Nor do we want to stop doing what is right just because someone lets us down or treats us unfairly.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah 20:3, 4<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut the next day, when Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him: \u2018Jehovah has renamed you, not Pashhur but Terror on Every Side. For this is what Jehovah says: \u201cHere I am making you a terror to yourself and to all those who love you.\u201d\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comment 2:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After spending the night in the stocks, Jeremiah did not soften the message for fear of suffering again. He kept speaking with courage because he knew he was conveying Jehovah\u2019s words. This encourages us not to let a bad reaction or an unpleasant experience keep us from continuing to preach with tact and conviction.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah 20:6<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd as for you, Pashhur, and all who live in your house, you will go into captivity. You will go to Babylon, and there you will die, and there you will be buried, you and all your friends to whom you have prophesied lies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comment 3:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pashhur not only rejected the truth but also passed on lies to others. His example shows the great responsibility of anyone who claims to teach in God\u2019s name. In the ministry and in the congregation, we want to check carefully what we say and always base it on the Bible, not on personal opinions or ideas.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah 20:7, 8<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou have fooled me, O Jehovah, and I was fooled. You used your strength against me, and you prevailed. I have become an object of laughter all day long; everyone is mocking me. For whenever I speak, I must cry out and proclaim: \u2018Violence and destruction!\u2019 For the word of Jehovah has become to me a cause for insults and mockery all day long.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comment 4:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah was deeply worn out by the constant ridicule. He expressed frankly how he felt, yet he never stopped acknowledging Jehovah as his God. This teaches us that we can speak to him honestly when we are frustrated or discouraged. Jehovah understands the words we utter out of pain and can help us regain our balance.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah 20:9<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen I said: \u2018I am not going to make mention of him, and I will no longer speak in his name.\u2019 But in my heart it became like a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was worn out from holding it in; I was unable to endure it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comment 5:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah even thought of stopping speaking, but Jehovah\u2019s word was like a fire within him. His love for God and for the truth was stronger than his discouragement. When we study deeply and strengthen our conviction, we too feel the desire to share the message, even if some people do not respond well.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah 20:10<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor I heard many spreading bad reports. Terror was all around. \u2018Report! Let us report about him!\u2019 Every man who wished me peace was watching for my downfall.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comment 6:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah found that even people who pretended to wish him peace were waiting for him to make a mistake. This must have been very painful. His experience teaches us to choose our friends wisely and not to be dominated by fear of what others may say. Jehovah knows the truth and can help us keep a good conscience.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah 20:11<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut Jehovah was with me like a mighty warrior. That is why those persecuting me will stumble and not prevail.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comment 7:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah did not say that he himself was strong like a warrior but that Jehovah was with him like a mighty warrior. This difference is very encouraging. When we face opposition, family problems, or pressure because of our faith, we do not rely solely on our own personality. Jehovah can give us the courage and endurance that we do not have on our own.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah 20:12<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut you, O Jehovah of armies, are examining the righteous one; you see into the deepest emotions and the heart. Let me see your vengeance on them, for to you I have revealed my legal case.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comment 8:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah knew that Jehovah saw both his heart and the true intentions of his enemies. That is why he entrusted his case to him and did not try to avenge himself. When we suffer an injustice, we can do the same. Jehovah knows all the facts, even those we are unaware of, and he will always judge with justice and at the right time.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah 20:13<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSing to Jehovah! Praise Jehovah! For he has rescued the poor one from the hand of evildoers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comment 9:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite all the suffering he was going through, Jeremiah still found reasons to praise Jehovah. Recalling the occasions when God had rescued his servants strengthened his confidence. We too can fight discouragement by reviewing answers to our prayers and times when Jehovah sustained us through his Word or the congregation.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah 20:14, 18<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCursed be the day that I was born! May the day that my mother gave me birth not be blessed! [&#8230;] Why is it that I came out of the womb to see hard work and grief and to end my days in shame?\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comment 10:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These words show that Jeremiah went through moments of deep emotional distress. Even so, his feelings did not mean that he had lost faith, for he kept speaking with Jehovah and carrying out his assignment. This reminds us that a faithful servant can feel very downhearted. At such times he needs understanding, spiritual support, and time to regain strength.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spiritual Gems for chapter 21 of Jeremiah<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah 21:2<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPlease inquire of Jehovah in our behalf, for King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon is making war against us. Perhaps Jehovah will do for us according to all his wonderful works and make him withdraw from us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comment 1:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">King Zedekiah sought Jehovah\u2019s help only when he was already suffering the consequences of his disobedience. He wanted a miraculous intervention, but he had shown no genuine repentance. This teaches us that we should not turn to Jehovah only when we are in trouble. We want to seek his guidance and obey it every day, before difficulties arise.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah 21:4<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am going to turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands, with which you are fighting the king of Babylon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comment 2:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The people of Jerusalem trusted in their weapons and defenses, but Jehovah warned that those very resources would not help them. This reminds us that no human ability can replace God\u2019s favor. We can be prudent and use practical means, but our main trust must always be in Jehovah and in obeying his instructions.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah 21:5<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and a strong arm, in anger and in wrath and in great indignation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comment 3:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How serious it was that the people chose a course that made Jehovah their adversary. He had wanted to protect them, but their persistent rebelliousness changed the situation. This warning encourages us not to resist his guidance. Being on Jehovah\u2019s side is always the safest position, even if obeying means making difficult changes.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah 21:7<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI will give King Zedekiah of Judah, his servants, and the people of this city [&#8230;] into the hand of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comment 4:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zedekiah\u2019s position as king did not shield him from accountability. Jehovah is impartial and judges everyone according to their conduct, without being impressed by titles or authority. This helps us stay humble. Having responsibilities or years of service never places us above Bible principles or removes our need to obey.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah 21:8<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am setting before you the way of life and the way of death.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comment 5:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even when Jerusalem was about to be destroyed, Jehovah offered a clear choice. This shows that he respects freedom of decision and explains the consequences of each course. Today too he sets before us decisions that can strengthen or weaken our spirituality. Choosing the way of life means obeying even when the instruction is not easy.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah 21:9<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut whoever goes out and surrenders to the Chaldeans who are besieging you will keep living, and his life will be his spoil.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comment 6:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Surrendering to the Chaldeans might have seemed a humiliating or even absurd decision, but it was Jehovah\u2019s instruction and the only way to survive. This teaches us that his directions will not always match what seems logical from a human standpoint. True trust is shown by obeying even when doing so requires humility and courage.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah 21:10<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor I have set my face against this city to bring calamity and not good,\u2019 declares Jehovah. \u2018It will be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will burn it with fire.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comment 7:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jehovah had made a firm decision after the people repeatedly rejected his warnings. This shows that his patience is immense but not unlimited. We do not want to put off the changes we know we need to make. Responding promptly to correction keeps our heart from hardening and shows that we value Jehovah\u2019s mercy.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah 21:11<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo the household of the king of Judah, hear the word of Jehovah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comment 8:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jehovah still directed a specific message to the royal household. Although they held important positions, they needed to listen to his Word like everyone else. This teaches that those who have responsibilities should be especially receptive to divine guidance. We imitate his justice when we treat everyone impartially, defend those who need help, and avoid taking advantage of the most vulnerable people.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah 21:13, 14<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c\u2018Here I am against you, O inhabitant of the valley, O rock of the level land,\u2019 declares Jehovah. \u2018You men are saying: \u201cWho can come down against us? And who can enter our dwellings?\u201d I will call you to account according to the fruitage of your dealings.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comment 10:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The people of Jerusalem felt protected by the location and defenses of their city.
