Jehovah teaches him something different: let him first put the Kingdom, to take care of his spirituality and to build his life on lasting values. Or think of an adult Christian facing economic pressure. The atmosphere may push him to accept schedules, jobs or commitments that take him away from meetings and his service to Jehovah. But Jehovah teaches him to trust, to maintain balance and not to sacrifice the spiritual for the material. Or imagine someone who’s going through a disappointment, an injustice or an emotional wound. The heart says to him, “It’s right, you hold grudge, take distance. But Jehovah teaches to forgive, to trust in him and to act with righteousness and love.<\/p>\n\n

In each case, the question is the same: who am I going to listen to?<\/strong>. And the answer will mark our future. Therefore Isaiah 48:18 does not present obedience as a simple obligation, but as a decision that brings blessing. Jehovah doesn’t want to steal anything from us; he wants to avoid us too much pain. When he sends us something, there’s always love behind us. When it sets limits on us, there’s always protection behind us. When he corrects us, there’s always a greater good behind us.<\/p>\n\n

And that brings us to the third point: if we pay attention to Jehovah, our peace will become even more like a river, and our righteousness, like the waves of the sea<\/strong>. This is one of Isaiah’s most beautiful images. Jehovah promises two clear benefits. The first is peace. He doesn’t talk about a superficial or passing peace. The Hebrew word that translates “peace” can convey the idea of health, safety, well-being, friendship or fullness. It’s a complete peace. And Jehovah says that peace would be like a river<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Let’s think of that comparison for a moment. A river does not stumble. He doesn’t show up one day yes and another doesn’t. It doesn’t depend on changing emotions. Its course is continuous, serene and abundant. For Jehovah promises that, if we pay attention to him, our peace can be like this: stable, deep, constant. That doesn’t mean we won’t have any problems. Jehovah’s servants also face sickness, economic hardship, opposition, anxiety or loss. But it does mean that, even in the middle of those tests, we can enjoy an inner calm that the world does not understand. Because we know who guides us, why we live and where we’re going.<\/p>\n\n

How many people today wouldn’t give anything for having that kind of peace? The world seeks peace on vacation, entertainment, money, relationships, medication or distractions. And some of those things may bring temporary relief, but not lasting peace. True peace is born of a good relationship with Jehovah and a clean conscience before him. When you know you are on the right track, even if you have problems, you feel a tranquility that does not depend on the circumstances.<\/p>\n\n

The second benefit which Jehovah promises is that our righteousness will be like the waves of the sea<\/strong>. What an interesting image. If one stares at the sea from the beach, see one wave and then another, and another, and another. There is continuity, permanence, regularity. The waves keep coming. For Jehovah is saying that our way of living according to the right thing can be this constant and lasting. Not an occasional one. Not a spiritual streak. Not loyalty for seasons. Jehovah can help us maintain a course right in time.<\/p>\n\n

And that’s very cheerful, because sometimes we could think: I want to do the right thing, but I’m imperfect. What if I can’t stand it? What if I fail? What if I get weak with the years? Jehovah does not promise immediate perfection, but he does promise to sustain those who strive to obey him. As Psalm 55:22 says, he will never allow the righteous to be definitively shaken. If we continue to listen to him, Jehovah will help us to stand firm.<\/p>\n\n

So paying attention to Jehovah is not a loss; it’s a gain. It is not a more limited life; it is a better guided life. It is not a sad road; it is a safe way. He teaches us for our own good, guides us on the path in which we must walk and promises us lasting peace and justice.<\/p>\n\n

Therefore, at the end of this speech, it would be good for everyone to ask a personal question: am I really paying attention to Jehovah?<\/strong>. Not only on big issues, but also in small ones: in my priorities, in my way of speaking, in my daily decisions, in what I see, in what I want, in how I react, in how I use my time. For the more attention we pay to Jehovah, the better it will go to us.So let us not see his commandments as a burden. Let’s see them as what they really are: the loving guide of the best Instructor that exists. Jehovah knows exactly where we should walk. And if we choose to hear it, we will personally check the truth of his words: our peace will become the same as a river, and our righteousness, like the waves of the sea.
