Lesson 5: Abraham\u2014He Faced His Hardest Challenge<\/h2>\n\n

In what ways did Abraham show courage during this period of his life?<\/h3>\n\n

Comment 1:<\/strong>Abraham showed extraordinary courage by obeying when Jehovah asked him to take Isaac to the land of Moriah. This was no ordinary test: Isaac was the son he had waited decades for and whom he deeply loved. Even so, Abraham put his trust in Jehovah above his own feelings.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 2:<\/strong>He also showed courage during the journey. He had several days to think about what Jehovah had asked him to do, and at any point he could have turned back. Yet he kept going because he remembered everything he had already learned about Jehovah\u2019s justice, power, and faithfulness.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 3:<\/strong>Abraham trusted Jehovah so much that he told his servants that he and Isaac would return. Hebrews explains that he concluded that God could raise his son from the dead. That hope turned a humanly unbearable situation into a test that he could face with genuine courage.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 4:<\/strong>His courage lasted right to the final moment. He prepared the altar, arranged the wood, bound Isaac, and raised the knife. He stopped only when Jehovah\u2019s angel told him to. In this way, he showed that his obedience was not merely in words; he was willing to go as far as Jehovah directed him.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 5:<\/strong>Abraham was courageous because his faith was stronger than what he could see. He did not necessarily understand every detail of how Jehovah would resolve the situation, but he knew God well. He was sure that Jehovah would never act unjustly or allow His promises to fail.<\/p>\n\n

1. What evidence is there that Abraham was a real person?<\/h3>\n\n

Comment 1:<\/strong>The Bible presents Abraham as a historical person and gives many details about his family and the places where he lived. Ancient tablets contain names identical to those of some of his relatives, such as Peleg, Serug, Nahor, Terah, and Haran, which fits the historical setting described in Genesis.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 2:<\/strong>Archaeology has also identified Ur of the Chaldeans, the city Abraham left. Its ruins are in the region corresponding to southeastern modern-day Iraq. Haran and Hebron, other places closely connected with his life, also correspond to known historical locations.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 3:<\/strong>An interesting detail is an ancient Egyptian relief at Karnak that mentions the \u201cfield of Abram.\u201d This reference is especially noteworthy because of its age. Although a single find does not prove every event in Abraham\u2019s life, it does fit the historical framework presented in the Bible.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 4:<\/strong>In addition, the later history of Abraham\u2019s descendants can be traced both in the Bible and in outside sources. Several kings of Israel and Judah who descended from him also appear in non-Biblical records, confirming that this family really did grow into a nation.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 5:<\/strong>The evidence does not depend on just one archaeological discovery. Names, places, peoples, and events connected with Abraham\u2019s descendants fit within a real historical setting. All of this strengthens our confidence that Abraham was not a legendary character.<\/p>\n\n

2. Who may have taught Abraham about Jehovah?<\/h3>\n\n

Comment 1:<\/strong>It is quite possible that Shem, one of Noah\u2019s faithful sons, taught Abraham about Jehovah. Their lives overlapped by about 150 years, so Abraham could have had direct contact with someone who had survived the Flood and remained faithful to the true God.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 2:<\/strong>Shem would have been an extraordinary source of spiritual knowledge. He had known the world before the Flood, had seen Jehovah\u2019s warning fulfilled, and had also lived through the rebellion at Babel. He could pass on experiences that he himself had witnessed.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 3:<\/strong>This is especially interesting because Abraham grew up in Ur, where idolatry was widespread and even his own father had worshipped false gods. In that environment, the teaching and good example of a faithful man like Shem could have greatly strengthened his faith.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 4:<\/strong>We cannot say for certain that Shem personally instructed Abraham, but the possibility fits well with Bible chronology. What we do know is that Abraham came to know Jehovah deeply and developed a very close relationship of trust with him.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 5:<\/strong>This also shows the value of passing faith from one generation to another. An older, spiritually mature person can share experiences and knowledge that greatly strengthen younger ones. Later, Abraham did the same by teaching his own household about Jehovah.<\/p>\n\n

3. What made Jehovah accept Abraham\u2019s worship?<\/h3>\n\n

Comment 1:<\/strong>Jehovah accepted Abraham\u2019s worship because it sprang from sincere faith. His sacrifices were not mere rituals. His life showed that he truly trusted God, obeyed His instructions, and wanted to give Him his best. That is why his faith came to be counted as righteousness.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 2:<\/strong>Abraham also directed his worship correctly. He lived among people who worshipped false gods, but he reserved his devotion exclusively for Jehovah. He built altars, offered sacrifices, and called on God\u2019s name without being drawn into the idolatry of those around him.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 3:<\/strong>Another factor was the quality of what he was willing to offer. The case of Isaac showed just how far his willingness to give Jehovah what he valued most extended. God did not allow him to sacrifice his son, but He saw perfectly what was in Abraham\u2019s heart.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 4:<\/strong>He also followed the way Jehovah directed. When he received specific instructions, he was willing to obey them exactly. This shows that true worship is not simply a matter of having good intentions but also of respecting the way Jehovah wants to be worshipped.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 5:<\/strong>So Jehovah approved Abraham because good motives, faith, obedience, and exclusive worship all came together. His example teaches us that God does not look only at what we do outwardly; He cares very much about why we do it and what place He has in our heart.<\/p>\n\n

4. How does the promise at Genesis 22:17 confirm that the Bible is scientifically accurate?<\/h3>\n\n

Comment 1:<\/strong>Jehovah compared Abraham\u2019s future offspring to \u201cthe stars of the heavens\u201d and to the grains of sand on the seashore. Today we know that the number of stars is immense, far greater than the few thousand that a person can distinguish with the unaided eye.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 2:<\/strong>Without optical instruments, on a clear night we can observe only a tiny fraction of the stars that exist. Yet the Bible used a comparison that conveys the idea of a virtually countless number, which fits very well with what astronomy later discovered.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 3:<\/strong>It is also interesting that the stars are compared with grains of sand. Both expressions convey the idea of enormous quantities that a human could not count. For people of that time, the true number of stars could not be known simply by looking at the sky.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 4:<\/strong>Other Bible passages likewise speak of the army of the heavens as something that cannot be counted. Today we know of galaxies containing billions of stars, and we know that there are immense numbers of galaxies. This modern knowledge makes that Bible comparison even more striking.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 5:<\/strong>This detail helps us trust the Bible. It was not written as an astronomy textbook, but when it mentions matters related to nature, it does not have to rely on mistaken scientific ideas that were common in many ancient cultures.<\/p>\n\n

How did hope help Abraham to be courageous? How can hope help us to be courageous?<\/h3>\n\n

Comment 1:<\/strong>Hope enabled Abraham to look beyond what seemed to be happening at that moment. If Isaac died, he was convinced that Jehovah could resurrect him. He focused not only on the possible loss but on God\u2019s power and promises.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 2:<\/strong>That hope was not just wishful thinking. Abraham had already seen Jehovah do something that seemed impossible: enable him and Sarah to have Isaac when they were very old. That experience had taught him that no situation is too difficult for Jehovah.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 3:<\/strong>We can use our hope in a similar way. If we lose someone we love, the resurrection hope does not immediately remove the pain, but it helps us look beyond death and think about the time when we can be together again.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 4:<\/strong>Hope can also help us when we suffer from illness, aging, or problems that have no solution at present. Frequently thinking about the new world reminds us that our current difficulties will not last forever and gives us strength to remain faithful.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 5:<\/strong>Abraham shows that the more real our hope is to us, the more courage we will have. If we meditate on Jehovah\u2019s promises until we can see them with the eyes of faith, it will be easier to make sacrifices and endure temporary losses because we know what he will give us in the future.<\/p>\n\n

When an opportunity to preach presents itself, how can we imitate Abraham\u2019s self-sacrificing spirit?<\/h3>\n\n

Comment 1:<\/strong>We can sacrifice some of our free time. Perhaps we had planned to rest or spend a few hours on another activity, but an opportunity arises to preach or accompany someone. Choosing to take part can become a real sacrifice of praise to Jehovah.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 2:<\/strong>At times, the sacrifice will be overcoming our desire for comfort. Perhaps it is hot, we are tired, or we simply find it hard to start a conversation. Remembering that Abraham was willing to do something far more difficult can help us not to consider a small effort to talk about Jehovah excessive.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 3:<\/strong>We can also take advantage of unexpected opportunities. A conversation with a coworker, neighbor, or relative may come up when we had not planned it. We may have to overcome nervousness or briefly change our plans, but showing courage can lead to a fine spiritual conversation.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 4:<\/strong>Some can make sacrifices to expand their ministry, such as adjusting work schedules, reducing certain activities, or simplifying their lifestyle. Not all of us can do the same thing, but each of us can ask what reasonable change would allow us to give a little more to Jehovah.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 5:<\/strong>What matters is our motivation. Abraham did not obey reluctantly. We too do not want to view the ministry as something that takes time away from us, but as an opportunity to offer Jehovah something valuable: our energy, our voice, and our time.<\/p>\n\n

When deciding what to do with our material possessions, how can we imitate Abraham\u2019s self-sacrificing spirit?<\/h3>\n\n

Comment 1:<\/strong>We can remember that our possessions are tools, not the center of our life. When deciding what to buy or how much to accumulate, we can ask ourselves whether that decision will make it easier to serve Jehovah or whether it will end up consuming too much time, money, and attention.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 2:<\/strong>We can also use our resources to support spiritual interests. Perhaps we can contribute to the worldwide work, help with needs related to the congregation, or use our vehicle and other possessions to support the preaching work and our brothers and sisters.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 3:<\/strong>A self-sacrificing spirit may lead us to live with a little less if that gives us more time for Jehovah. This does not mean despising material things but avoiding letting comforts become so important that we are unwilling to give any of them up.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 4:<\/strong>Abraham was a man with many possessions, but they never came first. This teaches us that the problem is not necessarily having resources, but allowing them to become our main source of security. Our trust must continue to be in Jehovah.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 5:<\/strong>We can honor Jehovah with our valuable things. That includes not giving him only what is left over. When we willingly use some of our resources to support his worship and help others, we show by our actions what comes first in our life.<\/p>\n\n

When we learn that a brother or sister needs help, how can we imitate Abraham\u2019s self-sacrificing spirit?<\/h3>\n\n

Comment 1:<\/strong>We can take action rather than simply say that we are sorry about the situation. Perhaps we can bring food, help with some practical matter, provide transportation, or give our time. Often the most valuable help requires sacrificing some of our own comfort.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 2:<\/strong>Perhaps a brother or sister needs financial help and we are able to contribute discreetly. It does not necessarily have to be a large amount. Jehovah values the generous spirit with which we use what we have to help someone in need.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 3:<\/strong>The sacrifice can also simply involve time. Visiting an older brother or sister, listening to someone who is sad, or accompanying someone who is going through a trial may require us to change our plans, but it can have an enormous effect on that person.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 4:<\/strong>We do not want to help only when it is convenient. Abraham was willing to face a very painful test out of obedience to Jehovah. His example can move us to ask ourselves: \u201cIf I really can do something for this brother or sister, what am I willing to sacrifice?\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Comment 5:<\/strong>In addition, helping others strengthens the whole congregation. When a person sees that fellow believers are willing to make sacrifices for him or her, that person feels Jehovah\u2019s love in a practical way and understands better what it means to belong to a genuine spiritual family.<\/p>\n\n

In what other ways can you imitate the courage Abraham showed in this account?<\/h3>\n\n

Comment 1:<\/strong>I can imitate him by obeying even when I do not know all the details. Abraham did not know exactly how Jehovah would resolve the situation, but he knew God well enough to trust him. I too do not need to understand everything before following Bible direction.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 2:<\/strong>I can also meditate on past experiences. When Abraham faced this test, he could remember how Jehovah had acted justly in the past and how He had made Isaac\u2019s birth possible. Remembering how Jehovah has helped me before can strengthen me to face a new trial.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 3:<\/strong>I can cultivate deep faith before a crisis comes. Abraham did not develop all that trust during the few days of the journey to Moriah. He had spent decades getting to know Jehovah. Similarly, daily study and prayer prepare us for trials we do not yet know about.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 4:<\/strong>I can refuse to let my feelings override my obedience. Abraham loved Isaac very much, but his love for Jehovah still came first. We too may have to choose between something we deeply want and what we know Jehovah wants.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 5:<\/strong>Finally, I can trust that obeying Jehovah always turns out for the best. At first it may involve sacrifices, pressure, or fear, but Abraham\u2019s experience shows that no one can make a sacrifice for Jehovah and end up being the true loser.<\/p>\n\n

What does this account teach me about Jehovah?<\/h3>\n\n

Comment 1:<\/strong>It teaches me that Jehovah deeply understands the pain of losing a child. Abraham\u2019s experience helps us imagine, even in a limited way, what it meant for Jehovah to give his only-begotten Son so that we could receive life.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 2:<\/strong>We also learn that Jehovah is just. Abraham had already seen that God never acts unjustly. That certainty was an important basis for trusting Jehovah even when faced with an instruction that, from a human standpoint, seemed extremely difficult to understand.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 3:<\/strong>Jehovah is also almighty. He had enabled Abraham and Sarah to have a son when, humanly speaking, it seemed impossible. That convinced Abraham that, if necessary, Jehovah could even bring Isaac back to life.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 4:<\/strong>This account shows that Jehovah does not enjoy making his servants suffer. He stopped Abraham before he harmed Isaac. The test revealed the extent of Abraham\u2019s faith, but Jehovah himself ultimately provided the animal for the sacrifice.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 5:<\/strong>Above all, we learn how much Jehovah loves us. He did allow his own Son to die, not because he lacked love for Jesus, but precisely because of the immense love he has for mankind. Thinking about that sacrifice can draw us much closer to him.<\/p>\n\n

How does this account relate to Jehovah\u2019s purpose and the main theme of the Bible?<\/h3>\n\n

Comment 1:<\/strong>Isaac was part of the line through which the promised offspring would come. Jehovah had said that through Abraham\u2019s offspring all nations would be blessed. So Abraham knew that Isaac\u2019s death could not cause that promise to fail.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 2:<\/strong>The account also foreshadowed Jesus\u2019 sacrifice in a moving way. Abraham was willing to give up his beloved son, and centuries later Jehovah actually gave his only-begotten Son. Thanks to that sacrifice, mankind can receive everlasting life.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 3:<\/strong>Isaac cooperated willingly. Although he was strong enough to resist his elderly father, he allowed Abraham to bind him. This reminds us of Jesus\u2019 willing obedience, since he too agreed to give his life because he wanted to do his Father\u2019s will.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 4:<\/strong>After that test, Jehovah again confirmed that he would multiply Abraham\u2019s offspring and that through it the nations would be blessed. So the episode is directly connected with the Messianic Kingdom and the salvation Jehovah offers through Christ.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 5:<\/strong>The account also shows that nothing can prevent Jehovah\u2019s purpose from being fulfilled. Neither the age of Abraham and Sarah, nor an apparent impossibility, nor even death could prevent God from keeping his word. We can have that same confidence in all the promises connected with his Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n

What would I like to ask Abraham and Isaac when they are resurrected?<\/h3>\n\n

Comment 1:<\/strong>I would like to ask Abraham what he thought about during those nights on the journey to Moriah. The Bible tells us the conclusion he reached about the resurrection, but it would be exciting to know what prayers he offered and what memories of Jehovah\u2019s help gave him strength to continue.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 2:<\/strong>I would also ask him how he managed his emotions when Isaac asked where the sheep for the sacrifice was. It must have been one of the hardest moments of his life. Knowing how he felt could help us understand the depth of his faith even better.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 3:<\/strong>I would like to ask Isaac exactly when he understood what was happening. He was stronger than his father, yet he allowed himself to be bound. It would be very interesting to know how much trust he had in Jehovah and in Abraham to cooperate in that way.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 4:<\/strong>I would ask both of them how they felt when they heard the angel stop Abraham. After such enormous emotional tension, the relief must have been indescribable. That moment probably strengthened their friendship with Jehovah even more, as well as their relationship as father and son.<\/p>\n\n

Comment 5:<\/strong>Finally, I would like to ask them how they will feel when they fully understand that their experience came to represent Jesus\u2019 sacrifice.
