Book Study lesson chapter 68: Elizabeth has a baby

Zacharias and Elizabeth had been waiting for me for many years to something that seemed to never come. That is why this story moves so much, because it recalls that Jehovah does not forget his faithful servants, although sometimes the answer will be more than one imagined.

The appearance of the angel Gabriel in the temple makes you see the solemnness of the moment. It was not any news: Jehovah was setting up a very important part of his purpose, and Zechariah was going to hear it first hand.

Zacharias was scared, as normal, but the most interesting thing is that it took him to believe what he heard. That makes it very human. Sometimes one serves Jehovah, but when an extraordinary answer comes, it is difficult for him to assimilate that it can really happen.

The prophecy of Zechariah is precious because it focuses not only on John, but on the Messiah. John would have a very important job, but always in relation to someone older than him. That helps to remember that Jehovah’s assignments always fit within a much larger purpose.

Book Study lesson chapter 69: Angel Gabriel visits Mary

Mary’s story impresses with her simplicity. She was a young woman from Nazareth, a rare population, but Jehovah saw her with great courage. That remembers that Jehovah is not seeking human greatness, but a clean and available attitude.

When Gabriel tells her that Jehovah has greatly favored her, Mary does not respond with pride or air of importance. Rather, he’s left thinking about what those words meant. That modesty says a lot about his character.

The proclamation about Jesus is extraordinary: it was not only a son, but the future King whose Kingdom would last forever. From the beginning it became clear that the birth of Jesus was directly linked to the fulfillment of Jehovah’s purpose.

Mary’s question is not born of rebellious unbelief, but from the desire to understand. And the angel’s answer leaves one of the great truths of the Bible: for Jehovah nothing is impossible. That phrase, on its own, already strengthens a lot.

Joseph proves to be a just and obedient man. When he gets the explanation, he doesn’t resist or get caught up in his doubts. He acts and marries Maria. Thus, both Mary and Joseph show that obedience to Jehovah often demands confidence before seeing everything resolved.
