“Why We Are Happy Even Though People Hate Us”

1. What surprising words did Jesus say?

Answer 1:
Jesus said that his disciples would be happy when people hated them. That may seem surprising, because no one likes to feel rejected. But Jesus was not saying that the hatred itself makes us happy; rather, that we can be happy because such hatred shows that we are on Jehovah’s side.

Answer 2:
These words of Jesus help us to see opposition from a different perspective. When someone hates us for serving Jehovah, it does not mean that we are doing something wrong. Instead, it confirms that we are walking the same path that Jesus and the faithful Christians of the past walked.

Answer 3:
Jesus was realistic: he knew that his followers would be hated. But he also gave us reasons not to lose our joy. If we understand why we are hated and remember that Jehovah approves of our faithfulness, we can keep our peace and joy even in difficult circumstances.

2, 3. a) What is one reason why we true Christians are persecuted? b) What effect does knowing this have on the way we view opposers?

Answer 1:
One reason we are persecuted is that we worship Jehovah. Jesus explained that some would act against his disciples because they do not really know either Jehovah or Jesus. Knowing this helps us not to take the opposition personally but to view it with spiritual balance.

Answer 2:
Behind the hatred against Jehovah’s people is Satan. He blinds people’s minds and pushes them to oppose the truth. So even when someone treats us badly, we remember that our real enemy is not that person but Satan and his influence.

Answer 3:
Knowing that many people are deceived by Satan helps us not to hate them. Instead of responding with resentment, we try to view them as people who need to come to know Jehovah. This allows us to maintain a peaceable, respectful, and compassionate attitude.

4. What do we learn from the examples of Jesus and Stephen?

Answer 1:
Jesus and Stephen teach us that we should not hate those who persecute us. Jesus asked for forgiveness for those who took part in his death, and Stephen did something similar while he was being stoned. Their examples teach us to leave the matter in Jehovah’s hands.

Answer 2:
I am impressed that Jesus did not focus on the pain or the injustice he was suffering but on the ignorance of those who were mistreating him. That teaches me that when someone opposes us, we should try to keep a merciful and not a vengeful attitude.

Answer 3:
These examples show that prayer can help us to control our feelings. If we pray for those who oppose us, Jehovah can help us not to hold a grudge. Besides, some people who oppose us today could change in time, as happened in the first century.

5. What do you learn from César’s experience?

Answer 1:
César’s experience teaches me that good conduct can soften the heart of an opposer. His mother never stopped putting the Kingdom first, but she was also respectful and dependable within the family. In time, that had a very positive effect.

Answer 2:
I learn that we should not give up on a person just because he opposes us at first. César’s father was strongly against the truth, but in time he changed. This encourages us to keep praying, to be patient, and to trust that Jehovah can touch hearts.

Answer 3:
This experience shows that respect and faithfulness go hand in hand. César’s family obeyed and respected the father as long as they were not asked to disobey Jehovah. That balance made it possible for the father to view the truth more favorably.

6. According to Mark 13:13, what is another reason why people hate us?

Answer 1:
Another reason is that we support Jesus. Mark 13:13 says that his disciples would be hated on account of his name. That means we accept his authority as King of God’s Kingdom, and that stand sets us apart from those who put their trust in human governments.

Answer 2:
People hate us because we recognize that Jesus is the ruler chosen by Jehovah. Many people place their hope in human leaders, but we trust in God’s Kingdom. That loyalty to Christ can bring rejection, but it also gives us security and hope.

Answer 3:
Jesus’ “name” includes his authority and his reputation. When we defend his role as King, we show that we do not follow the ideas of the world. Even if that causes some to reject us, for us it is an honor to be on Christ’s side.

7, 8. Why are some of Jehovah’s servants mocked?

Answer 1:
Some of Jehovah’s servants are mocked because they are no part of the world. They do not adopt its values, its way of speaking, or its conduct. At school or at work, that can make others criticize them, but Jehovah greatly values their remaining faithful.

Answer 2:
We may be ridiculed because we follow high moral standards. To many people, living in line with the Bible seems strange or old-fashioned. But we know that Jehovah’s standards do not take away our freedom; on the contrary, they protect us and help us to be truly happy.

Answer 3:
The example of Ignacio shows that faithful conduct can end up giving a fine witness. Even though his teacher made fun of him, in time the teacher wanted to know why Ignacio lived that way. That teaches us that enduring with respect can produce good results.

9, 10. a) For what other reason are we different from Satan’s world? b) What do we learn from the example of the apostle Paul?

Answer 1:
We are different from the world because we are neutral in political matters and in wars. We obey the laws of the country, but our primary loyalty is to Jehovah and to his Kingdom. That stand can bring difficulties, but it shows that we trust fully in God’s government.

Answer 2:
From the apostle Paul we learn that even difficult circumstances can become opportunities to preach. Although he was imprisoned, he kept talking about the good news. That teaches us that opposition cannot stop Jehovah’s work or quench our desire to help others.

Answer 3:
Paul did not view his situation merely as a trial but as an opportunity. In a similar way, many brothers imprisoned for their neutrality have preached to judges, officials, and guards. This reminds us that Jehovah can use our faithfulness to reach sincere people.

11. Why is our faith strengthened when we suffer persecution? Give an example.

Answer 1:
Our faith is strengthened because we see the fulfillment of what the Bible foretold. Jehovah and Jesus warned that those who love God would suffer hatred and opposition. So when it happens, we are not surprised; rather, it confirms to us that God’s Word always tells the truth.

Answer 2:
Persecution can strengthen our conviction that we are in the true religion. One sister said that she expected to suffer opposition because the Bible had foretold it. Although her husband treated her very badly, she did not give up; on the contrary, her faith grew stronger.

Answer 3:
When we suffer opposition, we prove that our faith does not depend on easy circumstances. If we remain loyal to Jehovah despite the pressure, our confidence in him becomes deeper. Trials may hurt, but they can also make our relationship with Jehovah firmer.

12. What helped a brother to endure persecution?

Answer 1:
That brother was helped a great deal by constant prayer. He prayed at the start of the day, during difficulties, and when he felt indignant over injustices. This teaches us that we should not wait until we are at our limit to speak to Jehovah; we can lean on him at all times.

Answer 2:
He was also helped by meditating on examples of faithful servants, both from Bible times and from our day. That reminded him that he was not alone and that others had endured with Jehovah’s help. Thinking about fine examples can give us strength when we are under pressure.

Answer 3:
This example teaches me that peace does not depend on problems disappearing. Although the brother was still in prison, prayer and meditation helped him to feel the peace that Jesus promised. Jehovah can give us inner calm even when the outward situation is very difficult.

13. What will help us to conquer hatred?

Answer 1:
What will help us to conquer hatred is love. Jesus deeply loved Jehovah and also loved his disciples to the end. If we cultivate that same love for Jehovah and for our brothers, the hatred of others will not manage to embitter us or turn us away from the truth.

Answer 2:
Hatred seeks to stir up fear, resentment, or discouragement. But love moves us to keep being faithful, to forgive, and to help others. That is why the stronger our love for Jehovah is, the less power hatred will have over our heart.

Answer 3:
To conquer hatred we need to strengthen our relationship with Jehovah. If we truly love him, we will want to please him even if others criticize us. That love also helps us to view our brothers with affection and to stay united, which is exactly the opposite of what Satan wants.

14. What helped Paul to be loyal as he faced death?

Answer 1:
Paul was helped by his deep love for Jehovah. He knew that he could lose his life, but he did not let fear control him. His love gave him courage, power, and good judgment to remain faithful to the end.

Answer 2:
Paul was not courageous by mere strength of character. His courage came from love and from Jehovah’s spirit. That encourages us, because we too can be loyal if we let Jehovah strengthen our heart by means of his spirit.

Answer 3:
Paul’s example shows that love is stronger than fear. When a person loves Jehovah deeply, he is willing to endure very harsh trials. That is why cultivating love for God now prepares us to remain faithful when greater trials come.

15. How are our brothers showing that they feel deep love for one another?

Answer 1:
Our brothers show love by supporting those who suffer persecution. In some places, they go to the courts to encourage those who have been arrested for their faith. That support does not remove the trial, but it greatly strengthens those who are going through hard times.

Answer 2:
The love among brothers is seen in courageous and practical actions. Some risk their comfort, their safety, or their freedom in order to encourage others. That shows that our brotherhood is not just a nice idea but a real and united spiritual family.

Answer 3:
I am moved when I think of the sister who was overcome with emotion at seeing her brothers in the courtroom. At such a hard moment, the affection of the congregation gave her strength. That shows that hatred can isolate, but Christian love unites and strengthens.

16. Why did the apostle Peter say that those who suffer opposition for serving God can be happy?

Answer 1:
Peter said that we can be happy because suffering for serving God shows that we have his approval. Opposition does not mean that Jehovah has abandoned us. On the contrary, when we endure faithfully, we show that his spirit rests upon us.

Answer 2:
Peter knew from experience what it was to suffer for preaching. He and other apostles were arrested and beaten, but they came away happy because Jehovah counted them worthy to suffer for the name of Jesus. That teaches us to view trials with spiritual eyes.

Answer 3:
We can be happy because Jehovah sees our faithfulness. Others may humiliate us or treat us unjustly, but to Jehovah our loyalty has great value. His approval weighs far more than the rejection of any person.

17. What did Jesus tell his disciples the night before his death?

Answer 1:
Jesus reminded them that those who love him are also loved by his Father. That comforts us greatly, because when we suffer hatred for serving Jehovah, we are not alone. We have the love of Jehovah and of Jesus, and that gives us strength to keep being faithful.

Answer 2:
The night before he died, Jesus spoke about his Father’s love. That is very meaningful, because his disciples were about to face very hard trials. Knowing that Jehovah loved them would help them to endure, and it helps us in the same way.

Answer 3:
These words of Jesus make us look to the future with hope. Today some hate us for serving Jehovah, but the day will come when love will rule and no one will persecute God’s servants. In the meantime, Jehovah’s love sustains us.

What would you answer?

Why do people hate the followers of Jesus?

Answer 1:
People hate the followers of Jesus because we worship Jehovah, support Christ’s authority, and are no part of the world. Our way of life, our neutrality, and our Bible-based standards set us apart from those under Satan’s influence.

Answer 2:
The hatred is not because we harm others but because we are loyal to Jehovah and to Jesus. Satan influences people to reject the truth and to oppose those who love God. Knowing this helps us not to hate the opposers.

Answer 3:
We are hated because we uphold values that clash with Satan’s world. We do not follow its moral, political, or religious ideas. Even so, we try to treat everyone with respect, because we know that some people can change when they see our good conduct.

In what sense is our love stronger than hatred?

Answer 1:
Our love is stronger than hatred because it helps us to stay faithful and united. Hatred tries to divide us or frighten us, but love for Jehovah and for our brothers gives us courage to endure and to keep doing what is right.

Answer 2:
Love conquers hatred because we do not respond with resentment. We pray for those who persecute us, we support our brothers, and we keep on preaching. That attitude shows that Christian love has more power than pressure, mockery, or persecution.

Answer 3:
Hatred can cause suffering, but it cannot destroy the love that Jehovah has placed among his servants. When the brothers encourage one another, help one another, and stay united, they show that Christian love is a far more powerful force.

Why can we be happy when people hate us?

Answer 1:
We can be happy because the hatred confirms that the words of Jesus and the Bible prophecies are being fulfilled. We do not rejoice over suffering, but we do rejoice in knowing that we are on the right side and that Jehovah approves of our faithfulness.

Answer 2:
We are happy because Jehovah sustains us with his spirit. Although opposition is painful, he gives us peace, courage, and hope. Besides, each trial we endure can strengthen our faith and draw us closer to him.

Answer 3:
We can be happy because the hatred of this world is temporary, but Jehovah’s love is permanent. We know that the day will come when no one will hate God’s servants. In the meantime, we remain faithful, confident that Jehovah is pleased with us.
