She gave up a comfortable home, the closeness of her relatives, and much material security because she trusted in Jehovah’s direction.

Comment 2:
She was also courageous because she agreed to live in tents and move from place to place. That life was far less secure than the one she had had in Ur. Even so, she did not pressure Abraham to go back, but loyally supported the assignment Jehovah had given them.

Comment 3:
Sarah showed courage when she was taken to Pharaoh’s palace. Although she could have enjoyed security and comforts there, she did not abandon Abraham or forget her marriage. She remained loyal in a situation that surely caused her much uncertainty and fear.

Comment 4:
She showed courage by continuing to trust in Jehovah’s promises even though for many years she could not have children. The wait must have been emotionally painful, but she finally saw how Jehovah fulfilled his word and allowed her to become the mother of Isaac at the age of 90.

Comment 5:
Sarah was courageous because she did not let nostalgia control her decisions. She could have thought constantly about what she had left behind, but she looked to the future. Her faith helped her give up present comforts in order to receive far more valuable blessings.

1. Was it right for Sarah to marry Abraham even though he was her half brother?

Comment 1:
Yes. Sarah and Abraham lived many centuries before Jehovah gave the Mosaic Law, which later prohibited marriages between such close relatives. So at that time their marriage did not violate any law that God had established.

Comment 2:
Abraham explained that Sarah was the daughter of his father, though not of his mother. So she really was his half sister. In the first centuries of humankind, marriages between relatives were more common, and the restrictions that came later did not yet exist.

Comment 3:
Jehovah acknowledged and blessed the marriage of Sarah and Abraham. He used them to fulfill a fundamental part of his purpose, since Isaac would be born to them. That shows that their union was valid and had divine approval.

Comment 4:
In time, Jehovah established different standards to protect his people. But it would not be right to apply those laws retroactively to people who lived before they were enacted. Sarah and Abraham acted in harmony with the standards of their time.

Comment 5:
This detail reminds us that we should consider the historical context of the Bible accounts. Some practices that were later prohibited had not yet been regulated. What matters is that Sarah and Abraham respected the instructions Jehovah had given them.

2. What things did Sarah perhaps have to leave behind when she left Ur?

Comment 1:
Sarah possibly left a large, well-built house. Ur was a developed city, and some homes had interior courtyards, several rooms, and systems for obtaining water. Exchanging that for a tent was a great sacrifice.

Comment 2:
She also had to say goodbye to relatives, friends, and neighbors she had known for years. There were no fast means of communication, so she probably knew she might never see many of those people again. That must have been emotionally difficult.

Comment 3:
Sarah left the protection of the walls, the guards, and the organization of an important city. During the journey and in Canaan she would have to live in open places, exposed to thieves, animals, and other dangers. Even so, she trusted that Jehovah would care for them.

Comment 4:
She surely gave up markets full of goods, clothing, utensils, and valuable objects. The jewelry uncovered in ancient Ur confirms that wealth and highly developed craftsmanship existed there. Sarah left that whole materialistic environment without letting possessions hold her back.

Comment 5:
She also left a familiar routine and a relatively stable life. From then on she would have to travel by camel, take care of a camp, and adapt to new places. Her willingness shows that obeying Jehovah was more important to her than keeping comfort.

3. How do we know that Abraham acted rightly when he concealed that Sarah was his wife?

Comment 1:
Abraham did not say something completely false, since Sarah really was his half sister. His intention was to keep from being killed so that someone could take her. In that dangerous setting, he took a prudent step to protect both of their lives.

Comment 2:
Abraham was not trying to get rid of Sarah or break up his marriage. He feared that powerful men would murder him because of her beauty. That is why he asked her to mention the family relationship that also existed between the two of them.

Comment 3:
Jehovah did not condemn Abraham for that decision. Rather, he intervened to protect Sarah both in Egypt and later when Abimelech wanted to take her. That indicates that God understood the dangerous circumstances they faced.

Comment 4:
The situation shows how vulnerable a foreigner could become in those territories. Abraham had no army and no political protection. He used a partial truth as a safety measure, but he kept trusting that Jehovah would resolve the situation.

Comment 5:
The account does not present Abraham as a man who wanted to deceive out of selfish interest. He acted out of a real fear of losing his life. Even so, the final protection did not depend on that strategy but on Jehovah’s intervention.

4. Although Sarah respected Abraham’s authority, does that mean she never expressed her opinion even when it was different?

Comment 1:
No. Sarah respected Abraham, but that did not mean she could not tell him what she thought. On various occasions she spoke frankly about important family matters. A respectful marriage allows both spouses to communicate their feelings and concerns.

Comment 2:
Sarah was not a woman without opinions of her own. She had a strong personality and took an active part in family decisions. She could express a different opinion without ceasing to respect the responsibility Abraham had as head of the family.

Comment 3:
When the problem involving Hagar and Ishmael arose, Sarah clearly explained how she felt and what she believed should be done. Jehovah told Abraham to listen to his wife. This shows that a wife’s opinion can be very valuable and correct.

Comment 4:
Bible-based respect does not require keeping silent in the face of every problem. Sarah could speak sincerely, but without belittling or humiliating her husband. Her example teaches that good communication and respect for authority can coexist perfectly.

Comment 5:
Abraham also showed respect by taking Sarah’s words seriously. The two could have different perspectives, but they tried to settle matters under Jehovah’s direction. That balance helped their marriage to stay united through many trials.

How were Sarah and Lot’s wife similar?

Comment 1:
Both had to leave a place where they had lived and follow their husbands. Sarah left Ur together with Abraham, and Lot’s wife had to leave Sodom. In both cases, Jehovah gave them the opportunity to get away from an environment that did not have his approval.

Comment 2:
Both were married to men who worshipped Jehovah and received benefits because of their families’ faith. Both Abraham and Lot made decisions that required moving and leaving behind a familiar way of life.

Comment 3:
Both experienced major changes in their circumstances. They had to leave their homes and adapt to new places. So both faced the same question: to trust in Jehovah and look ahead, or to let nostalgia dominate them.

Comment 4:
Sarah and Lot’s wife lived in prosperous surroundings. Ur and Sodom offered material comforts that could be appealing. Both had to show what they valued more: possessions and human security, or obedience to Jehovah.

Comment 5:
Both received a clear opportunity to be saved thanks to Jehovah’s direction. They were not obligated to remain in condemned places. What made the difference was not the opportunity they received but the attitude with which each one responded.

How were Sarah and Lot’s wife different?

Comment 1:
Sarah left Ur and did not keep looking for a chance to return. Lot’s wife left Sodom physically, but her heart seemed to remain there. By looking back, she showed that she still felt attachment to the life Jehovah had commanded her to leave.

Comment 2:
Sarah agreed to live in tents for years without constantly complaining about what she had lost. Lot’s wife, on the other hand, did not fully obey a simple and urgent instruction: to leave without looking back.

Comment 3:
Sarah looked toward Jehovah’s future promises, while Lot’s wife looked toward what she was leaving behind. One let herself be guided by faith; the other allowed nostalgia and material attachment to be stronger than obedience.

Comment 4:
Sarah kept supporting Abraham even when there was a famine and they had to go to Egypt. She did not suggest returning to Ur. Lot’s wife did not maintain that same determination when she left Sodom, and her disobedience had immediate consequences.

Comment 5:
The main difference was in the heart. Both moved away physically from their former home, but only Sarah fully accepted the new life Jehovah was offering her. Her mind and her desires were oriented forward.

What do we learn from the decisions Sarah and Lot’s wife made, and from what happened to each of them?

Comment 1:
We learn that it is not enough to obey outwardly. We must also turn our heart away from whatever Jehovah disapproves of. Lot’s wife left Sodom but kept looking toward it. Sarah, on the other hand, left Ur both physically and emotionally.

Comment 2:
Decisions can reveal what we truly love. Sarah valued Jehovah’s promises more than her former home and its comforts. Lot’s wife let her attachment to the past outweigh a divine instruction that could have saved her life.

Comment 3:
Sarah’s experience shows that giving up something for Jehovah is never a permanent loss. Although she left many comforts, she received protection, a family, and the hope of seeing all the divine promises fulfilled.

Comment 4:
What happened to Lot’s wife warns us against spiritual indecision. When Jehovah asks us to leave a practice, a friendship, or a harmful goal, we must not keep desiring it in secret or look for an occasion to go back.

Comment 5:
Both examples encourage us to look to the future. The present world may offer temporary advantages, but Jehovah’s promises are far more valuable. If we cultivate faith like Sarah’s, we will be able to move forward without feeling that we have left behind something essential.

Sarah was very beautiful and her husband was very rich. What can we learn from her if our situation is similar?

Comment 1:
Sarah did not let her beauty become the center of her identity. Proverbs 31:30 reminds us that beauty is fleeting, but the woman who fears Jehovah deserves praise. What really made her valuable was her faith and her loyalty.

Comment 2:
Although Abraham was very rich, Sarah was willing to live in tents and lead a simple life. She did not demand that her husband use his resources to recreate the comforts of Ur. For her, serving Jehovah was more important than displaying social standing.

Comment 3:
Her example teaches us not to place our security in money. Riches could make some things easier, but they could not protect them from a famine, from powerful rulers, or from infertility. Sarah learned to depend on Jehovah, not on material goods.

Comment 4:
If someone has beauty, resources, or a good position, that person can imitate Sarah by using those circumstances with modesty. She did not consider herself superior or let comforts draw her away from the assignment Jehovah had given her family.

Comment 5:
Sarah shows that a person can have material goods without loving them. She and Abraham were willing to change their way of life in order to obey. The key is not how much we own but whether we would be willing to give it up in order to do Jehovah’s will.

In what ways can you copy Sarah’s example of courage?

Comment 1:
I can copy her by accepting changes that let me serve Jehovah better. Perhaps an assignment, a move, or a new situation takes me out of my comfort zone. Instead of focusing on what I lose, I can think about how Jehovah will bless my obedience.

Comment 2:
I can also refuse to look back. If I have left a practice or a goal incompatible with Jehovah’s will, I must not idealize my former life. Remembering why I made the change will help me keep my eyes fixed on the future promises.

Comment 3:
I can imitate her loyalty by supporting my family when we go through difficult circumstances. Sarah did not increase the pressure on Abraham during the famine or on their travels. She tried to cooperate and trust in Jehovah rather than turn every difficulty into a cause for conflict.

Comment 4:
Her example teaches me to be courageous when I have to wait. Sarah had to wait many years to have a child. I too can keep serving Jehovah with joy even if some blessings, answers, or goals take longer than I expected.

Comment 5:
I can copy her courage by protecting my family spiritually. Sarah cared about Isaac and made difficult decisions to avoid harmful influences. In the same way, I can act firmly when something endangers the spirituality of those in my care.

What does this account teach me about Jehovah?

Comment 1:
It teaches me that Jehovah does not forget the sacrifices we make to serve him. Sarah left her home and many comforts, but God observed her faith. Although some blessings were slow to come, Jehovah fulfilled exactly what he had promised her.

Comment 2:
Jehovah protects his servants in situations they cannot control. Sarah was twice taken to the house of a powerful ruler, but Jehovah intervened to return her to Abraham and to preserve the family through which he would fulfill his purpose.

Comment 3:
We also see that Jehovah can do things that seem humanly impossible. Sarah was 90 years old and had already passed the age of having children, but God allowed her to give birth to Isaac. No physical obstacle can prevent Jehovah from fulfilling a promise.

Comment 4:
Jehovah understands the pain and the waiting of his servants. He knew how much Sarah had suffered by not being able to have children. When the appointed time came, he turned her sadness into a joy so great that the name Isaac came to be linked with laughter.

Comment 5:
The account shows that Jehovah values the faith of women as much as that of men. Sarah was not merely Abraham’s companion. Jehovah mentioned her personally in his promises and used her as an essential part of the fulfillment of his purpose.

How does this account relate to Jehovah’s purpose and the main theme of the Bible?

Comment 1:
Jehovah promised that through Abraham a great nation would be formed. For that to happen, Sarah had to become the mother of Isaac. Her faith and perseverance were directly related to the family line that would lead to the Messiah.

Comment 2:
The miraculous birth of Isaac showed that the fulfillment of Jehovah’s purpose does not depend solely on human abilities. When it seemed that the promise could not come true, God acted and ensured the continuation of the promised offspring.

Comment 3:
Sarah supported Jehovah’s sovereignty by obeying his direction and leaving Ur. She showed that a person can voluntarily give up material security because he trusts that God’s way of ruling is the best.

Comment 4:
Although Sarah died without seeing all the promises fulfilled, she kept her faith. This relates to the Bible’s theme because God’s Kingdom will make real what she hoped for: a peaceful earth and blessings for all nations through the offspring of Abraham.

Comment 5:
Her account also points to the resurrection. Sarah remains in Jehovah’s memory and will be able to see how the promises she supported during her life are fully fulfilled. The Kingdom will give back to her everything she left behind and much more.

What would you like to ask Sarah when she is resurrected?

Comment 1:
I would like to ask her how she felt when Abraham told her that Jehovah was asking them to leave Ur. Perhaps she felt excited and worried at the same time. Knowing how she overcame those fears could help us when we face unexpected changes.

Comment 2:
I would also ask her what was the hardest thing to leave in Ur. Maybe she missed relatives, her home, or some comforts. It would be interesting to know what thoughts helped her not to idealize the past or look for a chance to go back.

Comment 3:
I would like to know how she felt when she was taken to Pharaoh’s palace and was separated from Abraham. It must have been a terrifying situation. Her experience could teach us a lot about how to stay calm and trust in Jehovah when we do not control what is happening.

Comment 4:
I would ask her how she experienced the moment when she learned she would have a child at the age of 90. After so many decades of waiting and disappointment, her joy must have been immense. It would be lovely to hear how her life changed with the birth of Isaac.

Comment 5:
I would also like to ask her which of Abraham’s qualities she admired and how they resolved their differences. Their marriage went through moves, dangers, and long periods of uncertainty. Her memories could help many married couples strengthen respect and communication.

Lesson 3: Sarah Refused to Look Back In what ways did Sarah show courage?
