Let Us Value the Privilege of Rendering Jehovah “Fearless Sacred Service”

1. What did Zechariah say?

Amos 3:7 — For the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will not do a thing Unless he has revealed his confidential matter to his servants the prophets.

Answer 1: Zechariah explained under inspiration that his son John would prepare the people to recognize and follow the Messiah. Jehovah revealed this purpose beforehand, as he does through his servants the prophets.

Answer 2: In addition to speaking about John’s work, Zechariah delivered a message that also benefits us. His words highlight salvation, sacred service to Jehovah, and the preaching work.

Answer 3: John’s birth caused neighbors and relatives to wonder what that child would become. Zechariah’s answer showed that John would have an important mission related to the Messiah.

2. (a) According to Luke 1:67-73, what gift has Jehovah promised his people?

Luke 1:67-73 — Then Zechariah his father was filled with holy spirit, and he prophesied, saying: “Let Jehovah be praised, the God of Israel, because he has turned his attention to his people and has brought them deliverance. And he has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of David his servant, just as he has spoken through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, of a salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all those hating us; to show mercy in connection with our forefathers and to call to mind his holy covenant, the oath that he swore to Abraham our forefather,

Answer 1: Jehovah promised his people the wonderful gift of salvation. This promise shows that he has compassion for those who want to serve him and that he always keeps his covenants.

Answer 2: Salvation is not something we can obtain by our own merit. It is a gift that Jehovah has made possible through the promised Messiah.

Answer 3: Zechariah’s words connect salvation with the promises Jehovah made in the past. Therefore, we can have complete confidence that Jehovah will fulfill everything he has promised.

2. (b) Who is the “horn of salvation” mentioned at Luke 1:69?

Luke 1:69 — And he has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of David his servant,

Answer 1: The “horn of salvation” is Jesus, the Messiah. He came from the line of King David, just as Jehovah had promised.

Answer 2: Jesus became the Messiah when he was baptized and anointed with holy spirit at the age of 30. Thus he began to fulfill the role that Jehovah had assigned to him.

Answer 3: Jesus’ arrival was very near when Zechariah uttered this prophecy. That made his message especially timely and exciting for God’s people.

3. From whom and from what did the Jews need to be saved?

Answer 1: The Jews needed to be saved from Satan, who was truly responsible for their suffering and for their being slaves to sin and death.

Answer 2: They also needed to be freed from the curse of the Mosaic Law. Because they were imperfect, they could not keep it perfectly.

Answer 3: Above all, they needed salvation through forgiveness of their sins. Jesus would make that forgiveness possible and free them from enemies far greater than Rome.

4. From what enemies do we need to be saved?

Answer 1: We need to be saved from the sin and death that we have inherited. None of us can free ourselves from that condition.

Answer 2: We also need protection from Satan and the demons. They try to deceive us and cause us to stop serving Jehovah.

Answer 3: In addition, there are people or organizations that oppose our worship. Knowing who is behind that opposition helps us to stand firm and trust in Jehovah.

5. How does Jesus save us from sin?

John 3:16 — “For God loved the world so much that he gave his only-begotten Son, so that everyone exercising faith in him might not be destroyed but have everlasting life.

Answer 1: Jesus saves us because he gave his life so that those who exercise faith in him can have everlasting life. The ransom is clear proof of Jehovah’s love.

1 John 2:1-2 — My little children, I am writing you these things so that you may not commit a sin. And yet, if anyone does commit a sin, we have a helper with the Father, Jesus Christ, a righteous one. And he is a propitiatory sacrifice for our sins, yet not for ours only but also for the whole world’s.

Answer 2: Although we struggle not to sin, we are imperfect. When we repent and ask for forgiveness, Jehovah accepts our worship on the basis of Jesus’ sacrifice.

Answer 3: Jesus also taught how to worship Jehovah properly. Therefore, we show faith in our powerful savior by following his teachings and taking advantage of the ransom.

6. What will Jesus, the King of God’s Kingdom, soon accomplish? (See also the picture.)

Answer 1: At Armageddon, Jesus will eliminate all human enemies of God. Along with the 144,000 and the angels, he will protect Jehovah’s faithful servants.

John 5:28 — Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice

Answer 2: During the Thousand Year Reign, Jesus will resurrect the dead and help obedient mankind attain perfection. The picture helps us visualize that loving royal care.

Answer 3: Finally, sin, death, Satan, and the demons will disappear forever. Then we will be able to serve Jehovah completely free from every enemy.

7. According to Luke 1:74, 75, what privilege does Jehovah give his people?

Luke 1:74-75 — to grant us, after we have been rescued from the hands of enemies, the privilege of fearlessly rendering sacred service to him with loyalty and righteousness before him all our days.

Answer 1: Jehovah grants us the privilege of rendering him sacred service fearlessly, with loyalty and righteousness. Thanks to the ransom, we can approach him with a clean conscience.

Answer 2: We render sacred service by preaching, praying, studying God’s Word, and attending meetings and assemblies. These activities are directly related to our worship.

Answer 3: We also render sacred service when we serve at Bethel or help with the construction and maintenance of places of worship. All service to Jehovah deserves our appreciation.

8. Why do we render sacred service “fearlessly”?

John 6:39-40 — This is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose none out of all those whom he has given me, but that I should resurrect them on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who recognizes the Son and exercises faith in him should have everlasting life, and I will resurrect him on the last day.”

Answer 1: We do not have to fear death, because Jesus will resurrect those who remain faithful. This hope helps us focus on pleasing Jehovah, not on getting the most out of this system.

1 John 4:9-10 — By this the love of God was revealed in our case, that God sent his only-begotten Son into the world so that we might gain life through him. The love is in this respect, not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a propitiatory sacrifice for our sins.

Answer 2: Nor do we fear that Jehovah will reject us because we are sinners. The ransom confirms that he loves us and has made it possible for us to receive his forgiveness.

Answer 3: Even in the face of threats, we can remain loyal. Trust in Jehovah and in the resurrection is stronger than the fear our enemies may try to cause.

9. What struggle do some brothers have?

Answer 1: Some brothers find it difficult to believe that Jehovah is pleased with their worship. Perhaps a traumatic experience in the past deeply affected their self-esteem.

Answer 2: Others continue to feel very guilty about sins committed long ago, even though they have asked Jehovah for forgiveness and sought the help of the elders.

Answer 3: This struggle may cause a person to think that he does not deserve Jehovah’s approval. The following counsel from the article shows how to regain spiritual security.

10, 11. What can we do if we think that we will never recover from a past mistake? Give an example.

Answer 1: We must trust in Jehovah and not give up. It is like someone who breaks a leg: He trusts the doctor and continues the rehabilitation exercises even if recovery takes time.

1 John 3:19-20 — By this we will know that we originate with the truth, and we will assure our hearts before him regarding whatever our hearts may condemn us in, because God is greater than our hearts and knows all things.

Answer 2: If our heart condemns us, let us remember that Jehovah is greater than our heart. He knows about our repentance and can help us feel secure before him.

Answer 3: Spiritual “rehabilitation exercises” include praying, studying, and taking part in spiritual activities. Even if we do not see the results at first, we should not abandon that good program.

12. How were Zechariah’s words about John fulfilled? (Luke 1:76-79)

Luke 1:76-79 — But as for you, young child, you will be called a prophet of the Most High, for you will go ahead of Jehovah to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people by forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender compassion of our God. With this compassion a daybreak will visit us from on high, to give light to those sitting in darkness and death’s shadow and to guide our feet in the way of peace.”

Answer 1: John fulfilled the prophecy by going ahead of Jehovah to prepare his ways. He preached enthusiastically and urged the Jews to repent and get baptized.

John 1:29,34-36,40-41 — The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and he said: “See, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! And I have seen it, and I have given witness that this one is the Son of God.” Again the next day, John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he looked at Jesus walking, he said: “See, the Lamb of God!” Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard what John said and followed Jesus. He first found his own brother Simon and said to him: “We have found the Messiah” (which means, when translated, “Christ”),

Answer 2: After baptizing Jesus, John identified him as the Lamb of God and the Son of God. In this way, he clearly directed people’s attention to the Messiah.

Answer 3: John did not try to keep his disciples for himself. He encouraged them to follow Jesus, and some of them immediately accepted that direction.

13. What did Zechariah mean when he compared the Messiah’s arrival to “the light of a dawn”?

Answer 1: The comparison indicated that the Messiah’s arrival would mark the beginning of a new era. His coming would bring light and hope to people who were in spiritual darkness.

Answer 2: It was extraordinary news that deserved the widest possible announcement. John identified the Messiah, but he could not spread that message of salvation by himself.

Answer 3: The image of dawn also conveys that the light was increasing. The preaching of Jesus and his disciples would help many more people learn the good news.

14. In what important work did Jesus and his disciples share? (Isaiah 61:1, 2)

Isaiah 61:1-2 — The spirit of the Sovereign Lord Jehovah is upon me, Because Jehovah anointed me to declare good news to the meek. He sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And the wide opening of the eyes to the prisoners, To proclaim the year of Jehovah’s goodwill And the day of vengeance of our God, To comfort all who mourn,

Answer 1: Jesus fulfilled this prophecy by declaring good news to the meek, comforting those who were suffering, and proclaiming the year of Jehovah’s goodwill.

Answer 2: Jesus felt compassion for oppressed and mistreated people. That compassion moved him to enlighten them with the message of God’s Kingdom.

Answer 3: Jesus knew that many more preachers would be needed. So he trained his disciples to announce the good news diligently as well.

15. Why is the preaching work more important than ever today?

Answer 1: The preaching work is urgent because soon there will be an unprecedented great tribulation. Now is the time to tell people about the ransom and God’s Kingdom.

Answer 2: Some people may remember the message they heard and accept the good news during that period. Therefore, every conversation can be very valuable.

Answer 3: King Jesus will save Jehovah’s servants and carry out the victory of his Kingdom. This prospect motivates us to continue preaching faithfully now.

16. What do we want to fulfill? (See also the pictures.)

Luke 1:68-79 — “Let Jehovah be praised, the God of Israel, because he has turned his attention to his people and has brought them deliverance. But as for you, young child, you will be called a prophet of the Most High, for you will go ahead of Jehovah to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people by forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender compassion of our God. With this compassion a daybreak will visit us from on high, to give light to those sitting in darkness and death’s shadow and to guide our feet in the way of peace.”

Answer 1: We want to fulfill our responsibility to preach the year of Jehovah’s goodwill and the day of vengeance of our God. The message includes comfort and a needed warning.

Answer 2: If we value salvation and the privilege of serving Jehovah, we will want to invite others to worship him with us, with loyalty and righteousness every day.

Answer 3: The pictures show that we can preach in different places: from house to house, at work, or at school. We look for suitable opportunities to speak about the good news.

What wonderful gift has Jehovah given us?

Answer 1: Jehovah has given us the wonderful gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. That gift frees us from sin and death if we exercise faith in the ransom.

Answer 2: Salvation also means that Jehovah can forgive our sins and accept our worship. We should never consider this gift to be something ordinary.

Answer 3: In the future, salvation will be complete: sin, death, and all of God’s enemies will disappear. We have good reasons to thank Jehovah for this gift.

What privilege do we have thanks to the ransom?

Answer 1: Thanks to the ransom, we have the privilege of rendering Jehovah sacred service fearlessly. We can worship him with the assurance that he loves us and forgives us.

Answer 2: This privilege includes every activity directly related to our worship, such as praying, studying, attending meetings, and preaching.

Answer 3: We show that we value this privilege by serving Jehovah with loyalty and righteousness each day. We do not do so out of obligation, but with deep gratitude for the ransom.

What responsibility has been entrusted to us?

Luke 1:68-79 — “Let Jehovah be praised, the God of Israel, because he has turned his attention to his people and has brought them deliverance. And he has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of David his servant, just as he has spoken through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, of a salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all those hating us; to show mercy in connection with our forefathers and to call to mind his holy covenant, the oath that he swore to Abraham our forefather, to grant us, after we have been rescued from the hands of enemies, the privilege of fearlessly rendering sacred service to him with loyalty and righteousness before him all our days. But as for you, young child, you will be called a prophet of the Most High, for you will go ahead of Jehovah to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people by forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender compassion of our God. With this compassion a daybreak will visit us from on high, to give light to those sitting in darkness and death’s shadow and to guide our feet in the way of peace.”

Answer 1: We have been entrusted with preaching the message of salvation and helping people learn the way of peace. This work follows the example of John and Jesus.

Answer 2: We have the responsibility to announce the good news of the Kingdom before the end comes. We do so because we want others also to have the opportunity to take their stand for Jehovah.

Answer 3: Preaching is one way to show that we value the ransom and our sacred service. Let us make use of opportunities to share the comforting message with people.
