Theme: When Gog Attacks, Jehovah Will Not Stand Idly By

Thinking about the future can awaken very different feelings. Jehovah’s promises fill us with hope, but we may feel anxious when imagining the trials we still have to face. Jehovah understands those feelings. So, when announcing the attack against his people, he not only tells us what the enemies will do. He also assures us how he will respond. That is our reason for confidence: When Gog attacks, Jehovah will not stand idly by.

To understand that assurance, let us first consider who will attack and under what circumstances. Ezekiel’s prophecy speaks of Gog of the land of Magog. This name represents a coalition of nations that will attack Jehovah’s servants during the great tribulation. Let us note how the attacker is presented and how the people who will be his target are described. Let us read Ezekiel 38:2 and 8.

Ezekiel 38:2,8 — “Son of man, set your face against Gog of the land of Magog, the head chieftain of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him. “‘“You will be given attention after many days. In the final part of the years you will invade the land whose people have been restored from the ravages of the sword, collected together out of many peoples onto the mountains of Israel, which had long been lying devastated. The inhabitants of this land were restored from the peoples, and all of them dwell in security.

The passage describes a people gathered from among many nations who live in security. However, Gog intends to invade them. When will that attack take place? After all false religions have been destroyed. At that time, Jehovah’s people will be like the only tree left standing after a powerful storm. That image helps us understand how much Jehovah’s servants will stand out in the midst of those events.

Satan will be furious and will use demonic propaganda to incite that coalition to attack us. When the nations attack God’s people, they will have reached the symbolic place called Armageddon. Knowing this in advance helps us not to interpret that attack as a sign that Jehovah has lost control. He has already announced it. But why will the nations think that they can do away with his servants? The prophecy allows us to understand their reasoning.

The attackers will confuse the absence of military defenses with the absence of protection. From their point of view, Jehovah’s people will be an easy target. They will not recognize the protection that we see with the eyes of faith. This difference between what they will think and what we will have to remember appears in the following verses. Let us read Ezekiel 38:10-12.

Ezekiel 38:10-12 — “This is what the Sovereign Lord Jehovah says: ‘In that day thoughts will come into your heart, and you will devise an evil plan. You will say: “I will invade the land of unprotected settlements. I will come against those living in security, without disturbance, all of them living in settlements unprotected by walls, bars, or gates.” It will be to take much spoil and plunder, to attack the devastated places that are now inhabited and a people regathered from the nations, who are accumulating wealth and property, those who are living in the center of the earth.

Gog plots an evil plan against people who live in security. The description of settlements without walls, bars, or gates highlights how defenseless we will appear. We have no weapons or training for war. Therefore, the nations will believe that no one is capable of preventing them from carrying out their plan. But their conclusion will be wrong: They will be taking into account only what they can see. They will have no faith in Jehovah and will not recognize his ability to protect us.

Let us be realistic: That situation will put our trust to the test. We may come to think that the attack will end our life. So this is not about imagining ourselves free from every feeling of fear. It is about being convinced that Jehovah can deliver us and that he will do so. With the eyes of faith we will see what the attackers will not be able to see: an army of angels around God’s people, ready to defend them.

This invites us to ask ourselves what we base our sense of security on. If it depended solely on the absence of threats, it would disappear when danger arose. By contrast, trust in Jehovah can sustain us even when we see no way out. Our security will not depend on appearing strong to the nations, but on who is on our side. And Jehovah leaves no doubt about his response to the attack.

Up to this point we have seen what Gog will try to do and how he will view Jehovah’s servants. Now let us focus on the reaction of our God. His words convey determination, not indifference or hesitation. Let us read Ezekiel 38:18, 22, and 23.

Ezekiel 38:18,22-23 — “‘On that day, the day when Gog invades the land of Israel,’ declares the Sovereign Lord Jehovah, ‘my great rage will flare up. I will bring my judgment against him with pestilence and bloodshed; and I will rain down a torrential downpour and hailstones and fire and sulfur on him and on his troops and on the many peoples with him. And I will certainly magnify myself and sanctify myself and make myself known before the eyes of many nations; and they will have to know that I am Jehovah.’

The attack against his people will provoke Jehovah’s great rage. He will not be a distant spectator of the suffering of his servants. He will execute his judgment against Gog and those accompanying him. The description of the means he will use makes it clear that the attackers will not be able to stand against his power. Although the nations may consider themselves superior, their strength will not protect them when Jehovah intervenes in favor of his people.

How will Jehovah act? He will send his Son to defend his people and defeat their enemies. Jesus will be accompanied by the armies of heaven: the faithful angels and the 144,000. The result will be the complete destruction of the people and organizations that oppose Jehovah. Moreover, as we have just read, Jehovah will make himself known to the nations and sanctify his name.

All of this leads us to a very personal question: How can I prepare for Gog’s attack? Preparation does not consist in trying to imagine every detail of what will happen, but in strengthening our faith. If we feel afraid when thinking about the future, we do not have to become discouraged. We can use our present trials to discover in what areas we need to trust Jehovah more. The way we deal with today’s problems can prepare us for those that will come.

For example, when a difficulty makes us feel defenseless, we can ask ourselves: Am I measuring the situation only by what I see? Am I allowing fear to weigh more than Jehovah’s promises? Returning to these passages will help us remember who protects us. After overcoming a trial, we can also reflect on how our trust has been strengthened. Each trial we overcome can make our faith stronger and help us endure whatever may come in the future.

Gog will attack, and in the eyes of the nations we will appear defenseless. But appearances will not change the reality: Jehovah will have the power and determination to defend his people. Let us use our present trials to strengthen our faith. Then we will be able to look to the future, not trusting in our own strength, but in this certainty: When Gog attacks, Jehovah will not stand idly by.
