How did the Apostle Paul feel sometimes, and why is it possible that we identify with him? (Romans 7:21-24).

Answer:

Sometimes Paul felt unhappy because he lived a very real internal struggle. He wanted to do the will of Jehovah, but he still had an imperfect nature that pushed him in the opposite direction. That frustrated him, and it’s easy to identify with him because we also want to do the right thing, but sometimes we fail.

Answer:

Besides, Paul was not a spiritual machine without emotion. He was a faithful servant, yes, but also a sensitive man, who felt guilt, sadness and frustration. That encourages us, because it reminds us that having negative feelings does not mean that we are weak or that Jehovah is disappointed in us.

Answer:

Romans 7:21-24 shows that Paul was very sincere to himself. He didn’t hide his struggle or pretend everything was okay. And that helps us a lot, because sometimes we also feel that inner battle between what we want to be and what we still find difficult to change.

3. What will we see in this article? (See also the important idea.)

Answer:

We’ll see why Paul sometimes felt unhappy. The article explains that it was not because of a lack of faith, but because of very concrete factors: its past, a thorn in the flesh – and the constant struggle against its imperfections.

Answer:

We’ll also see what helped him not to be dominated by those negative feelings. Although Paul had moments of sadness or frustration, he did not get caught there; he found spiritual ways to regain balance and continue to serve Jehovah with joy.

Answer:

And the most useful thing for us is that we will analyze what we can do to win that same battle. I mean, we’ll not only see Paul’s problem, but also the tools he used and how we can apply them when we feel bad inside.

4. What is one of the reasons why Paul had negative feelings?

Answer:

One reason was his past. Before becoming a Christian, Paul did very serious things that he later very regretted. For example, he approved Stephen’s murder and fiercely persecuted Christians, so it is not uncommon for those memories to hurt him (Acts 7:58; 8:1, 3).

Answer:

When a person really loves Jehovah, looking back and remembering serious mistakes can hurt a lot. Paul knew that Jehovah had forgiven him, but that does not mean that memories would disappear automatically. Some emotional wounds take longer to heal.

Answer:

That also helps us to be understanding with ourselves. Sometimes, even though Jehovah has already forgiven us, we still feel sadness for things of the past. Paul’s case shows that this struggle can exist even in a faithful and very spiritual Christian.

5. How did Paul feel remembering his past?

Answer:

Paul sometimes felt guilty to remembering what he had done before he knew the truth. Therefore he said that he did not deserve to be called an apostle, because he had persecuted the congregation of God (1 Corinthians 15:9). He wasn’t faking humility; his past really hurt.

Answer:

Over the years, those feelings didn’t quite disappear. Even later he said that he considered himself a lower than the least of all the saints, and recalled that he had previously been blasphemous, persecuting and insolent (Ephesians 3:8; 1 Timothy 1:13). That shows that he still felt weight in consciousness.

Answer:

Imagine him visiting congregations where perhaps there were relatives of people he chased help to better understand his pain. Surely some memories removed his heart. Still, he didn’t let that guilt paralyze him forever, and that already leaves us with a big lesson.

6. What else did he make Paul suffer? (See also the note).

Answer:

Another thing that made him suffer was what he called a thorn in the flesh. (2 Corinthians 12:7). He did not explain exactly what it was, and perhaps Jehovah allowed us not to know so that we could identify with him more easily, whatever our test.

Answer:

The important thing is, it wasn’t a small nuisance. His words suggest that it was something painful, persistent and humiliating. He could be physical, emotional or otherwise, but he was clearly a burden that made him suffer a lot.

Answer:

That is also comforting, because some of Jehovah’s servants cope with problems that do not disappear quickly. Sometimes a person prays, struggles, and keeps going, but the “thorn” remains. Paul’s example shows that we can serve Jehovah faithfully even while carrying a constant burden.

7. How did they make Paul feel his imperfections? (Romans 7:18, 19).

Answer:

His imperfections frustrated him very much. Romans 7:18, 19 shows that Paul wanted to do the good, but he did not always manage to act as he desired. That infighting made him feel powerless at times.

Answer:

He did not resign himself to his defects or justify them. He fought seriously against them, as shown also 1 Corinthians 9:27. But precisely by taking his service to Jehovah so seriously, it hurt him to see that he kept stumbling in some areas.

Answer:

That’s very human and very Christian at the same time. The more you love Jehovah, the more it bothers you to fail him. So Paul’s frustration was not a sign of spiritual weakness, but proof that he had a sincere desire to please God.

8. What surely did Paul do to fight against his imperfections?

Answer:

Surely he was very much thought of how the holy spirit could help him fight against his bad tendencies. In his letters he spoke several times of the struggle between the desires of the flesh and the guidance of the spirit, so it is clear that it was a matter that worked seriously (Romans 8:13; Galatians 5:16, 17).

Answer:

He also sought guidance in the Scriptures and thought of concrete changes. Paul did not treat imperfections superficially; he analyzed what he should avoid and what qualities he should cultivate to please Jehovah. That shows a very practical approach.

Answer:

And he certainly applied in his own life the advice he gave to others. He wasn’t one of those who teach one thing and do another. His example teaches us that fighting negative feelings is not enough to feel remorse; real spiritual action must be taken.

9, 10. What helped Paul fight against negative feelings? (Ephesians 1:7; see also the image).

Answer:

One thing that helped Paul a lot was to focus on positive things. He was glad to hear good news from the congregations, to have faithful friends and to have the approval of Jehovah. This shows that, when negative thoughts came to him, he did not stay around him; he sought to change the mental approach (2 Corinthians 7:6, 7; 2 Timothy 1:3, 4).

Answer:

He was also very helpful to meditate on the rescue. Paul did not see the sacrifice of Jesus as a cold doctrine, but as a personal gift from Jehovah to him. That convinced him that his sins had been forgiven and that Jehovah would continue to treat him with mercy (Ephesians 1:7; Romans 7:24, 25).

Answer:

Thanks to this, Paul was able to continue to serve God with joy despite his past and imperfections. He did not deny his mistakes, but did not allow them to erase the most important reality: Jehovah had forgiven him and kept loving him. That balanced vision held him very much.

11. Why do you encourage us to the example of Paul?

Answer:

It encourages us because it shows us that we are not the only ones who fight with negative feelings. Sometimes we think that a strong Christian never feels bad about himself, but Paul shows the opposite: even a very faithful servant can have an intense inner battle.

Answer:

It also comforts to see that Jehovah knew Paul’s struggle perfectly and yet he continued to use it with affection. That reminds us that Jehovah is not outchanted by our inner struggles; he understands them better than anyone else and knows what it costs us.

Answer:

And, above all, it encourages us because Paul did not let himself be defeated. He had tough days, but he didn’t allow his negative thoughts to define his entire spiritual life. That gives us hope: we too can go forward with the help of Jehovah.

12. How does it help us in our fight against negative feelings to maintain a good program of spiritual activities?

Answer:

It helps us because it keeps us focused on the positive and the spiritual. Just as the body improves when it feeds well, rests and exercises, our mind improves when we have biblical reading, prayer, preaching and meetings on a regular basis.

Answer:

A good spiritual program does not eliminate all the negative feelings at once, but it does take away strength. When we are spiritually active, we have less mental space to get caught up in dark thoughts or to turn ourselves around.

Answer:

In addition, Romans 12:11, 12 shows that keeping us busy in the service of Jehovah strengthens the spirit. Spiritual activity reminds us who we are, who we serve and what hope we have. That raises the heart a lot when we’re low.

13. How has it helped some brothers to maintain a good program of spiritual activities?

Answer:

In John’s case, maintaining the spiritual program helped him not to sink due to cancer diagnosis. Although he was exhausted and went through a tough test, he continued to go to meetings, preaching and having family worship. That gave him strength and stability.

Answer:

Eliza said that when she goes to meetings and does her personal studio she becomes more convinced that Jehovah listens to her and loves her very much. That makes her happy. It is a very nice idea: spiritual activity not only occupies, it also confirms the love of Jehovah in our hearts.

Answer:

And Nolan and Diane said that, even when they’re discouraged, they strive to maintain their spiritual program because Jehovah always ends up helping them regain the right attitude. This teaches that spiritual constancy is not a waste of time; often it is just what saves us from discouragement.

15. Explain with one example what more we may have to do to overcome negative feelings.

Answer:

The article sets the example of back pain. Walking can help, yes, but sometimes it’s not enough; you may need to look for information or even go to the doctor. With negative feelings something may happen: maintaining the spiritual routine helps a lot, but sometimes you need to go further.

Answer:

That means we may have to investigate a particular topic in the Bible and our publications, or even talk to a mature brother. It is not always enough to say I will move on; sometimes you need to identify the problem more precisely.

Answer:

The lesson is that we must not settle for suffering in silence. If negative thoughts persist, additional measures may need to be taken and specific help sought. That is not weakness; it is wisdom and humility.

16. What will help us see why we have negative thoughts? (Psalm 139:1-4, 23, 24).

Answer:

It will help us ask Jehovah to help us understand what we really need. David knew that Jehovah knew him thoroughly, so he asked him to examine his heart and help him detect his distressing thoughts (Psalms 139:23, 24).

Answer:

In addition to praying, you should ask us sincere questions: What really worries me? What triggers do these thoughts activate? Am I feeding them around over and over again? Sometimes the simple fact of identifying the origin already takes off some of the weight.

Answer:

That’s very useful because not all negative feelings come from the same thing. One can be affected by guilt, the other tiredness, another fear or comparison. Asking Jehovah discernment helps us not to treat all problems as if they were equal.

17. What topics should we include in our personal study? (See also the image).

Answer:

Issues that respond directly to our need should be studied. For example, Paul was greatly helped to meditate on the ransom and forgiveness of Jehovah. If we are punished by guilt or feeling of unpeed, those issues can be heart medicine.

Answer:

It is also very useful to study facets of the personality of Jehovah, such as his mercy, his loyal love and his compassion. When one knows better what Jehovah is like, negative thoughts lose strength, because they stop mastering the lies that one tells oneself.

Answer:

And it’s not just about reading articles, it’s about taking out personal apps. Making a list of topics that help us and having it at hand can be very practical. Thus, when a negative thought comes, we already know what spiritual food to seek to combat it (Philippians 4:8).

18. What study projects have been useful to some siblings?

Answer:

Eliza was helped to study on Job, because he identified with someone who had one test after another and still did not stop leaning on Jehovah. Seeing Job continued to trust God even without understanding everything gave him much strength (Job 42:1-6).

Answer:

Diane and her husband have been helped to study the book Let’s approach Jehovah. That has led them to imagine Jehovah as a patient potter who gives them affectionately, rather than looking only like flawed and disappointing people.

Answer:

That teaches a very nice lesson: not all of us need exactly the same study project. The important thing is to choose issues that bring us closer to Jehovah and that respond to our concrete struggle. When the study touches the heart, it really strengthens and heals.

19. How will we feel sometimes, but what can we be sure of?

Answer:

Sometimes, even if we have a good spiritual program and a study adapted to our needs, we will continue to feel discouraged or even miserable, like Paul. That can happen, and it doesn’t mean we’re failing spiritually.

Answer:

But we can be sure of something: with Jehovah’s help, those negative thoughts and feelings will not dominate us. Jehovah is stronger than any inner struggle, and can help us maintain balance even if there are darker days.

Answer:

We can also be sure that there will be many more good days than bad, because we have the friendship of Jehovah and a clean conscience before him. That security gives a lot of peace: we are not fighting alone or hopelessly.

20. What do we want to do?

Answer:

We want to continue to do everything we can to fail to beat by the negative feelings related to our past, our problems or our imperfections. It is not a question of denying that they exist, but of keeping them at bay with the help of Jehovah.

Answer:

We also want to continue to be guided by Jehovah, trusting that he will help us keep the mind and heart in good condition. Psalms 143:10 expresses this idea very well: ask Jehovah to teach us and lead us on the right path.

Answer:

And we want to keep thinking about the future. Very soon, in the new world, this fight will be over. Waking up without distressing thoughts, happy to serve Jehovah, will be a reality. That hope gives us strength to keep fighting today.

WHAT RESPONDER?

Why did the apostle Paul feel sometimes unhedit?

Answer:

Sometimes he felt like that about his past. He remembered very painful things, such as persecuting the congregation and approving Stephen’s murder. Although Jehovah had forgiven him, those memories sometimes kept weighing him.

Answer:

He was also unhed angry for his “thorn in the flesh,” a very painful burden that caused him constant suffering. We don’t know exactly what it was, but we do know it really affected it and it wasn’t a small thing.

Answer:

And another reason was the struggle with his imperfections. He wanted to do the right thing, but he still had an inner battle against his bad inclinations. That frustration of seeing that he still failed made him feel very bad at times.

What helped Paul maintain joy despite his negative feelings?

Answer:

It helped him focus on positive things: the good news of congregations, the friendship of faithful brothers and the clean conscience of knowing that he had Jehovah’s approval. He didn’t allow the negative to occupy his entire mental space.

Answer:

It also helped him a lot to meditate on the rescue and see it as a personal gift. Paul was convinced that Jehovah had forgiven his sins and would continue to do so thanks to Jesus’ sacrifice. That gave him peace and spiritual dignity back.

Answer:

He also actively fought against his imperfections and continued to serve Jehovah with constancy. He didn’t give up or be stuck in the guilt. That mixture of gratitude, faith in the ransom and spiritual activity helped him maintain joy.

What can we do to fight negative feelings?

Answer:

Maintain a good program of spiritual activities: reading the Bible, praying, preaching, preparing for meetings, attending and commenting. All this strengthens the mind and heart, and helps us to ensure that negative thoughts do not gain ground.

Answer:

Ask Jehovah to help us understand what we really need. Sometimes you need to identify the root of the problem, see what triggers those thoughts and stop feeding them. Jehovah can give us clarity if we ask him sincerely.

Answer:

And adapt personal study to our concrete struggle: to study on forgiveness, mercy, Jehovah’s loyal love or biblical characters who have gone through something similar.
